Bandon go into overdrive and book date with Catherine sBy Therese O'Callaghlan Irish Examiner BANDON pulled clear in the second half of this Cork IHC quarter-final
replay at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday to set up a last
four meeting with St Catherine’s. BANDON: J McSweeney; J O’Donovan, P Crowley, AGHADA: M Day; K O’Connor, J P O’Connor (Capt) |
Bandon get out of jail as late late point secures replay. Bandon with 18 wides to their name had to wait until the 63rd minute when Darren Crowley landed a free from the halfway line to save the day, after Aghada held them scoreless since the 46th minute. Aghada opened the scoring with a Trigger point on the opening minute
as the Eastern Men were on top. Then high drama when a minute later
Tomas O’Donoghue was sent off for a head butt. This seemed to
inspire Bandon as they scored two minors in the space of a minute
to lead. Then more Drama as Aghada’s Eoin Healy got his matching
orders after an off the ball incident. Both teams then set up with
the extra man behind the ball, as the game became a dog fight. Both
side found it hard to score, and it took wing back Tom O’Neill
to brake the deadlock. Bandon went four clear just after the brake and it looked bleak for
Aghada, then up stood Trigger with three points (1 free and a 65)
in as many minutes. And it was game on. On the 54m Trigger levelled from a placed ball as Aghada turned the
game. Aghada scented blood and drove forward as Bandon were guilty
of missed chances. Fleming put Aghada clear for the 1st time since
the opening minute with only three left on the clock. Martin Day Subs Shane Wall (0-1)for Savage 22nd m. Aidan Cotter for Leahy 1/2 time, 43rd m. Michael Galvin for Wall

Crowley strikes late to earn Bandon a replay By Denis Hurley Irish Examiner Monday, August 22, 2011 Bandon 0-12 Aghada 0-12 With 63 minutes elapsed and the east Cork side holding a precarious 0-12 to 0-11 lead, Crowley stepped up to convert a free from his own 65 after assuming placed-ball duties following the substitution of his brother Ronan. It looked as if the beaten county finalists of 2007 and ‘08 had blown their chances of reaching the last four as they had allowed a two-point lead with 13 minutes left to evaporate — three points from Aghada’s best performers, Cian Fleming (two) and Trevor O’Keeffe turning the game. With a wides tally that had reached 18 by the end, Bandon had nobody but themselves to blame for the position they found themselves in. But, when Aghada’s Pearse O’Neill was blown up for over-carrying in the added time, Crowley did the needful to set up the replay. While Bandon can take a lot of positives from the game, such as the fine performance of Eoghan O’Donovan at wing-back and Charles Dullea’s emergence at midfield as the contest wore on, the poor shooting – most notably early in the first-half when they were comfortably the better team – will be a big concern ahead of the next game. In contrast, while Aghada were far more economical and had J P O’Connor and Kieran O’Connor to thank for some fine defending, they had to rely on the free-taking of O’Keeffe for a lot of their scores, suffering from the early sending-off of centre-forward Eoin Healy. That was for striking in the seventh minute, but amazingly it was not the first red card of the match, Bandon’s number 11 Tomás O’Donoghue being dismissed for a head butt with just over two minutes gone. The extra space in attack seemed to suit the Lilywhites more, however, as Ronan Crowley benefited from the low deliveries to him and Mark Sugrue also revelled in being allowed to run. In addition, Donagh Lucey was cleaning up at centre-back, but despite such superiority, Bandon’s half-time lead was only 0-7 to 0-4, with nine wides and two good Kieran O’Connor blocks on goal chances, denying Jason McCarthy and Darren Crowley. The loss of Lucey to injury in first-half injury time disrupted the defensive balance, though, and with O’Keeffe finding his range from frees and Pearse O’Neill becoming more prominent, Aghada were right back in it, Fleming cutting the lead to one with 20 minutes left. Bandon’s shooting continued to frustrate and Aghada goalkeeper Martin Day also denied Roy Payne and Darren Crowley. It looked as if it wouldn’t be their day, but they retained just enough luck to share the spoils. Scorers for Bandon: R Crowley 0-4 (0-3f, 0-1 65), D Crowley (0-1f), M Sugrue 0-2 each, D Lucey, J McCarthy, R Payne, A Johnson 0-1 each. Scorers for Aghada: T O’Keeffe 0-6 (0-4f, 0-1 65), C Fleming 0-3, P O’Neill, T O’Neill, S Wall 0-1 each. BANDON: S Murphy; P Crowley, J Burke, J O’Donovan; E O’Donovan, D Lucey, J Walsh; C Dullea, D Crowley; M Sugrue, T O’Donoghue, J Hickey; J McCarthy, R Payne, R Crowley. Subs: K Hurley for Lucey (30, injured), A Johnson for McCarthy (45), D O’Donoghue for R Crowley (58). | Early Wall strike does the trick for Aghada Aghada 1-14 Meelin 0-14 By Ian Cusack Irish Examiner Monday, August 15, 2011 TONY WALL’S early goal proved the deciding score at the end of this exciting fourth round IHC encounter at Mallow yesterday. Having dominated for large periods, and with a tally of 11 wides by the final whistle, Aghada should have won by a more comfortable margin. But they couldn’t kill off a dogged Meelin side that battled until the final whistle. Meelin may feel they could have come away with something from the game and will rue some of their decision making, repeatedly shooting for goal when simple points were on offer and finding Aghada keeper Martin Day in outstanding form. Aghada enjoyed a dream start, getting off the mark with a goal inside two minutes. There was some suspicion of a square ball for Wall’s goal, which came when he doubled on Cian Fleming’s drive into the goalmouth, but the officials were confident it was legitimate and Meelin were left fighting an uphill battle. With Aghada looking the sharper in the opening exchanges Meelin relied on set piece strikes from Eamon Brosnan and Shane O’Riordan to keep in touch. Conversely just one of Aghada’s seven first-half scores came from a dead ball effort. Meelin enjoyed the better of the third quarter but continued to overcomplicate their attacking play. Leading 1-12 to 0-10 with 10 minutes remaining, Aghada looked to go through the motions. But a late flurry from Meelin inspired by Brosnan reduced the gap to just two points before an excellent Ger Melvin point restored the goal advantage which they had rarely looked likely to let slip. Scorers for Aghada: T O’Keeffe 0-7 (4f), T Wall 1-1, G Melvin and P O’Niell 0-2 each, C Fleming and W Leahy 0-1 each. Scorers for Meelin: E Brosnan 0-5 (2f), J Forrest 0-4, S O’Riordan 0-2 (2-65), W Murphy, DJ O’Sullivan and C Murphy 0-1 each. AGHADA: M Day, B Hennessy, JP O’ Connor, K O’ Connor, G Melvin, T O’Neill, M Russell, C Fleming, C Rice, W Leahy, E Healy, E Savage, P O’Neill, T O’Keeffe, T Wall. Subs: S Wall for E Savage (40), A Cotter for Wall (48), J Connelly for Leahy (58). MEELIN: S O’Sullivan, D O’Riordan, D Lenihan, K Collins, J O’Doherty, B O’Sullivan, J Forrest, L Collins, W Murphy, E Brosnan, S O’Riordan, DJ O’Sullivan, J O’Callaghan, J Forrest, C Murphy. Subs: B Collins for O’Callaghan (45). Referee: David Copps (Ballyhea). |
Aghada always had the measure of All Ireland champions Meelin at
a immaculate Mallow venue. Aghada sprinted into the game as Cian Fleming and Ger Melvin supplied plenty of ball to the forwards. Indeed it took only two minutes for Tony Wall to get on the end of a ball sent in by Fleming and flick it past the Meelin goalie. Trevor O’Keeffe pointed from a placed ball a minute later. Meelin replied with a Brosnan free before William Leahy restored Aghada’s lead to four points. The East Cork men had full control at this stage with centre forward Eoin Healy doing mighty work in side him Pearse O’Neill, Tony Wall and Trigger were a constant treat indeed all were to score before the half was out. The All Ireland champions kept in touch from placed balls from Brosnan and some long range one's from Shane O’Riordan.
Turning with the wind Meelin hit the field running a 65 from Shane
O’Riordan, and a point from full forward John Forrest made it
a one point game after just three minutes of the restart. Trigger
steadied Aghada's nerves with two great trade mark points over his
shoulder. The Aghada halfback line of Tom O’Neill, Michael Russell, and
Conor Rice were outstanding and brought a new dimension to the East
Cork men’s play. Aghada now meet Bandon next Sunday in the quarter
final at church road with a 3 pm throw in. Martin Day Subs Shane Wall for Savage 40th m. Aidan Cotter for Tony Wall 46th m. John Connolly for Leahy 58th m. |
| Aghada survived a might Blackrock onslaught that brought them back
to with in three points with only 6 minutes left on the clock and when
a fierce shot flashed across the Aghada goal it looked all up only for
lady luck to intervene in the form of the crossbar as all Aghada held
their breath. Aghada lifted their game after that and fought for every
ball and when Aghada won a free on their own seventy which was moved
forward for descent, Trigger duly obliged deep in added time.
It was all so different in the opening half when Aghada had the strong
wind to their backs and made full use of it. Trigger opened the scoring
with a long range point from a placed ball. Minutes later Tony Wall
done likewise from close range. Aghada were hurling well especially
the mid field partnership of Cian Fleming and Trevor who had a new
lease of life as he popped up every where in defence to help out.
Then we had three minors within a minute two for the Rockies, with
Fleming hitting a great point in between. Aghada were now in control
Trigger and Eoin Healy added points to Blackrock’s one as we
left the opening quarter. Then in the space of two minutes the game
was turned on its head as Fleming scored another point after a sizzling
run. From the puck out the ball was sent back in where Tony Wall won
a great ball out on the sideline and put a inch prefect pass to William
Leahy who made no mistake and found the net. Again Aghada won the
puck out and put the ball into the red zone where Pearse had to work
hard as he got goal side of his man and first timed it to the net.
On resumption it was Aghada’s turn to soak the pressure as
that a fore mentioned onslaught started from the throw in. by the
39th minute the Rockies had shot 4 points with out reply. It would
be the 46th minute before Aghada would score and that was from a placed
ball by Trigger to slightly reduce the pressure. Two more Blackrock
points before Healy landed a great point much to the relief of the
Aghada following. Two more city points followed to leave just a major
between the sides before Trevor added another free on the 51st minute.
After that goal chance Aghada closed down the shop as the Rockies
found it hard to get a foothold for the remaining 6 minutes plus 3
minutes of added time. Team Sub Aidan Cotter for Wall 52nd m |
| Aghada do damage in opening half to see off Rockies Aghada 2-13 Blackrock 0-15 Denis Hurley: Irish Examiner Saturday, June 18, 2011 A STRONG first-half performance was crucial to Aghada’s progression past Blackrock in round two of the Cork IHC at Midleton last night. With the elements at their back in the opening period, the east Cork side recorded all but four points of their final total, including vital goals from William Leahy and Pearse O’Neill, which helped them to an eight-point half-time lead. While the midway point of the second-half had passed before Aghada scored again, Blackrock could not make the most of their territorial advantage, poor shooting letting them down though Mikey Ahern and Derek Gosnell did their best to eat into the deficit, scoring six of their eight second-half points. Bar a late chance for sub Donal Cremin, which hit the crossbar, Blackrock never threatened to get a goal. In addition, the late withdrawal of Aghada wing-forward Eoin Savage into a sweeper role helped to repel Blackrock pressure to ensure that the Imokilly side held out. Early on, it was Aghada making all of the running, midfield pairing of Cian Fleming and Trevor O’Keeffe impressing as they pushed into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead before Leahy’s goal, the wing-forward profiting after being picked out well by Tony Wall. While Ahern responded immediately with a Blackrock point, Aghada then struck for another goal, O’Neill’s pulled effort beating goalkeeper Paul O’Brien at the near post after a long clearance broke. That made it 2-7 to 0-4, and while three Ahern points kept Blackrock in contention, they were still up against it as they faced into the second-half trailing 2-9 to 0-7. Aided by the interval introductions of Eoin Smith in defence and Alan Browne at centre-forward, however, they set about eating into the deficit and had scored four unanswered points by the time 11 second-half minutes had elapsed as Aghada laboured. But for some wides, Blackrock would have been even closer but Aghada were not making things easy for themselves either, Tony Wall going for a goal from a 20m free in the 46th minute when a point would have eased nerves. An O’Keeffe free finally got them off the mark for the second-half but the momentum was still with Blackrock, Browne and Ahern getting them to within a goal, 2-10 to 0-13, and then two Gosnell efforts responding to Eoin Healy’s point to leave just two in it. O’Keeffe’s free from halfway made it a goal game again and while Cremin almost levelled for Blackrock, his shot bounced off the bar and away and deep in injury time O’Keeffe’s fifth free ensured that Aghada would be the ones going into round four, Blackrock having to face Dromina to avoid a relegation play-off. Scorers for Aghada: T O’Keeffe 0-5f, T Walll 0-3f, W Leahy, P O’Neill 1-0 each, C Fleming 0-3, E Healy 0-2. Scorers for Blackrock: M Ahern 0-7 (0-3f), D Gosnell 0-4, A Browne 0-2f, C Kilcoyne, M Drumonnd 0-1 each. AGHADA: M Day; B Hennessy, JP O’Connor, K O’Connor; C Rice, T O’Neill, J Connolly; C Fleming, T O’Keeffe; W Leahy, E Healy, E Savage; P O’Neill, M Galvin, T Wall. Sub: A Cotter for Wall (53). Wed 8th June I H L Div 2 Aghada 4-11 Mallow 2-13
| Aghada had a welcome win in this Intermediate hurling league game
against Mallow. Fielding only ten of the starting fifteen that lined out against Ballygarvan, it was going to be a hard task to move up the table. Aghada opted to play with the wind and it helped them to settle. Two minors from Tony Wall had the home side in front after 4 minutes. For the next few minutes It was stalemate as both sets of backs were on top, then on the 11th Minute Mallow opened their account from a placed ball. They levelled a minute later, before Wall replied with two more points one from a placed ball, the Aghada forwards were now on top especially William Leahy and Owen Savage. On the 19th m Mick Glavin operating at full forward outsmarted the full back and drove for goal. Sub Trevor O’Keeffe who had replaced Savage (inj.) was straight into the fray and landed a lovely point from play. Mallow kept in touch from places balls indeed they must have scored from ten frees or 65’s over the hour. Trevor added a long range free and then the Mallow cul barra dropped a long shot from trigger and it rolled over the line to see Aghada ahead by 2-6 to 4 points as the short whistle approached. Then Mallow got a long range goal to leave only five points between the sides. On Resumption Tony Wall opened with a minor, but with the wind behind them Mallow came at Aghada and by the 41st m had landed six points, with Wall getting one back in between that onslaught. Aghada were now under the cosh having lost Billy Hennessy who had
to go to work Mallow looked dangerous as Aghada were stretched to
the limit. Martin Day made some great stops, while Kieran O’Connor
put the shackles on Mallows best forward with some great hooks and
stops. In a master move Trigger went to mid field and Aidan O’Connell
to the edge of the square, he was no sooner settled in when he scored
one of the best executed goals seen for a long time. Aghada now got
a grip and stemmed the flow. Minutes later O’Connell won a great
ball and laid off a better one, which Wall finished to the net. Tony
added two more frees before Glavin had Aghada’s last score when
again O’Connell and laid off a great ball for Galvin to point.
|
Aghada started the better side but by the 4th m had three bad wides before Trevor converted his 1st free. More wides followed before Ballygarvan opened their account with a point against the run of play. Aghada were well on top with Fleming and Melvin outstanding in the centre of the park but again it was the Ballygarvan side that scored. Eoin Savage who had a fine hour levelled the game on the 11th m. a minute later Trevor landed a placed ball to lead again. Aghada showed some fine stick work but the forwards failed to capitalise on this.. As we left the opening quarter the south east side levelled matters again against the run of play. Aghada were still in control at this stage but a long ball into the corner was whipped across the square and bundled in the net of the opening major. From the puck out Aghada attacked again but hit another wide. From the resulting puck out the keeper found a loose man in the centre of the field who found the full forward and Aghada’s goal was breached again. A point followed and Aghada were in trouble but to be fair responded well with three points on the bounce. from this till the short whistle it was stale mate but Ballygarvan were the happier at the brake leading by 2-3 to 0-6 having played against a big wind.
its not the end of the world we hurled well enough and the couple of weeks hurling will do us no harm. A losers round game with either Kilworth or Blackrock beckons on the weekend of the 12th June.

| McCarthy leads Ballygarvan blitz Ballygarvan 3-13 Aghada 0-11 By Denis Hurley Cork Examiner Saturday, May 28, 2011 DEFEATED after a replay in the final of last year’s competition, Ballygarvan’s quest to go one better and claim the Cork IHC got off to a winning start as they swept past Aghada at Páirc Uí Rinn last night. A pair of goals in the space of four first-half minutes helped to provide a half-time cushion for Ballygarvan. First, Ken Ashman reacted quickest in the 17th minute, after Martin Day saved a fine shot from Dan McCarthy, to poke the loose ball home and give his side a 1-3 to 0-3 lead. Then, four minutes later, the roles were reversed as Ashman played a dangerous ball into the Aghada goalmouth and McCarthy reacted quickest to nip in ahead of Aidan O’Connell before producing a tidy finish. Before that, the game had been fairly even as the sides matched each other point for point and, after the goals, points from Trevor O’Keeffe (free), Cian Fleming and Eoin Savage left just three points in it, 2-3 to 0-6, at the break. Mark Kennefick scored two nice points as they eased further ahead before Ashman and McCarthy combined for the third time to produce a goal on 39, McCarthy doing brilliantly to bat in his team-mate’s good delivery from the left corner. That left it 3-6 to 0-8 and from there the result was never in doubt, with Ballygarvan clicking in attack. Both sides finished with 14 after Ger Melvin of Aghada and Ballygarvan’s Gary White were both dismissed. . Sun 13th March I H L Aghada 1-16 Aghabullogue 1-13
Aghada opened their account in the I H League Div 2 with a great win over Aghabullogue in Aghabullogue last Sunday. Despite losing Ger Melvin and J P O’Connor in the warm up Aghada turned on the heat with Michael Russell outstanding at centre back. Aghada led at the short whistle by the narrowest of margins after playing with the wind. Aghada resumed where they left off in the second half and went 4 points ahead as Trevor scored freely. On entering the last Quarter Aghabullogue got a dodgy goal to narrow the gap. Billy Hennessy was red carded for calling the refs attention to this. Now Aghada faced an up hill battle with 14 men against the wind. Aghada dug deep with minors William Leahy and Tim Hartnett to the fore.
