The evenings are closing in and floodlights are starting to be reignited around the county as club championships continue at pace. As children head back to school over the next few days, routine will set in, but remember the games will continue! In fact, this weekend, we have four adult championship fixtures so there’s plenty of action to look forward to. Please have a read through our adult team updates below along with news about the Relay For Life Walk that takes place this weekend in Midleton CBS.
Intermediate A Hurling Update
Our Intermediate hurlers had a fantastic victory last Friday night in the CoOp Superstores Intermediate A Hurling Championship. A great performance across the pitch secured a well-deserved win which sets us up nicely heading into our final round of fixtures – well done to all players and management. The full match report is available here: https://www.aghadagaa.com/articles/160512
While we are on Intermediate Hurling, please see the below update from club secretary John Murphy on our Championship game against Kildorrery a few weeks ago:
We have an update for members on the above game as you might have been reading about the ongoing saga in the media. Aghada won the game on the day by two points, but an error by officials in recording the scores saw them call the game a draw at full time. Over the past number of weeks, a significant amount of time, energy, and consideration has gone into exploring all available avenues and engaging with the appropriate authorities. While this process has not been ideal, the club felt it had a responsibility to fully investigate the matter in order to represent the interests of our club, our players and management team.
Following the game we lodged an objection concerning the result of the game with the County Board. At a subsequent investigation, the board accepted our evidence that we won the game, but on the basis that Kildorrery were also affected by the score being wrongly recorded, they ordered a replay to take place, and null and voided the original result/fixture. As this was the least preferable outcome for the club, we appealed this decision to the Munster Council, again looking to be awarded the 2 championship points on offer on the basis we had proven beyond doubt that we had in fact won the game. The Munster Council, while indicating they were not going to award us the result, did find that correct due process had not been followed in our case and referred it back to the County Board to appoint a new CCC (panel) to adjudicate on our objection. After Munster Council ruling, the original game and result was reinstated. Faced with little prospect of being awarded the game, and with only one way of guaranteeing we secured the clubs 2nd preference (ie keep original result rather than play a replay), the club made the difficult decision to withdraw the objection. The result of that meant that the game is now officially a draw once more. This decision was reached in what we firmly believe is the best overall interest of the club and all our adult teams currently contesting their round robin championship games, not least the intermediate hurling team.
The outcome is not what we had hoped for, but it does bring clarity and finality. The alternative would have meant weeks of uncertainty, with appeals and delays leaving us without a clear resolution and little prospect of achieving our original goal. Now, at least, we can move forward with certainty. Our Intermediate hurling group remains very much in the balance, but we at least go into the final game in pole position at the top of the table.
While the circumstances are far from ideal, we take pride in how our club has conducted itself throughout. We wish to acknowledge and thank everyone involved and affected by this process for their patience, hard work, and dedication throughout. We thank all members, players, mentors and supporters for their understanding and support. Best of luck to all in their upcoming championship encounters………including the scorekeepers!!!!
So there you have a comprehensive update from John Murphy on this saga! Certainly not an easy situation to deal with and as John said above, thanks to everyone who helped with the appeals process. Now we know for definite, we have three points secured on the board and the aim will be to make it five points when we face Ballygiblin in the last group game in a few weeks time!
Junior B Hurling Update
On Sunday, our Junior B hurlers showed great determination in their clash with Castlelyons. After a hard-fought comeback, James Hurley leveled the game with a late score to secure a draw. A superb effort from the lads which means they head into their final group game against St.Catherines on three points and know a win here will secure passage to the knockout stages of the competition. Well done to all involved!
Premier Junior Camogie Update
On Wednesday night, our camogie team began their Premier Junior Championship campaign with an away trip to Mallow. Playing on the main pitch in Mallow, the girls produced a strong first-half performance. A goal from Abigail Ring, along with fine points from Ali Smith (3), Isabel Barry and Clare Walsh, had Aghada leading 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time.
Unfortunately, not all the floodlights could be switched on for the second half, and after a move to Mallow’s second pitch, the same issue arose. As a result, the game was abandoned at half-time. It now looks likely the match will be replayed in Aghada – updates to follow on this!
