Aghada GAA Club Newsletter: 06/06/2026

A Chairde,

It has been an incredibly busy and successful few weeks across all codes and age groups in our club. From crucial league points secured on home soil to silverware brought back from across the county bounds, the pride of the parish is shining through and hopefully this is only the start of a long and successful season for all codes!

Read all about the latest happenings from across the club below.

Recent Results:
Our adult teams have put in some massive performances over the last few weeks, yielding crucial points and laying down serious markers for the remainder of the league.
  • Premier Intermediate Football League: A couple of weeks back, our Intermediate footballers faced a tough, physical challenge against an in form Buttevant side. In a game that required immense work rate and patience, the lads showed brilliant composure in the closing stages to grind out a fantastic and well-deserved victory after trailing by 7 points at half time. They still need a few results to go their way to secure their place in this league division next year but are certainly on the right track. They face Gabriel Rangers at 5:30pm this evening in Ballydehob.
  • Intermediate Hurling League: Sunday was a great day for our hurlers, as they secured a crucial win against Ballinascarthy, scoring an impressive 3-28 enroute to victory. This victory was crucial as it puts the lads in a brilliant position for league promotion. The equation now is simple: two more wins from our final two games will guarantee promotion. Promotion from Division 6 of the Red FM league would be brilliant progress for this group so hopefully our lads can get over the line over the next few weeks. Our final two games are against Argideen Rangers and Killavullen so a big support will be needed for both these matches.
  • Senior Ladies Footballers: Our Senior Ladies Footballers recently defeated Clonakilty in the league quarter final in Rostellan after topping their round robin group with three wins from three. Our ladies now face Kinsale on June 21st in the league semi final as they aim to reach the final for a second year in a row. Keep up the good work ladies.
  • Premier Junior Camogie League: Our Premier Junior Camogie team have secured their status in their league for next year. The team played four games and a great win against Castlelyons in Rostellan was vital in ensuring we remain in this league for 2027. Well done to all involved.
  • Junior Mens teams: Our Junior A Footballers are competing very well in their league. The lads will finish off their league campaign on Monday night with their league status fully secured before a ball is ever thrown in which is a great achievement for this group of players. Our Junior B Hurlers are flying at the moment and are currently second in the league standings. They will conclude their round robin fixtures against Carrigtwohill next week. A win here will secure a knockout place in the league. Our Junior C Footballers are heading for a league final after winning all 7 of their league fixtures. The lads face a formidable test against Bride Rovers in the league final on the 3rd of July. Best of luck lads.

Cork Inter-County Teams:
It is an extraordinary time for Cork teams at present, and our club is incredibly proud to have players and mentors heavily involved across multiple county panels. Here is how some of the Rebel teams are shaping up:

A massive congratulations to the Cork Minor Footballers who captured the Munster Minor Football Championship in style against Kerry a couple of weeks ago in Páirc Uí Rinn! A brilliant victory for Cork football and something to build on for sure. These minors aren't done yet, though. Today (Saturday), at 2PM, they head to Thurles to face Meath in a massive All-Ireland Championship Quarter Final clash. The best of luck to all the players, management, and backroom staff, especially our own John O’Connor who is involved with the backroom team.

Our silverware haul didn't stop there. A huge shoutout to the Cork Minor Ladies Football team, who also recently claimed their own Minor Championship title after a phenomenal campaign! We are very proud of Ava Coughlan who was a central figure for the team in the centre back position. Well done Ava and best of luck in the All Ireland series of the competition.

We also want to send our best wishes to the Cork U20 Ladies Footballers, who are continuing to make fantastic progress in their own championship hunt. The team have defeated Dublin, and Meath while they fell to a narrow loss away to Galway. They face Mayo in their final round robin fixture and have a decent chance of qualifying for the All Ireland Final as Dublin did Cork a favour last week and defeated Galway. This now means the top spot in the group is likely to come down to score difference. Best of luck to all involved here, especially Aghada players Bríanna Smith, Amelia Cooper and Maisie McRae. Make sure to bring the shooting boots to Mayo with ye girls!

This Sunday at 2PM, all eyes in the hurling world will be on SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh as the Cork Senior Hurlers take on Limerick in the Munster Hurling Final. This is a monumental fixture. Cork are aiming for back to back Munster titles. It promises to be an absorbing contest and we wish all involved the very best of luck. Safe travels to all attending. Forget the suncream, get the water proof legging out and brace yourself for rain, rain and more rain!

Following their fantastic, gutsy win over Meath a couple of weeks ago in Páirc Uí Rinn, the Cork Senior Footballers face a daunting physical and tactical test next week. They face a long road trip north to face Jim McGuinness’s formidable Donegal team in Ballybofey. Because this is the winners' round of the All-Ireland series, Cork are guaranteed another game regardless of the result. However, a win here would be massive and send Cork straight to the All Ireland Quarter Final.

The Cork Senior Ladies Footballers run out this Saturday at 3:15PM in Páirc Uí Rinn for their opening All Ireland Championship clash. They are eager to build on their fantastic Division 1 National League success. While the Munster Championship didn't entirely go to plan, they are resetting for the All-Ireland group stages. First up is Ulster champions Armagh at home, followed quickly by an away trip to Munster runners up Waterford. A roaring home crowd on Saturday is vital to kickstart the All-Ireland hunt. Best of luck to Abigail Ring, Rachel Leahy and the Cork team. Hard luck to the Cork Senior B team who lost out a few weeks ago to Clare in the Munster Final. After a great campaign it was a pity for the rebels to lose out at the final hurdle. Well done to our own Mary Leahy who was a key player for the team.

The Cork Camogie team also faces a steep mountain to climb this Saturday at 2PM, making the long trip to Athenry to take on All Ireland Champions Galway in their opening All Ireland Championship group game. Best of luck to all involved here.

Senior Ladies Strike Gold at the Killarney Sevens:
Our Senior Ladies Football team traveled to Kerry last weekend for the prestigious annual Killarney Sevens Tournament hosted by Spa GAA, putting on an absolute masterclass of stamina, skill, and team spirit across two grueling days of football.

On Saturday, the girls hit the ground running. They played three group games and put on a great display of 7s football, winning all three comfortably. Out of 24 teams competing from across Ireland and beyond, our ladies topped the overall seedings for a second year in a row which was a feat in itself.

On Sunday, the stakes were raised as it became knockout football for all concerned. A clinical and composed victory over Chicago in the last 16 game got the morning off to a flyer.
Our ladies then faced Milltown in an incredibly physical, end-to-end battle in the tournament quarter final. The girls dug deep, used their fitness, and ground out a brilliant victory.

Next up was tournament hosts, Spa GAA. Unfortunately, Kaitlin Smith suffered an injury early on in this game but our girls stayed strong, kept their professional edge, moving the ball beautifully in the game and eventually booked their spot in the competition final. Best wishes to Kaitlin on her recovery from injury!

The cup final saw our girls face off against familiar Cork rivals Mourneabbey. A pre match parade which was followed by the national anthem set the tone for what was to follow. It was an incredibly tense, nerve-wracking affair. With the clock ticking deep into the red, our girls held a hard earned 5 point lead. Mourneabbey won a late free and managed to drop it into the net for a goal but the referee blew the final whistle on the kickout! Our girls emerged victorious by 2 points to great scenes of celebration. Along with the magnificent cup, the ladies secured a massive €3,000 prize fund for the club! A special, massive congratulations to our own Sally McAllister, who was deservedly named the overall Player of the Tournament for her sensational displays over the weekend. What a weekend, one that will be remembered for a very long time. Well done ladies!

Primary School Blitzes:
Last month saw Páirc Liam Uí Riain packed with color and excitement as the underage Hurling and Football School Blitzes returned for the younger classes (Junior Infants to 1st Class which included over 270 children) across our local primary schools: Scartleigh NS, Aghada NS, and Whitegate NS.

The events were hosted and organised by Pat O'Connell and Paula Dunne alongside our brilliant schools coaching team. It was a flawless 2 days of sport, and we owe a massive debt of gratitude to our Transition Year helpers who volunteered to referee, coach, and manage the logistics on the day.
Every child left with a smile on their face, and there is absolutely no doubt that Pat, Paula and their team discovered a few future Aghada stars in the making!

Exam Students:
Finally, the club wants to take a moment to send our warmest thoughts, support, and the very best of luck to all of our junior and adult players currently sitting their Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate exams.
The first few days of any exam cycle are always the toughest to navigate, but those are officially behind you now. We hope all of our studying players take some time to completely unplug, rest up over the weekend, and hopefully (fingers crossed) get to enjoy a big Cork Munster Final victory on Sunday afternoon.

Keep the heads down for the second week of exams next week, control the controllables, and do your best. We cannot wait to welcome you back to the playing fields for the business end of the season in a couple of weeks when the pens are finally down and forgotten about!

Aghada GAA Club is now on Benevity:
We are now officially registered on Benevity!  If your company offers workplace giving, corporate donation matching, or volunteer tracking, you can now find and support us directly through your employee portal. Under Aghada GAA Club. All donations gratefully appreciated.

That's it for this newsletter. A big weekend for Cork teams awaits. Safe Journey to our Premier Intermediate Footballers this evening when they face Gabriel Rangers at 5:30pm in Ballydehob.

Enjoy the weekend.

Slán,
Vince
