U21 HURLING 11

U21 HC Manager Trevor O'Keeffe

Mon 29th Aug U21 Hurling Championship Aghada 0-15 St Catherines 1-13

O what disappointment having come back from the dead and levelling the game and to lose it with the second last puck of the match.
There was very little between both sides and in the end it came down to a bit of luck.
Both teams gave of their all in a hard tough and skilful game of hurling, with some great scores by both sides.
It was nip and tuck for the opening twenty minutes as both teams exchanged points
The Aghada forwards looked sharp especially Ronan Kennedy who landed three points in this period. Eoin Savage was also causing fierce problems for the Saints as he plucked balls out of the sky. As the half closed Aghada applied the pressure and were rewarded with three Fleming points and Savage had the last say with a great point to lead by 10 points to 6 at the brake.

On resumption the Saints made a few moves and this curtailed Aghada a bit, points followed as the Saints won the midfield battle despite outstanding displays by Andrew O’Donoghue and Willie O’Shea in the fullback backline. Outside them Russell and Conor Rice coped well. The defining score of the game came on the 50m when Catherines rattled the net after a solo run which gave them the lead for the 1st time since the opening minutes. Shane Wall replied with a minor to pull it back to a one point game but the Saints came again and landed two to go three points clear with time running out. Ronan Kennedy was fouled inside the small square but the resulting semi penalty hit by Fleming was stopped and cleared. These spurred Aghada on and in a three minute spell Savage, Fleming (free), and Leahy posted points to level the game in injury time
But alas the Saints had the last say and now meet Carrigtwohill in the semi final.

Sat 23rd July U21 B H C Aghada 2-14 Fr O'Neills 2-8

Aghada advanced in the U21 B hurling championship with a great win over old rivals Fr O’Neills in Carrigtwohill last Sat night 23rd July.
Aghada lined out without the inspirational Ml Russell (recovering from a broken finger), but it mattered little as the lads lifted their game. None more so, that Collinwood star Josh O’Shea who proved that football skills come in handy, when he kicked his opening goal on the 21st minute. His second goal came on the 54th minute when he ghosted behind the defence and taped the sliotar to the net following a great catch by man of the match Eoin Healy at centre forward. This goal was vital as O’Neills converted a 21 yard free moments before.
The game opened with two points from Cian Fleming and Shane Wall on the second and third minute. Then the scoring stopped till Joshes goal on the 21st minute. Both sets of backs were on top at this stage but O’Neills had levelled the game by the 16th m. minutes later they led for the first time. It was tit for tat f the half closed, but two long range frees from Fleming saw us go in at half time level 1-4 to seven points.
On resuming Aghada went about their business with gusto as Fleming led the charge with four points one from play, one from a free and two 65s in a five minute spell. Minutes later Healy landed two magnificent minors as Aghada surges clear. Then from the puck out the ref Pa Beausang fell and broke his ankle. It looked like the game had to be abandoned by for the intervention of the umpire who happened to be a ref and he finished the game. Healy landed another point followed by Fleming. O’Neills then got the afore mentioned lifeline but Josh put paid to that. Ronan Kennedy, Shane Wall and Healy added three more minors before O’Neills were awarded a semi penalty on the 34th m which was converted but mattered little.
Andrew O’Donoghue, Dave Rice, and Eoin Savage also had fine games.
The next fixture is against Cobh or St Catherines on Wed 17th Aug.
