Fri 9th May Junior football league 3 Aghada 2-13 Dungourney 0-12

Aghada’s JB footballers had a good win last Friday when they travelled to Dungourney to play the home side in Round 7 of the Division 3 league. A good game of football between two evenly matched sides was ultimately decided by a goal in each half from Aghada, plus a couple of vital saves from Christopher Cashman in goals. In the first half Mickey Lewis set up Eoin O’Donovan who fired home a great goal after 20 minutes and then in the second half, again with 20 minutes played, Lewis earned a penalty which he converted himself to ensure the points went to Aghada. Others to play well were – the man back from Oz, Stephen Cashman, Alan Walsh and Eugene Buckley when introduced. Aghada team and scorers –

Mon 5th May Premier Intermedate hurling Championship

Aghada 1-11 Watergrasshill 2-9

Aghada came out of the blocks the better as Michael Glavin opened the scoring from the throw in, the Hill replied straight away from a free. The evergreen Dwane scored next. Aghada fielding 4 minors were all over the hill at this stage.after a great run by Shane Wall the ball dropped into the goalies hand from his clearance Eoin Healy got his first adult championship score. Trigger added another and Aghada were coasting. The Hill replied on the 13th m but off went Aghada again to score six points without reply. Trigger, Melvin, Glavin, Johno and Vincent were well on top. The hill scored their third point as the short whistle sounded to leave Aghada ahead 0-9 to 0-3.
With alarm bells ringing the hill brought out the big guns while Noel O’Riordan came on half way through the first half it was the introduction of John Halbert that caused a buss around the ground. Within 7 minutes of the restart the hill had 1-2 and would score two more minors before Trigger stopped the flow on the 44th m to level the game again seven minutes later he put Aghada ahead but twas short lived as the hill levelled within a minute. It was now all the hill and they were guilty of some glaring misses then with 3 minutes left on the clock they goaled and one would have thought that was that but no Trigger showing first class skill surrounded by red shirts got his pass away to Vincent and he picked his spot sides level again. Both sides had changes to win the game and on the stoke of full time the Hill pointed to get out of jail. Aghada had some great chances in the opening quarter but the last pass when astray. Still with four minors starting not a bad days work but we have a repeat of last years second round v Blarney

Fri 2nd May U12 A football, Championship final

Aghada 4-7 Midleton 2-7

Aghada win 1st ever A Juvenile title

And what a win

On a cold and windy night in Carrigtwohill Aghada elected to play with the wind and within a minute of the start Jordan Ryan goaled after a great pass from full forward Jake O’Donoghue. With the wind behind them Aghada came in droves but were guilty of poor shooting then when centre back Aaron Stafford won the ball on his forty surged forward and landed a mighty point Aghada were on the way. A minute later Ryan goaled from a free after great work from centre forward John Looney and from the kick out Stafford landed another long range point. Then on the tenth minute from a free Midleton goaled. Kevin O’Hanlon responded and pointed to push Aghada further ahead. By now Midleton started to put the pressure on and added two minors before Aghada scored again up stepped Stafford with a point followed by a Brian Rice one to leave the half time score 2-6 to 1-2
The talk at half time was could Aghada hold out against the wind as Midleton showed they could play football. Indeed the town started the better and had three points on the board before Aghada were to score again but the critical thing here was that it took them 16 minutes as Aghada fought tooth and nail to keep them out Conor Phelan and Shane Crowley were by now outstanding in the half backline. Ryan came back to help out the defence and had a major part to play in this win. Then in a one two between Stafford and our superb Captain Stephen Murphy or it could have been his twin Andrew the smallest man on the field Kevin O’Hanlon got a touch and after going 19 minutes with out a score Aghada goaled. Three minutes later Jake O’Donoghue pointed and Aghada were on their way or so we thought. Midleton had other idea’s one more attack and they won a penalty which goalie Michael Leahy saved but Midleton got a boot to the rebound Goal. Now the pressure was on Midleton were parked on our full forward line but time after time fullback Sean Dorney came out with the ball as did Mark Healy to relive pressure. Aghada came again and after some great work by Hanna Looney. Hanlon goaled again still Midleton came and had the last score but too little to late. And history for Aghada as the Rúnaí of Bórd Na nÓg Pádraig Foley say to the lads as he presented the cup many a great Aghada footballer went before ye but ye have something that they don't have an A championship medal

Aghada (2) 4-10 Killeagh/Ita’s 1-2

Aghada’s second team travelled to Killeagh on Wednesday last the 23rd of April to play the home side in the first round of this year’s D championship. Playing against the wind, the first half was a close affair with Killeagh going into the lead through an early goal. Aghada were grateful to ‘keeper Joe Hennigan aswell as Cian Savage and especially Aaron Berry for some strong defending in this period. A goal from corner forward Mark Wall, got Aghada back in the game and another from Jack Farmer just before the break gave the Aghada lads a half time lead 2-2 V 1-2. On resumption, Aghada really took over, and the introduction of Kyle McCarthy at centre forward added some extra fire power upfront. A super goal from Kyle, and another from Farmer put Aghada on the road to a comfortable victory. Aghada U12 football

Aghada’s U12 footballers have been very busy with matches this last month. This year we are fielding 2 teams , 1 at A grade and the other at D grade. Both have been going well in their leagues as championship time now approaches.

The A team started their league campaign on the 31st of March, when they entertained Killeagh/Ita’s in Rostellan. On a damp night, a strong wind ensured that this was to be a game of 2 halves. Killeagh/Ita’s raced into a commanding lead in the 1st period. Try as they might, Aghada, despite having plenty of opportunities could not reduce this lead to anything less than 2 points in the second half and Killeagh/Ita’s were the winners.

Next up was Carrigtwohill. This was a strange game, with Carrigtwohill dominating for long periods, but Aghada being far more clinical with their chances up front. At half time Aghada led by 4 goals, but this was no way a fair reflection of the game. Carrig took over in the second period, but some stout defending from Michael Leahy, Peter Cashman and Shane Dorney just about kept Aghada in the lead and they held on for a fortunate 2 point victory. Final score Aghada 6-4 V Carrigtwohill 4-8.

Next up for the A’s was Glanmire at home, and here a fine team performance gave Aghada a very comfortable win on a 4-16 v 0-3 scoreline.

Then it was down to Youghal for Round 4. A bit like the Carrig game , Aghada were more than flattered by the scoreline, which looks far more comfortable than it really was. Final score – Aghada 2-11 V Youghal 1-1. The Aghada goals coming from Aaron Stafford and John Looney.

That leaves Aghada with 2 games to play and in a strong position to clinch a league final spot.

The D’s have gone even one better and have already clinched their place in the league final. A big win against Midleton in the opening round was followed by a heavy defeat away to Lisgoold on a scoreline that read Aghada 0-2 V Lisgoold 3-8. It didn’t seem as bad at half time with the sides level at 2 points a piece, but the home side totally took over after the break to run out convincing winners.

Next up was Killeagh/Ita’s at home and on a bitterly cold night, Aghada edged out a narrow win on a 1-12 V 1-3 scoreline. Aghada were grateful to some stout defending from Tadgh Gilroy, Jordan Tynan and Kalen O’Donoghue on the night.

Next was the long trip up to Glenville, where inspired by a super performance from Aaron Butler at midfield, Aghada had a big win. Daniel Creedon, Mark Wall, Jack McGauran ,Stephen Daly, James Gilroy, Luke Nolan, and Declan Foley were others who impressed. Final Score Aghada 9-9 V Glenville 2-2.

Aghada’s last game turned out to be a nail biting affair when they entertained Glanmire in Rostellan. In a contest that was close throughout, Aghada did manage to put some daylight between the sides mid way through the second half when they had a 3 point lead. Back came Glanmire however and in the end it was Aghada that were clinging on to earn a draw and a share of the points. Aghada ‘keeper Joe Hennigan was easily Aghada’s best player and kept them in the game with several fine saves. Cian Savage, Aaron Berry, Charlie Terry, Mathew Leahy and Eddie Leahy were others to impress on the night.

That result sets up a league final between the same 2 sides but for now it is down to the really serious business as championship looms on the horizon.

This years panels are made up of – Michael Leahy, Mathew Stafford, Shane Dorney, James Cashman, Shane Crowley, Aaron Stafford, Cormac Phelan, Brian Rice, Mark Healy, Andrew Murphy, Stephen Murphy, Jordan Ryan, John Looney, Kevin O’Hanlon, Stephen O’Halloran, Jake O’Donoghue, Peter Cashman, Sean O’Leary, Hannah Looney, Luke O Connell, Tadgh Gilroy, Joe Hennigan, Kalen O Donoughue, Aaron Butler, Jack MCGauran, Jordan Tynan, Aaron Berry, Paul Daly, Daniel Creedon, Luke Nolan , Charlie Terry, Jack Farmer, Matthew Leahy, Declan Foley, Daniel Horgan , Adam Dwane,David Heffernan,Mark Wall, Conor O Callaghan, Gavin Kelly, Kyle Mc Carthy, Cian Savage, Stephen Daly, Edward Leahy, Jack Foley, James Gilroy,

Wed 23rd Minor B H L Aghada1-14 Watergrasshill 2-6

Sun 20th April Junior Football championship

Aghada 0-9 Midleton 1-8

The general consensus after the game was we left it after us as we out played Midleton for large parts of the game.
Aghada started the better a mighty point from Nigel Berry opened the scoring after 2 minutes. With John Connelly well in control at centre back Aghada went forward at will but our finishing was not what it should be. With Nigel Berry and young and Eoin Healy plucking balls out of the air Aghada had the upper hand yet could not pull away despite goal efforts from Mark Lewis and Healy we could not shake Midleton off. It was score for score as the short whistle beckoned. Aghada’s defence was water tight with Shane Wall, Connelly, Pa Connors and Alan Creedon to the fore yet the half time score was 0-3 to 0-3.
On resumption Midleton were a better team and went ahead for the first time which they were never to lose on the 32nd minute. Tony Wall added an outstanding point a minute later then we started to gift the town boy’s scores well in control we gave away silly passes which resulted in Midleton scores as they went two points clear in as many minutes. Lewis pulled one back from a dead ball but Midleton added one more a minute later. Tosser again converted a placed ball to put one between the sides with ten minutes left on the clock but then disaster as Midleton struck for a goal game over you would say but true to Aghada’s form the fight back started scoring 3 minors in as many minutes from Healy , Creedon and Tosser from a placed ball. Now only one point win the kick out and anything could happen but Midleton got the ball and put the game beyond us with the last kick of the game. While losing 2 championship game over one weekend there was a lot of plus’s Eoin Healy was one of them . team

Fri 18th April Senior Football Championship

Aghada 2-7 Nemo Rangers 3-10

Sparking Nemo start four-in-a-row quest in style

Nemo Rangers 3-10 Aghada 2-7 (Jim O’Sullivan Irish Examiner)

A FUNNY game this in the drizzle and fading light in Midleton last night in the opening round of the Cork senior football championship.

After 19 minutes of effort from both sides, All-Ireland club finalists Nemo Rangers led Aghada by 0-3 to 0-1 before getting a goal either side of half time and enjoying a 13-point advantage at the three-quarters stage.

And then we saw Aghada persistence paying off with a goal from their best forward, Trevor O’Keeffe in the 54th minute and after Nemo lost team captain Maurice McCarthy for a second yellow card offence, they finally got their forward game going with a further goal and three points in an eight-minute period.

Of course, it happened all too late for the East Cork side, whose work-rate more than matched that of the craftier Nemo but whose use of the ball going forward was often seriously deficient by comparison. In short, it was a typical display from the reigning champions, well organised and methodical, who on this display will be hard to stop in their quest to achieve four-in-a-row.

They started with just one change in personnel from the side which lost in the All-Ireland Club Final in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day — Sean O’Brien at right half-forward in place of Rickey Kenny — but with positional alterations both in defence and attack, which featured county players Derek Kavanagh and James Masters at centre-back and centre-forward respectively. And, not for the first time, Masters played a key role in attack, despite the best efforts of Paul Kilbane and Kieran O’Connor.

Masters got their opening score, from a 9th minute free and while Aghada were to be frustrated by the lack of return from a number of promising attacks, they could feel satisfied with their defensive covering, which was assisted by team captain John Paul O’Connor and others dropping back to help ease the pressure. The problem was they missed good scoring chances, resulting from the hard work Ronan Dwane, O’Connor, O’Keeffe and Cian Fleming — along with Tom O’Neill at midfield.

Nemo finished the half strongly. The 10 minutes before the break saw them finish with a flourish with the first of two goals from Alan Cronin in injury time, when he had the simple task of finishing the ball to the net after ‘keeper Evan Kennedy dropped an angled shot from David Kearney.

Turning over 1-5 to 0-1 in front, Aghada suffered another body blow when slack marking left Kearney in for a goal chance which he took expertly. Nemo’s defence was even harder to penetrate, Peter Morgan was stronger at midfield and with Masters, Dylan Mehigan, Kearney and Paul Kerrigan to the forefront up front, they maintained control.

A third goal followed, from Alan Cronin (created by Mehigan) and it served to highlight the difference between the teams — Nemo’s play being the more productive. But, to give Aghada credit, their effort never faltered and they were to be rewarded at the end — their supporters getting special satisfaction from an excellent goal initiated by Kilbane, and finished in style by O’Keeffe.

Scorers for Nemo Rangers: A. Cronin 2-2; J. Masters 0-5 (0-3 frees); D. Kearney 1-1; P. Kerrigan (free) and D. Mehigan 0-1 each.

Sun13th April Senior football league Aghada 1-14 Ilen rovers 1-15

The senior football’s had a useful workout on Sunday last but came out on the wrong side of a 1-15 V 1-14 scoreline against Ilen Rovers in the Kelleher Shield. Kieran O’Connor scored 1-2 from wing forward, in a game that saw good performances also from Cian Fleming and Trevor O’Keeffe. Next up is D Day and a date with Nemo Rangers in the 1st round of the county championship. Last years All-Ireland runners up will, as usual, start as hot favourites, but Aghada, buoyed by improvements in recent performances and good championship wins at Junior A and U21 levels, will go all guns blazing for the scalp of the Capwell club. Best of luck to all involved.

Sat 5th April East Cork U21 A football Championship final

Aghada 0-8 Carrignavar 0-5

Aghada take their 7th U21 A title

On Sat last in a well prepared but cold Lisgoold Aghada made sure of their third title this decade their 7th in all. Both teams were very even only for Aghada’s cork minor Cian Fleming who took the game by the scruff of the neck scoring five of Aghada’s eight points a fair achievement on a day when scores were as scarce as hen’s teeth. O but it could have been so different. Carrig dominated the opening exchanges with their Midfielder Martin Hickey pressing forward with ease causing the Aghada backline grief yet to no avail.
Then in a rare attract Aghada’s Kennett O’Brien found himself one and one with the keeper only to shoot into the keepers hands. From this miss Barry Casey Pointed a free to put Carrig into the lead. Aghada slowly got to grips with Tom Houlihan now out playing Hickey. Finally Fleming opened Aghada’s account on the 9th minute with a free. With both defences on top scores were hard to come by. Aghada’s Alan Morrissey, Shane Wall and Conor Rice were in superb from as were Diarmuid O’Driscoll and Tyrone Kennedy for Carrig. Aghada pressed forward in numbers but again unable to find the net when a Shane Scanlon rasper ricocheted of the cross bar. Then on the 18th m Aghada Capt Sean O’Donoghue pointed to put Aghada in front. Four minutes later Barry Casey replied for Carrig. With Fleming now operating on the forty Aghada added two more minors to leave the score at the short whistle 0-4 to 0-2

On resumption Carrignavar were again first to score with a Casey point but how Aghada responded three points in ten minutes two from placed balls by Fleming and one from the boot of Alan Creedon Aghada were now well on top but failed to put Carrig a way with goals going a begging . Carrignavar tried hard to get into the game moving Casey to centre forward this was followed with points from Mark Crowley and Martin Hickey to a free from Fleming left a goal between the sides. Stephen Casey moved from Centre back to mid field to partner Hickey and this gave Carrig and platform to come at Aghada as time ran down but to no avail.
Teams Aghada
Evan Kennedy, Conor Rice, Alan Morrissey, Shane Wall, Richie Condon, Paudie Wall, Eoin Healy, Sean O Donoghue (Captain) (0-1), Tom Houlihan, Alan Creedon (0-1), Michael Russell, Shane Scanlon, Ken O’Brien (0-1), Cian Fleming (0-5 4 frees), Finbarr Day subs Andrew O Donoghue for Russell 15th m (inj), Luke O Keeffe for Condon 38th m

Carrignavar Cian Dorgan, Richard Mullins, Diarmuid O’Driscoll (Captain), Daniel Coleman, Tyrone Kennedy, Stephen Casey, Darren Noonan, Martin Hickey (0-1), Michael Minihane, Paul O’Keeffe, Aidan Hegarty, John O’Sullivan, Ronan Spillane, Barrie Casey(0-3 2 frees ), Mark Crowley (0-1)

Last Saturday the 12th of April was a great day for Aghada when our U21 footballers were crowned East Cork A grade champions after a fine win over Carrignavar. Played in the splendid Lisgoold grounds, Kenneth O’Brien had the 1st real chance of a score but saw his goal bound effort well saved by the Carrignavar ‘keeper. A minute later the opening score did arrive with a pointed free for Carrig. The Aghada defence was in outstanding form however for the hour with Evan Kennedy extremely solid between the sticks and the 2 corner backs, Shane Wall and Conor Rice the pick of an excellent defensive unit. Up front, while scores were hard to come by, Aghada continued to create goal chances throughout the game. Shane Scanlon rattled the crossbar on 13 minutes; this was just after a Cian Fleming free had tied the game. Aghada were dealt a major blow when centre forward Michael Russell was forced off injured, however Andrew O’Donoghue won some great ball after he came on as replacement. At midfield Tom Holohan and Sean O’Donoghue gave Aghada a strong foothold in the contest and the latter chipped in with a fine point on 18 minutes. Carrignavar wasted no time responded with a like score, but Aghada finished the half strongly with 2 nice points from Fleming and O’Brien. Aghada would have the wind in the second half and led on a 04 V 0-2 scoreline. A free inside a minute of the restart, reduced the lead, but Aghada then hit 3 unanswered points from Alan Creedon, and 2 Cian Fleming frees. It was a 3 point game when Carrig pointed from play with a quarter to go. Ken O’Brien saw another goal chance deflected out for a ’45 which Cian Fleming pointed and Aghada were full value for the 4 point lead entering the closing stages. Carrignavar managed to pull one back with 3 minutes left, but from here to the final whistle, there was to be no more scores for either side. So Aghada were East Cork champions and it was left to the new East Cork Board chairman Michael O’Brien making his first ever presentation, to present the cup to captain Sean O’Donoghue. Well done to all involved plus manager Sean O’Keeffe and his selectors, Aiden Berry and Martin O’Donoghue.
