Aghada Ladies’ Football Club 2011 Yearly Review

The 2011 season has been a very mixed bag for Aghada Ladies’ Football Club with no success at county level but winning a number of trophies at various age groups in the East Cork Division and having a number of girls representing us at Inter county level with Cork.
As a result of success in 2010 at Junior ‘C’ we moved up a grade at both East Cork and County level. In East Cork we met Glanmire in the Championship in Rostellan but unfortunately did not manage to win this game and so ended our East Cork campaign.

In the County, Junior B League we came up against a mixture of teams ability wise - some were very strong and others more on a par with ourselves. We played Carrigtwohill, Bishopstown, Mitchelstown, Fermoy, St Michael’s and Dromtarriffe, winning half our games, which weren’t so bad considering our limited number of players.

In the County Championship we met Tadgh McCarthaigh’s from West Cork but they proved too strong for us.

This year we decided to enter the Munster 7’s for the first time. Despite the bad weather and little success our trip to Clonakilty spurred us on to enter the All Ireland 7’s in September. A great week end was had by all with some success on the pitch and a trip to Croke Park to support the victorious Cork senior team

Our minors played in the A grade section in East Cork but this proved to be slightly beyond us playing Inch Rovers, Fermoy, Carrigtwohill and Glanmire.

Our U16 team played seven games in the league and managed to go to the semi final stage. We won the ‘C’ grade East Cork Championship for the first time with a great victory over Watergrasshill in the final.

2011 has been a long and busy season for the Aghada U14 Ladies’ Football squad. Due to the large number of girls on the U14 panel, we entered two teams in the East Cork League.
The girls overcame Midleton in the A semi final to setup a final pairing against Fermoy. Unfortunately we were beaten in the final. The U14B team reached the semi-final of their league group where they were unlucky to lose to Watergrasshill in extra time.
In May, our U14 girls lost out to Boherbue in the U14 County Championship.

The most exciting event of the year was our participation in Féile Peil na nÓg. Following months of training, planning and anticipation, Féile started, in glorious sunshine on Thursday 30th June. The arrival of our visiting team, Banner Ladies’ Football Club from Ennis, Co. Clare, to Rostellan, signalled the start of three busy days for the Aghada U14 girls.
The team’s involvement in matches on Thursday and Friday and Amanda Bennett’s winning of the ’A’ section of the skills’ competition and qualification for the Skills All Ireland Final on Saturday 2nd July, ensured that the Aghada was involved for all three days of the event.

The final of the East Cork Championship was played in Rostellan in mid-October, an exciting match, with all girls giving of their best. The result was a nail-biting draw. We just came up short in the replay loosing by just two points. Despite being beaten in both finals the teams spirits are high and we thank the girls and their mentors for a great and exciting year so very well done:

We also had a great year with the U12 girls entering two teams at this grade in the league. Our ’B’ side competed well and had lots of fun. The ’A ‘side were our most successful team in 2011 winning the League and championship and only going down by one point to eventual county champions Gabriel Rangers in the ‘D’ county semi final. In September we travelled to Croke Park to cheer on the Cork senior ladies and what a fantastic day we had, topped off by a great win from the Cork team.

Our U 10’s won the only trophy at ‘A’ grade this year winning all their matches and defeating a good Glanmire side that were going for three in a row at this grade in the final.

While Aghada is a very small club it has proved to be a very valuable spoke in the wheel of Cork inter county teams’ successes over the years. 2011 proved no different with five ladies involved.

Emma Farmer was included in the Cork Senior Ladies’ squad for the All Ireland Division 1 League final. Hannah Looney and Cassie Tynan played their part in the 2011 Munster & All-Ireland Final victories by the Cork U14 Ladies’ team and Teresa Looney was part of the team management.

At Minor level Róisín Phelan and Emma Farmer won Munster & All Ireland Medals with the Cork Minor team and Emma Farmer won the TG4 player of the match in the All Ireland Final. Róisín had won the player of the match award in the Munster final win over Kerry.

We are very lucky to have the use of Aghada GAA club grounds at Rostellan and are very thankful for this and for all the assistance from members of the senior club. Underage training takes place each Monday evening in Rostellan at 6.30pm. We are very fortunate to have a large number of willing qualified coaches and administrators, male and female, to help our young girls. We enter teams at all grades and give every girl a chance, entering two teams at most grades. East Cork division has a strong structure and runs many competitions at all grades and skill levels.

We would like to thank the divisional and county boards for all their work in promoting Ladies’ Football in County Cork

Finally thanks to all the parents, supporters, sponsors and everyone who have helped Aghada Ladies Football this year and thanks especially to all the girls who have given us many hours of enjoyment and fantastic memories for 2011.

Aghada 2-2 Glanmire 1-3

Aghada Ladies captured another East Cork title on Friday night when they beat a much fancied Glanmire side in the U 10 A grade Championship final played in Rostellan on Friday night 28th October

Playing against a very strong wind Aghada only scored once in the first half with a Point from a free from Lauren Leinihan.Aghada had most of the play and were unlucky to conceed a goal after 13 minutes ,still they battled hard and turned only 3 points a drift .
The second half was end to end stuff with Aghada striking with a point first but 2 goals in three minutes from Lauren Leinihan and Clare Walsh turned the game on its head.

Glanmire tagged on a couple of points but Aghada held on to stop Glanmire from compleating a Three in a row. This has been a great few weeks for Aghada ladies football with the U 12s winning East Cork also. But the night belonged to the U 10s who have a very well balanced side and should be a very strong team in the future.

Mon 17th Oct U14 Girls EC Champ Final - Aghada 0-15 Fermoy 2-9

In what surely must be one of the best games of the season in East Cork Ladies Football, Aghada U-14 girls earned a much deserved draw with Fermoy in the East Cork Final played in Rostellan on Monday night October 17th.
This was always going to be a close affair. The sides know each other very well having met a number of times already this year including in Féile.
Playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half, Aghada were quick to get on the score board with a point from Amanda Bennett in the 2nd minute Fermoy’s first score was a cracking goal from Isabella Pyne after she made a long run up the left wing. This was followed up by two points from Cork Star Jessica Tonks, one from a free, to leave Fermoy well in control.
Aghada slowly got back on level terms with points from Christine Moran &Hannah Looney. Further points were exchanged by the teams before Aghada pulled ahead with points from A Bennett, H Looney and S Phelan. Teresa O Donoghue had a point for Fermoy and Aghada tagged on two more points before half time to leave the score Aghada 0-10 Fermoy 1-4
The second half was nip and tuck with Aghada getting the opening score but Fermoy hit back with 4 unanswered points. Looney again gave Aghada the lead, but then Aghada were dealt another body blow with a Fermoy goal from Aoife Ring. This saw Fermoy go two clear with 6 minutes of normal playing time left.
Looney and Tonks exchanged points and with full time almost up Aghada were still trailing by 2 points. Fermoy backs soaked up massive pressure from a very determined Aghada forward line. Once again it was up to Aghada and Cork star Hannah Looney to pull this one out of the fire with two great points under extreme pressure well into injury time.
Both teams can be very proud of their performances even though the game had far too many frees in it.

East Cork U 12 B Championship Final Aghada 3-6 Bride Rovers 2-3

Aghada U 12 Girls ended the season on a high with a tremendous victory over a very strong Bride Rovers side in Rostellan on Saturday last.15 Oct 2011
The first half was a very tight affair with the Aghada side playing against the wind .Great work by Mid field pairing of Christine Moran and Moira Mc Govern and a goal from Sara Leahy helped Aghada to a half time lead of 2 points.
Bride Rovers piled on the pressure mid way through the second half with Grace Culloty, Emma Hazelwood and Emily Larkin to the fore and were rewarded with a long range goal , which brought the sides very close however Aghada responded straight away with two well worked points from Bronagh O Connell set up by Aileen McGrath and the other forwards and two goals from Christine Moran put Aghada in a comfortable position. Bride Rovers to their credit never gave up, but the back line of Aghada and in particular the half back line of Kate Wall, Michelle Stafford and Aoife Crowley showed all there experience and coolness as they kept the Rovers forwards out.

Aghada U14 Ladies - Féile Peil na nÓg 2011

After months of training, planning and anticipation, Féile Peil na nÓg started, in glorious sunshine, on Thursday 30th June. The arrival of our visiting team, Banner Ladies Football from Ennis, Co. Clare, to Rostellan, signalled the start of three busy days for the Aghada U14 girls.

The team involvement in matches on Thursday and Friday and Amanda Bennett’s qualification for the Skills Final on Saturday 2nd, ensured that the Aghada was involved for all three days of the event.

After introductions between the Aghada and Banner girls on Thursday 30th, it was time the first match. The Aghada team started well with two points in quick succession. However, the Banner dominated the remainder of the first half, scoring 1-4 without reply. Aghada created chances, but scores evaded them. Despite the tremendous efforts of Amanda Bennett, Sinead O’Driscoll, Julie Moynihan and the other Aghada backs, the Banner maintained their dominance in the second half to emerge winners.

Full Time Score: Aghada 0-3 Banner 2-5

On Thursday evening, it was off to Cork for the Féile parade of participating teams. The Aghada girls entertained all with their singing as they marched through the streets of Cork. At the viewing stand on the Grand Parade, team captain Hannah Looney was presented with a commemorative pennant by the Ladies Gaelic Football President, Pat Quill.

On Friday July 1st, Aghada and the Banner were joined in Rostellan by Fermoy and the Mayo Féile representatives, Westport.

The first match of the day, between Aghada and Westport, was a tightly contested affair. Westport opened the scoring with a point, which was quickly matched by an Aghada point. There followed a Westport goal, but errors by the Westport girls gave Aghada 2 frees, both of which resulted in points. Aghada dominated the latter minutes of the opening period. Hannah Looney and Nessa Fitzpatrick scored 1-2 without reply, to give a scoreline of Aghada 1-5 Westport 1-2 at the break.

In the second half, the Aghada girls never lost focus. An equalising goal from the Mayo girls was quickly answered by an Aghada goal. Claire Wall, Cassie Tynan, Sophie Bawden, Hayley Nagle and the other backs, in combination with Hannah Rose at midfield, worked hard to contain the Westport pressure. Excellent saves by the Aghada goalkeeper, Zoe Cashman and further scores from Hannah Looney and Sorcha Phelan, supported by forwards Christine Moran, Claire Coghlan and Meghan Barnes ensured that, to the delight of the supporters, Aghada emerged winners.

Full Time Score: Aghada 2-8 Westport 2-6

Fermoy had opened their Féile challenge with a 5-3 to 1-2 victory over Westport on Thursday 30th. However, they met stiffer opposition in their opening match on Friday against the Banner. The Banner opened a 1-2 lead, before Fermoy equalised just before the break. Fermoy edged ahead in the second period, but a last minute Banner goal decided the outcome.

Full Time Score: The Banner 2-3 Fermoy 1-4

The teams were closely matched in the first half. Aghada led 0-2 to 0-1 at the break. Fermoy took the lead midway through the second half and maintained this lead to the end.

Full Time Score: Aghada 0-2 Fermoy 1-5

In the final group match, the Banner dominated to beat the Westport girls.

Full Time Score: The Banner 4-5 Westport 0-2

Their win over Westport gave the Banner top position in the group and a place in the Division 1 semi-final.

In the interval after the initial two matches, a representative of each team competed in the Skills competition. The Aghada representative, Amanda Bennett carefully negotiated the course to emerge as the Group winner.

On Friday afternoon, the competition moved to CIT, Bishopstown, where Amanda Bennett won the Division 1 Skills competition and a place in the overall Skills final on Saturday. The Banner lost their semi-final to eventual Division 1 champions Claregalway.

On Saturday 2nd an Aghada contingent and the Banner team supported Amanda in the Skills Final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. While unsuccessful in the final, the club was proud that our team was represented on Féile Finals day.

Thanks to Robin and his team for preparing the pitches for Féile. Many thanks to all of the parents who worked hard both before the event – making our club banner, cleaning the club buildings etc. and during the event – hosting the Banner girls, feeding our visiting teams, stewarding and helping with the smooth running of the matches in Rostellan on Thursday and Friday.

All contributed to making Féile Peil na nÓg 2011 a memorable event for both the U14 panel and their families.

On a very wet and miserable Saturday last, our junior team headed to Clonakilty to take part in the Munster 7's blitz. It was the girls first year taking part in the event and while we were short a number of regulars, the girls put up a good fight against Glanmire, Ballyporeen of Tipperary and Ballypheane. While they were unsuccessful in making it out of the group stages, the girls didnt let the weather dampen their spirits and enjoyed the day and are looking forward to hopefully taking part in the All Ireland 7's blitz in September. We would also like to thank and compliment Clonakilty for the use of their fabulous facilities and also the MLGFA for running such an big event so efficiently
