Mon 30th Aug U21 B Hurling championship semi final

Aghada 2-13 Fr O'Neill's 0-12

Aghada sweep Fr O’Neill’s aside with powerful finish.
A large crowd enjoyed a great game of hurling played by two good teams on a lovely summers evening in Ballinacurra.
The game was slow to start with both sets of defence on top. Aghada scored 1st with two frees from man of the match Finbarr Day on the 5 and 6th minute. As the 1st Quarter finished both sides were level at 3 points a piece. By the 24th minute it was five all then O’Neills went two clear but a great point from Eoin Savage at full forward left us just a point be hide 6 points to seven at the short whistle. Scores were hard to come by as both sets of backs were on top for Aghada Michael Russell was outstanding at centre back as was Conor Rice behind him. To be fair to O’Neill’s our backs worked hard and closed their danger men down.

On resumption Day landed a 65 to level the game a minute after the restart. He followed with another free on the 33rd m but from the puck out the sides were level again for the 7th and last time. Tim Hartnett and Shane Wall started to made inroads at centre field and the Aghada forwards enjoyed more ball as a result Eoin Savage finished a good move to the net and Aghada were 3 clear. O’Neills hit back for a minor but could not get the ball in the danger area (so outstanding were our half backs) and never looked like scoring a goal indeed with the exception of one point all O’Neill’s scores came from long range. The next ten minutes were again had stalemate as both sides failed to score, then on the 49m O’Neill’s made a bit of a rally getting to points on the trot to leave just the bare mi for 6th time minimum between the sides.
But how Aghada responded a great point from Savage had us on the road again Finbarr added one on the 25th m to go three clear. Aghada were by now all over O’Neill’s then came the score that would grace any field as Day gathered a high ball in traffic and with a lot of work to do he ghosted past defenders and gave the keeper on chance. On the stroke of full time he landed a minor for a personally tally of 1-11.
Aghada now meet the winners of Castlelyons and Youghal in the final next Sunday night.

Thurs 26th Aug M F C Aghada 2-8 Erins Own 1-12

Aghada lost out for third night in a row in championship action, after another gut wrenching defeat in this minor championship game played at Shanagarry. We started off well in this match, with an early Josh O Shea goal. Every time we looked like pulling away, Erins own got back on level terms. The scoreline at halftime was Aghada 1-5 Erins Own 1-5. During the course of the second half it was tit for tat, with a few minutes remaining we were leading by 2 points courtesy of a second goal scored by Tommy Dobbin. In the final few minutes the referee awarded Erins Own some soft frees, which they converted and when the final whistle was blown Erins Own were victorious. Aghada put up a fine performance and were missing a few players, who would have helped our cause. The referee was not helpful to either side blowing the whistle far too much, as the match was a fine fair championship match.

Wed 25th Aug J B H C Aghada 0-18 Erin's Own 3-12

Aghada were beaten in this match after a titanic battle, a game we so easily could of won. This game was a cracking match from start to finish, with Swannie and Babóg keeping things tight at the back and Vincent, Finbarr and Tony keeping the score board ticking over up front we only trailed by a goal at half time 1-8 to0-8.The second half was tit for tat, but we were unlucky that we didn’t avail of some decent goal scoring chances. We conceded two soft goals, and then with 5 minutes remaining Vincent received a straight red. This took away from the fine efforts this side made through out the hour, we could not get scores in the remaining minutes to force a replay. Once again Aghada were left rue what might of been, best for Aghada were Swannie, Conor, Anthony, Finbarr and Tony. Final score Aghada 0-18 Erins Own 3-11.

Tue 24th Aug Senior football Championship

Aghada 1-9 Duhallow 2-8

Heartbreak again for Aghada as late late goal sinks the seasiders.

A last minute goal saw Duhallow just get the better of Aghada in a fascinating game. A high lobbing ball from Donnacha O’Connor found the fist of Sub T J Bodie who rattled the net for a two point lead for Duhallow the 1st time they led since the 13th m. Aghada fought back but could find no way through the Duhallow defence who were magnificent in the second half.
The Divisional side started the better and had Aghada under pressure but some outstanding defence by Aghada held them to just two scores which came from frees by O’Connor
Cian Fleming opened the scoring for Aghada on the 12th m and a minute later he finished a fine move to the net which was set up 1st by Brendan O’Flaherty who laid it off to James O’Connell who set Fleming free.
With Pearse O’Neill lording it at centre forward Aghada were rampant. Our halfback line was well on top with Connelly and Power driving forward. Points flowed Fleming pointed a free Healy and O’Flaherty scored two great scores from play as did Fleming who by now was flying. Aghada were well on top and should have had another goal as both Fleming and O’Flaherty had a clear change but some how it was cleared. Aghada finished the half with two points from Fleming to leave them ahead at the brake by 1-7 to 3 points after playing with a stiff breeze.

To be fair to Duhallow they used half time wisely making the vital switch’s .Fleming again got a gem of a point with in 1 minute of the restart to go 8 points clear. Little did we think that we would have to wait until the 51st minute for our next score off the boot of Michael Russell. Aidan Walsh now at midfield started to show but still Aghada were in control but having won the ball dropped it and Duhallow ran at Aghada and goaled in the 34th m. Aghada dropped two more balls straight away and by the 36th minute there was only 3 points in it. Aghada steadied the ship but could not make head way up front as Duhallow sealed the holes in their defence. Another Aghada error gave O’Connor a soft free as we entered the last Quarter. Another Duhallow point followed before the afore mentioned Russell point put Aghada two in front again. For the next 8 minutes it was stale mate but on the 56th m Duhallow pointed and a minute later came that goal from attack that looked harmless. It was hard luck on Aghada who played great football and deserved a draw a least. The lost of Brian Wall and J P O’Connor to injury was a big factor. Kieran O’Connor played a captains part and had an out standing game on Donnacha O’Connor

Senior Football championship Tues24th Aug
Aghada1-9VDuhallow2-8
Heartbreak for Aghada at the end of this tough and exciting championship match as we met with defeat. Aghada started off slow in the first 10 minutes with Duhallow getting 2 early points from Donnacha O Connor frees. Once we settled down we proceeded to dominate and play great football for the rest of the first half, our backs were extremely tight, midfield competed hard and up front Pearse, Brendan and Cian were giving Duhallow's defence a tough time. Cian scored 1-5 in the first half and at half time we lead 1-7 to 0-3 and looked in a very strong position. The second half got underway and Cian got the first score to put us 8 points up. During the next 15 minutes this game turned and after we gave up possession of the ball, Duhallow moved the ball quickly leading to a goal scored by Niall Fleming. We gave away 2 soft scores after the goal and now we were only leading by a goal, we got our 2nd and final point of the half courtesy of Mike Russell. With 4 minutes remaining we lead by one when Donnacha sent in a hail mary shot, as it dropped a Duhallow sub punched the ball easily to the back of our net .As hard as Aghada tried in the final few minutes we could not retrieve the situation and at the final whistle Aghada players were left shattered beaten on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-9.Alot of soul searching will be done as to how we lost this match. Best for Aghada on the night were Kieran who played a captains role, Johno and Brian before both had to be taken off up front Pearce and Cian who scored 1-6 played well through out. Aghada 3-10 Killeagh/Ita's 1-5

Aghada advanced to meet Erins own after a great victory last Friday night. We were well on top all through this game, Ger O Brien, Brian Condon and James O Leary were best for Aghada. The Aghada defence kept the Erins own forwards very quiet, and the half back line stopped Killeagh attacking with great marking and telling tackles. Up front our new full forward Georgio was causing havoc scoring a goal, and with the extremely lively Ronan Kennedy scoring fine points Killeagh couldn’t cope. A fine victory for all involved. Fri 13th U21 B Hurling Aghada 0-15 Russell Rvs 0-9

A funny game Aghada never looked in trouble but found it hard to shake of the Rovers.
For the 1st quarter it was tit for tat as Aghada answered the Rovers scores until the 13m when Cian Fleming got the 1st of three great points all from the same tight angle for Aghada to pull ahead. Before that it was left to Ronan Kennedy for Aghada’s scores, as he oozed class. Finbarr added a few frees and by the short whistle we were 9 points to 4 to the good.
On resumption Aghada opened the Rovers up but no scores came from it. The Shanagarry boys settled and now with the wind to there backs brought the game to Aghada and slowly pulled the game back. Outstanding displays by the Aghada backline and poor shooting from placed balls made life hard for the Rovers. Michael Russell was at his best as he commanded centre back. The fullback line of James Daly, Conor Rice and Adian O’Connell were outstanding. As the game went on Eoin Healy started to dominate up front when the need was greatest especially when O’Donoghue got a red card with ten minutes left on the clock and we were down to 14 men. While Aghada were always ahead there were a few hairy moments near the end but Aghada were well able to handle in and from the clearances both Finbarr and Tim Hartnett stretched the led to 6 points at the call of time

Killeagh/Ita's or Fr O'Neills await in the semi final.

Aghada won this match but we were made work harder than was needed to progress to the semi-final.Aghada settled early and with Cian and Mike Russell playing very well we were soon ahead, but for all our dominance we should of been further ahead. The half-time score was Aghada 0-9 Russell Rovers 0-3.The second half began with Aghada on top,Ronan Kennedy scored 3 classy points and Eoin Healy was playing well at centre forward chipping in with a point and Finbarr Day fired over a few.We were conceding alot of needless fouls in the second half and if Russell Rovers had converted more we might of been asked more serious Questions. The full back line defended very well all through and after we lost Andrew through a straight red card,we held out against late Russell Rovers pressure.Full time score Aghada 0-15 Russell Rvrs 0-9.We now meet the winners of Killeagh/Itas and Fr O Neills in the semi-final.Aghada team and scorers J O Brien A O Connell(capt) C Rice J Daly S O Gorman M Russell S Wall T Hartnett0-1 D Rice K Higgins E Healy 0-1 C Feming0-4 W Leahy F Day0-6 R Kennedy0-3.

Carrigtwohill 2-8 Aghada 2-7

At the end of a great battle Carrig had just about edged this game. There was nothing at all between the two sides throughout and scores were traded time and again.

It was an heroic performance from Aghada and the lads can feel very proud of their efforts.Charlie Terry led the charge scoring an impressive 2-2 on the night but nobody could feel they let anyone down. If Charlie drove the team on in the forwards, captain Aaron Berry kept us in the game on numerous occasions with a great performance between the posts. Aaron was helped hugely by Luke O Connell, a tower of strength at full back.
Others to impress were Jack MacDonald, Gavin Kelly and Edward Leahy.

Overall, Carrig just deserved the win but this panel did their parents, their club and their mentors proud, as usual.

Wed 4th Aug I H C Aghada 3-11 Fermoy 2-10

Last year against Drispey we saw the return of the Aghada determination and how welcome come it was.
Tonight saw another chapter a result dug out of hard work, determination and a never say die attitude.
After 2 minutes of the start we were 1-1 down as Fermoy were rampant. Trevor settler matters with two points one from a placed ball. After that it was point for point until Aghada hit 3 in a row to bring it back to a one point game despite some outstanding Fermoy running. Fermoy added a point before Aghada were awarded a harmless free 40 metres out on the sideline. Trevor’s free deceived all and found the net and Aghada were away. Trig added two frees and the ever improving Pearse O’Neill added a point to put Aghada ahead on the call of half time by 1-9 to 1-5 having played with a strong wind hardly enough. Indeed Aghada were lucky enough to be so far ahead as Fermoy ghosted into scoring areas and Aghada were at the pin of their collar to hold out. Aghada’s rearguard held out against all comers especially Paul Kilbane who excelled through out. For the first ten minutes Aghada suffered at centre field by then Melvin and O’Keeffe took over and Aghada were motoring
On resumption Fermoy pressed hard and reduced the gap to a point after a minute. Then came their goal a long long range free taken by their goal keeper landed on top of the full back line and was ushered over the goal line for to level the game. Aghada were now under constant bombardment but some how held out Trig added two points against the run of play to led again. Then came the second long long range free taken by their goal keeper which was only just held out by a might save from Day, but at the expense of a 65 which was converted. Aghada by now found it hard going against the wind as Fermoy piled on the pressure and when the Fermoy goalkeeper again hit another might free it again found the net only to be ruled out for a square ball. Aghada finished with two goals one from Trig and the other from Pearse which came at the death as we led by a point, to give us a four point win. In between Fermoy could only add four points from frees such was the grip that Aghada imposed playing into the teeth of a gale. An old style Aghada victory and most welcome

O’Keeffe and O’Neill strike late as Aghada earn battling victory

by Therese O’Callaghan Irish Examiner

Aghada had to dig deep in this Evening Cork IHC fourth-round tie at a windswept Youghal last evening, but grinding out results is nothing new to the east Cork men.
When the game was on a knife edge, two of their great servants, Trevor O’Keeffe and Pearse O’Neill, responded with the two crucial late goals. O’Keeffe emerged man-of the match with his tally of 2-7 and while his first goal was lucky; his second proved crucial three minutes from time as Aghada trailed by a point. Then on 60 minutes O’Neill was at the end of an O’Keeffe 65 to flick home from close range to seal the victory and hand Aghada a quarter-final clash with Kilworth.
This game was a dogfight from pillar to post. Fermoy started out playing into the teeth of a very strong wind and had the ball in the net inside two minutes after Jack Hutchings soloed through.
O’Keeffe kept the Aghada scoreboard ticking over with Cian Fleming and Ger Melvin firing some excellent points.
By the end of the opening quarter, Fermoy led 1-5 to 0-6 with their out¬standing free-taker Brian O’Sullivan in splendid form.
Then came the turning point of the first 30 minutes when an O’Keeffe free from 40 metres out on the sideline dipped all the way to the far corner of the net with the sun blinding the Fer¬moy defenders.
Aghada remained in the driving seat striking another three points without reply to lead at the break, 1-9 to 1-5. The north Cork side re-jigged their lineout and only had to wait seven minutes to narrow the gap after Paudie Shanahan was at the end of a long de¬livery to give Martin Day no chance. However, O’Keeffe bagged another pair of points, the second a beauty from the end line, to put Aghada clear.
However, Fermoy kept the pressure on and had the ball in the net soon af¬terwards, but referee Diarmuid Kirwan disallowed the goal for a square in¬fringement.
Yet, Fermoy held their nerve and with James O’Sullivan driving them on, Brian O’Sullivan scored three tremendous points from placed balls to edge them back in front, 2-9 to 1-11 with five minutes remaining. But Aghada rose to the challenge brilliantly. In the remaining minutes, they scored twice and Fermoy once, but it was the colour of the flags that mattered.
O’Keeffe rattled the net, quickest to react to the rebound when Fleming’s shot was initially saved and while Brian O’Sullivan pegged back a point, O’Neill’s goal at the death was the score that finally killed off Fermoy.
