Sun 5th Sept U21 B Hurling championship final

Aghada 2-4 Castlelyons 1-13

By Derek Kiely Evening Echo
In Ballinacurra

CASTLELYONS Won the East Cork U21 B Final with something to spare on Sunday evening in Ballinacurra with a win over Aghada.
It looked at half time that with a nine point lead the Gerry O’Connell Cup was already on its way to Castlelyons, but a spirited second half display from Aghada at least put some respectability on the score board, but there is no doubt that Castlelyons were fully deserved of the victory.
Tobin added another point on the eleventh minute for Castlelyons, this time from play, but a minute later William Leahy put Aghada on the board for his side’s only score in the first half.
Then Castlelyons added three further points, before the games opening goal.
A long ball in from wing back Cian O’Leary was pulled on just 10 meters out by wing forward Eoin Maye and the ball went crashing into the Aghada net.
Tobin pointed just before half for Castlelyons who used the wind brilliantly and looked home and hosed at the short whistle.
Aghada really had to come out firing early in the second half to have any chance of turning the tide, but it took six minutes for the second half’s first score and it came from Castlelyons when Ronan Fenton drove a ball into the wind and over the bar.
Castlelyons had an eleven point lead on the 38th minute with yet another well executed free from Darren Tobin, but just two minutes later Aghada gave themselves a life line when Finbarr Day picked up a loose ball in attack and struck the ball home for a goal.
Day was on target again from the resulting puck out this time with a point, but the reprieve was short lived as man of the match Robert Feeny sent one over for Castlelyons on the 44th minute.
Castlelyons had another when Darragh Lawlor rifled one over two minutes later and even a late rally from Aghada with a brace of free’s from Day and a goal from Eoin Savage was not enough and Feeny had the last score of the match for Castlelyons who in the end won it by six points.

Mon 30th Aug U21 B Hurling championship semi final

Aghada 2-13 Fr O'Neill's 0-12

Aghada sweep Fr O’Neill’s aside with powerful finish.
A large crowd enjoyed a great game of hurling played by two good teams on a lovely summers evening in Ballinacurra.
The game was slow to start with both sets of defence on top. Aghada scored 1st with two frees from man of the match Finbarr Day on the 5 and 6th minute. As the 1st Quarter finished both sides were level at 3 points a piece. By the 24th minute it was five all then O’Neills went two clear but a great point from Eoin Savage at full forward left us just a point be hide 6 points to seven at the short whistle. Scores were hard to come by as both sets of backs were on top for Aghada Michael Russell was outstanding at centre back as was Conor Rice behind him. To be fair to O’Neill’s our backs worked hard and closed their danger men down.

On resumption Day landed a 65 to level the game a minute after the restart. He followed with another free on the 33rd m but from the puck out the sides were level again for the 7th and last time. Tim Hartnett and Shane Wall started to made inroads at centre field and the Aghada forwards enjoyed more ball as a result Eoin Savage finished a good move to the net and Aghada were 3 clear. O’Neills hit back for a minor but could not get the ball in the danger area (so outstanding were our half backs) and never looked like scoring a goal indeed with the exception of one point all O’Neill’s scores came from long range. The next ten minutes were again had stalemate as both sides failed to score, then on the 49m O’Neill’s made a bit of a rally getting to points on the trot to leave just the bare mi for 6th time minimum between the sides.
But how Aghada responded a great point from Savage had us on the road again Finbarr added one on the 25th m to go three clear. Aghada were by now all over O’Neill’s then came the score that would grace any field as Day gathered a high ball in traffic and with a lot of work to do he ghosted past defenders and gave the keeper on chance. On the stroke of full time he landed a minor for a personally tally of 1-11.
Aghada now meet the winners of Castlelyons and Youghal in the final next Sunday night.

A great victory for Aghada in this semi final played in Ballinacurra on Mon night. This was a fine sporting game from start to finish played by 2 well prepared teams. In the first half it was tit for tat scoring wise, best for Aghada during the half were Seamus, Cian, Eoin Healy, and Finbarr. The score at half time was Aghada0-6 Fr O Neills0-7.Early in the second half Aghada took the lead with an Eoin Savage goal, the game remained tight with only a point separating the sides. Then with ten minutes remaining Finbarr Day got a cracking goal and from their to the finish Aghada saw out the game comfortably, final score Aghada2-12VFr O Neills0-12.A great victory for all concerned, our first appearance in a U21 Hurling final for a number of years awaits us on this coming Sunday night the 5th in Midleton@18.15.Best for Aghada were Seamus O Gorman, Tim Hartnett, Mike Russell and man of the match Finbarr Day. Fri 13th U21 B Hurling Aghada 0-15 Russell Rvs 0-9

A funny game Aghada never looked in trouble but found it hard to shake of the Rovers.
For the 1st quarter it was tit for tat as Aghada answered the Rovers scores until the 13m when Cian Fleming got the 1st of three great points all from the same tight angle for Aghada to pull ahead. Before that it was left to Ronan Kennedy for Aghada’s scores, as he oozed class. Finbarr added a few frees and by the short whistle we were 9 points to 4 to the good.
On resumption Aghada opened the Rovers up but no scores came from it. The Shanagarry boys settled and now with the wind to there backs brought the game to Aghada and slowly pulled the game back. Outstanding displays by the Aghada backline and poor shooting from placed balls made life hard for the Rovers. Michael Russell was at his best as he commanded centre back. The fullback line of James Daly, Conor Rice and Adian O’Connell were outstanding. As the game went on Eoin Healy started to dominate up front when the need was greatest especially when O’Donoghue got a red card with ten minutes left on the clock and we were down to 14 men. While Aghada were always ahead there were a few hairy moments near the end but Aghada were well able to handle in and from the clearances both Finbarr and Tim Hartnett stretched the led to 6 points at the call of time

Killeagh/Ita's or Fr O'Neills await in the semi final.

Aghada 0-15 Russell Rovers 0-9
Aghada won this match but we were made work harder than was needed to progress to the semi-final.Aghada settled early and with Cian and Mike Russell playing very well we were soon ahead, but for all our dominance we should of been further ahead. The half-time score was Aghada 0-9 Russell Rovers 0-3.The second half began with Aghada on top,Ronan Kennedy scored 3 classy points and Eoin Healy was playing well at centre forward chipping in with a point and Finbarr Day fired over a few.We were conceding alot of needless fouls in the second half and if Russell Rovers had converted more we might of been asked more serious Questions. The full back line defended very well all through and after we lost Andrew through a straight red card,we held out against late Russell Rovers pressure.Full time score Aghada 0-15 Russell Rvrs 0-9.We now meet the winners of Killeagh/Itas and Fr O Neills in the semi-final.Aghada team and scorers J O Brien A O Connell(capt) C Rice J Daly S O Gorman M Russell S Wall T Hartnett0-1 D Rice K Higgins E Healy 0-1 C Feming0-4 W Leahy F Day0-6 R Kennedy0-3.

Sat 31st July U21 B Hurling Championship

Aghada 3-14 Cloyne 4-8

For a game with so many scores it was slow to ignite but when it did it was a scorcher
For the1st half Aghada were playing catch up until the 28m when the ever alert Finbarr Day got the 2nd of his two goals to take the lead for the first time. Before this it was tit for tat as Aghada answered every time Cloyne pointed. On the 16th m Cloyne got the 1st of their 4 goals after O’Brien saved the rebound was kicked to the net to put Cloyne clear for the 1st time. Aghada started to grow into the game as Michael Russell and Shane Wall commanded the centre back line. Aghada finished strongly as Day scored 2-1 to leave the half time score 2-4 to 1-4.
If scores were like hens teeth in the 1st half we had a flood in the second as Aghada took control of the game and in reality should have won pulling up. Cian Fleming now on the 40 opened things up and by the 40th m Aghada were 3-8 to 1-7 to the good and worth it. Then Cloyne landed three unlikely goals all for long range frees. The 1st was going wide but the corner forward diverted it to the net. The 2nd deceived Johno and dropped under the bar and the 3rd was again a long free which came about when Johno saved a penalty at the expense of a 70. was again diverted into the net. And suddenly the game was level with 7 minutes left. To be fair to Aghada they hit back all the time with mighty scores from long range none better than Shane Walls effort to regain the lead. Healy and Day added three more points to put Aghada 4 ahead two minutes into injury time a minute later Cloyne pointed and how they attacked looking for the equaliser as the clock ran on and on. Aghada had to defend as their lives depended on it and such relive to here the final whistle which was eventually blown by ref Tim Dineen 7 minutes into injury time. they now meet Russell Rvs in the Q final
