AGHADA COUNTY HURLING FINALS 1889 TO 2005

The year was 1889 just four years after the club was founded Aghada qualified for our first county final, having beating St. Mary’s in the semi Aghada were pitted against Inniscarra. The match was fixed for the polo grounds in Ballincollig. Aghada thought that the match should be played at Caherlag as it was more central. The polo grounds were 25 miles from Aghada while only 6 miles from Inniscarra. A very large meeting of Gaels took place in Aghada village under the chairmanship of Mr. J. O’Callaghan. In his opening address he stated “everyone that was acquainted with the rules of the GAA knew that foremost amongst them was one which stated that the ground for playing should be fixed so as to be equally convenient to both team”. The Aghada Hon Secretary Mr. Walsh went on to state that one of the reasons why the match was fixed for the polo grounds was "that the officers of Ballincollig Barracks expressed a wish to see the contest". The County board awarded the title to Inniscarra. Team Wm. Higgins Captain, J O’Connell, J Walsh, W. Cunningham , David Leahy, Dan Lynch, J. Cunningham, R. Geary, M McCarthy, J. Meehan, B Sliney, J. O, Shea, W. O’Connell, W. Wall, Jeremiah Walsh, J. Fitzgerald, C. Barry, Tom Foley, J McCarthy, J. O’Connell

The following year 1890 Aghada were back in the final where the eventual All Ireland winners Aghabullogue defeated them in a one sided game. Aghada objected to Aghabullogue as an Aghabullogue man named as Twomey had played in the Dublin County championship. The objection was lost because Twomey had played football with the Erin’s Hope club not hurling. this game was played in Blarney it seems Aghada had no bother travelling there. The Aghada team was Wm. Higgins Captain, J O’Connell, W. Cunningham, John Cunningham, David Leahy, T’ O’Mahony, John Clew, Tom Foley, R. Geary, Dan Lynch, J. O’Connell, Dan Wall Denis Wall, W. Wall, J. McCarthy, C. Barry.

Aghada were to wait another seven years (1897) before they again reached a County Final. Again defeat was Aghada’s lot as Blackrock won their 8th title in ten years.

Now came the long wait 1989 before Aghada were to reach a hurling final again. This time it was a minor final in which three of today’s team played Ronan Dwane, Pat Cashman, and Davie Creedon. Kenneth O’Keeffe was one of the selectors. Jim “Sponge” Motherway captained the side, which read as follows – J. Murphy, P. O’Brien, M. Crowley, R. Cashman, G. Murray, P. Cashman, J. Motherway, R. Lewis, N. Murray, W. McCann, D. Creedon, C. O’Riordan, K. Walsh,R. Dewane,M. O’Connor. Subs: I. Roche, C. O’Brien. The same year Aghada Won the Junior Football County for the 1st time after a replay.

1n 1991 Aghada contested their 1st junior hurling County against old opponents Aghabullogue 101 years after their senior final. Who will forget Richie Lewis’s long range free to level matters and send the game into a replay. Aghabullogue proved two strong for Aghada in the replay. The Aghada team lined out as follows – M. Hennessy, P. Sisk, C. Reaney, J. Motherway, P. O’Brien, A. Devoy, K. O’Keeffe, P. Cashman, D. Morrissey, R. Dwane, B. Aherne, R. Lewis, P. Cashman, C. Counihan, M. Lewis. The same Year Aghada defeated Ballincollig to win their 1st Football County in the intermediate grade.

1997 and 2002 saw Aghada back in 2 more County minor hurling finals. In ’97 we were defeated by a Tom Kenny inspired Grenagh. The team that day was V. Morrissey, M O’Shea, A. In 1993 Aghada moved up to the intermediate grade in hurling but had to wait until 2000 make a county final. Again defeat was Aghada’s lot, when Douglas were victorious is the worst conditions imaginable for a game of hurling to be played in. Aghada team that day. Ml. Lewis, Colm O’Brien, Alan Devoy, Darren Lee, Eoin Cotter, Pat Cashman, Kenneth O’Keeffe, Ronan Dwane, John Murphy, Gerard Melvin, Vincent Morrissey, Declan Devoy, Trevor O’Keeffe, Dave Creedon, Richie Lewis.
