| Cork U14 B Hurlers defeat Tipperary to win Sonny Walsh Tournament
The Cork U14 B Hurling Team captured the Sonny Walsh Hurling Tournament in Walsh Park on Sunday last defeating Tipperary on a scoreline of 2-08 to 0-02. Cork were very impressive in the group games with all 24 players on the panel playing a vital part in victories over Kilkenny (3-11 to 0-7), Clare (2-10 to 0-04) and Wexford (4-18 to 1-04) on Saturday at St.Saviours GAA Grounds to qualify for the final against Tipperary on Sunday. The opening half was a very close affair with Cork playing against the wind. Brendan McCarthy opened Cork's account in the fifth minute and this was quickly added to by team captain John O'Sullivan following great work by Sean Griffin at full forward. With the Cork full back line of Edward Gaffy, Dara O'Brien &
Dean Linehan defending stoutly to deny the Tipperary forwards time
& space on the ball, Tipperary's scoring chances were limited.
Steve O'Flynn in the Cork goal was solid & composed throughout
while Kevin Moynihan, Ian Cahill & Daniel Harrington played superbly
in the Cork half back line and their tight marking and long clearances
frustrated the Tipperary team. Points by Tipperary's Karl Collins & Jordan Moloney had the sides level approaching half time but good work by Tiernan O'Connell was finished off with a great point to ensure a Cork lead at half-time. Cork started the second half superbly with a goal inside the first minute by John O'Sullivan. This was added to immediately with a point by man of the match Dermot Twomey who displayed great fielding ability throughout the game. With Cork sensing victory they attacked at every opportunity, two pointed frees by John O'Sullivan extended Cork's lead to 7 points. With the Cork defence holding Tipperary scoreless, a brace of points from Cork's Darragh Fitzgibbon and a well taken goal by Tiernan O'Connell secured a famous Cork win who recorded their second successive title in this competition. Special mention to Eric O'Keeffe of Na Piarsaigh who was outstanding at centre back in the group games before sustaining a leg injury that ruled him out of the final. Over the four games Cork scored an impressive 11-47 while only conceding 1-17. John O'Sullivan was top-scorer with 4-10 followed by Brendan McCarthy (1-07), Darragh Fitzgibbon (1-06), Sean Griffin (2-02), Dermot Twomey (1-03), Tiernan O'Connell (1-02), Liam Dineen (0-5), Adam Murphy (1-01), Kevin Moynihan (0-3), Tristan Foley (0-3), Ian Cahill (0-2), John Looney (0-2), Sean Howard (0-1), Kieran Cagney (0-1) & Cillian Broderick (0-1). Cork Hurling Development Squads in action this weekend...
It’s the turn of the hurling development squads this weekend when
the Fe16, Fe15 and Fe14
teams are all in action across their respective Munster Championships. Following
very
successful football weekend back in July, the hurlers hope to build on their
success.
PRO of Coiste na nOg Cian O’Brien spoke on behalf of the Coiste na
nOg Board “this
weekend Cork will have 7 development squads in action at four different
venues across
Munster. These venues include Waterford for the Fe14, Cork will host both
Fe15
tournament in Carrigaline and Fe17 Tournament in Mallow with the Fe15Bs
in Clare, and
finally the Fe16s will travel to Tipperary.
All squads involved have been training hard over the season under the watch
of County
Games Manager Kevin O’Callaghan and GDA Brian Murphy through the ‘player
pathway
programme’ ,This programme is in its first season. All school of excellence
teams and
development squads have been working with their mentors throughout the season.
They
have also received nutrition talks and have had physical development sessions
under the
guidance of Cork Senior Hurling trainer Mark McManus.
Under the new structures brought in this year under Coiste na nOg, was a
development of a
master calendar which set aside dates since April for all the development
squads for training
and playing games. These dates have proved to be very important to the team
development
as it allows for development in a structured way.
We wish all the teams and their mentors the best of luck in their championships
this
weekend. Let’s hope the school of excellence player of today will
be an All-Ireland winning
captain of tomorrow”.
Cork Fe16s will be first in to action on Saturday
in Tipperary when the Cork A team will
travel to Littleton where they will take on Galway in their first game while
the Cork B team
will travel to Templederry where Limerick will be their opening match.
