U21 FOOTBALL 10

U 21 FC Manager Aidan Kelleher sel John O'Sullivan, Jim Motherway

by Therese O’Callaghan Irish Examiner
GLANMIRE claimed back-to-back east Cork U21A football titles at Cobh last night, but and as the scoreline suggests, they did not have matters all their own way.
The pity for Aghada who staged a courageous fight back in the closing quarter was that they did not convert enough of the many chances that came their way. They ended the hour with double the number of wides that Glanmire clocked up. That said, Glanmire were craftier, particularly in the manner they took their scores. Against the breeze in the opening half, they toiled hard going to the dressing room two points in front, 0-7 to 0-5, and looked to be heading for a big win when they went six points clear 15 minutes into the second half. But credit must be given to a brave Aghada team, who roared back into contention with a late rally. And they could have stolen a win at the very end, only for a heroic block by Glanmire keeper William O’Flynn.
So, needless to say, the Riverstown outfit were mightily relieved to hear Brian Murphy’s last whistle. They came into the decider as favourites following their big win over Carrigtwohill and while Aghada through the boot of centre forward Cian Fleming matched them early on, indiscipline cost the Rostellan side, giving away too many frees up front for Martin Connolly to convert.
The Kearney twins too started brightly for Glanmire with Daniel bagging a neat’ pair of points inside three minutes. they led 0-5 to 0-3 midway through the first half and they could have been further ahead.
Aghada missed a couple of chances immediately after the restart and were made to pay as Glanmire went down field and kicked four unanswered points from the hard-working Burke (two), Connolly and David Crowley. In front, 0-11 to 0-6 they were in a good position. But the move of Eoin Healy from half-back to midfield spurred Aghada into action as they put in a stormingfinish. They recorded their first flag of 1 the new half on 45 minutes and with Russell landing a trio of finely executed frees from tight angles and a rallying point from Fleming, the margin was cut to one in injury time. With three minutes of added time, they got one last chance. Fleming floated a free into the small box, Ronan Kennedy won possession, but O’Flynn was alert with his block and the ball was cleared to safety.

Heartbreak again
Yes a mighty game of football but we came out the wrong end. Glanmire looked the better team for most of the game as they came at Aghada. Glanmire seem to score that bit easer as Aghada had to work hard for their scores but work they did. Glanmire opened the scoring as the teams exchanged points before Aghada hit the front for the only time on 7th minute when Aghada’s best forward Ml Russell pointed from play. The led was short lived As Glanmire added three on the trot to go two in front as we entered the second quarter. Davie Rice Added a lovely on the 17th minute but it was all Glanmire now as Aghada had to defend which they did well containing Glanmire to two points. Fleming had the last say with a placed ball to leave Aghada trailing by 7 points to 5 after playing with the wind. On resumption Aghada took the game to Glanmire but failed to score and from the brake away Glanmire punished them. By the 43m Glanmire led by 6 points with Aghada yet to requester a score. Then in a master switch like the Midleton game Eoin Healy came to mid field and the fight back started. With in five minutes Aghada had four on the trot as they piled on the pressure. Then in a mix up between the mid fielders Glanmire broke away and scored the point that won the game. By now Aghada were like a rash all over Glanmire added two more points as the match reached boiling point, but Glanmire soaked up the pressure as the seasiders were guilty for many wides 12 in all to the winners 6. well done to both teams who gave a great display of football

East Cork Under 21 A Football Championship Final

Glanmire 0-12 Aghada 0-11

In Cobh

THE Clonmult Memorial Cup will remain in Glanmire for another twelve months after the holder’s had a narrow victory over Aghada in the East Cork Under 21 A Football Championship Final yesterday evening in Cobh.
This final could have gone either way and only for a world class point blank save from the Glanmire Goalkeeper William O’Flynn in the dying seconds, the Championship would have been heading to Rostellan.
Aghada had the aid of the strong breeze in the opening half, but despite this it was Glanmire who scored immediately from the throw in when Bryan Mullins pointed from play.
From the kick out Aghada were awarded a free 21 meters out and from a sharp angle Cian Fleming levelled the game.
In a rip-roaring opening three minutes Glanmire were back in the lead this time Centre Forward Daniel Kearney was on target with a well taken score from play. It only took Aghada two minutes to level, again a free from Fleming. Aghada had the lead for the only time in this match on the seventh minute after a pointed score from Michael Russell, but the lead was short lived as Martin Crowley levelled for Glanmire three minutes later.Martin Connolly and Alan Barry added further points for Glanmire before David Rice replied for Aghada. David Crowley and Barry added two further points for Glanmire, before Fleming kicked a late first half pointed free to leave two points between the sides at the break.
Glanmire sparkled in the opening thirteen minutes of the second half with the breeze at their backs with four unanswered points, as Fintan Burke scored twice, plus Crowley and Connolly were on target.
A mountain for Aghada to climb! Yes, but Aghada love climbing mountains and back they came with four scores of their own, Fleming and Eoin Healy raising the white flag and Russell with two further points.
On the 53rd minute Glanmire’s full forward Fintan Burke fisted over his sides last score of the match, but it proved to be a crucial score in the end, because despite two more scores from Russell and a point from Fleming and a miracle save at the very end, Burke’s point would prove to be the difference between the sides at the final whistle.

Fri 16th April U21 A F semi final
Aghada 1-7 Midleton 0-8

what a game it was plenty of excitement a missed penalty, woodwork hit at both sides, a square goal and a though hard game played fairly. The magpies opened up a 4 point led before Cian Fleming pointed a placed ball 15m into the game. Then Aghada got the afore mentioned penalty but drove it wide while Midleton broke up the field and pointed. Both teams exchanged points before half time as the magpies led 7 points to 2 with Aghada guilty of many wides. On resumption the selectors made a master move bring Eoin Healy to centre field and Eoin Savage to centre back suddenly Aghada looked more balanced. We took the game to Midleton put between bad wides and good Midleton defending Aghada found it hard to close the gap. Then it all changed in a five minute spell when Aghada scored 1-2 with out reply to lead for the first time with six minutes left on the clock. In between Midleton had a goal disallowed for a square ball. Finbarr Day led the charge ably assisted by Dave Rice who had an magnificent hour. At the back captain Shane Wall led by example as the full backline put up the shutters.
But how the magpies responded and only a great save from the seasider’s cul barra saved the day. We had to endure six minutes of injury time as the 15 players defended with Day and Russell to the fore.

In Shanagarry

AGHADA booked their place in this year’s East Cork ‘Under 21’ A football final with a fantastic comeback performance in Shanagarry.
Midleton started well with an early score from a ‘45’ from Stephen Moore. Then Midleton extended their lead to four points to no-score after twelve minutes of play with scores from play from Paudie O’Shea, John Keane and Stephen Moore.
It took Aghada sixteen Minutes to raise a white flag with a pointed free from Cian Fleming.
Midleton replied with an excellent score from Keane and then a moment of drama unfolded as a foul was committed on Aghada’s Ronan Kennedy and a penalty was awarded, but Fleming blasted the ball wide and from the kick out Midleton punished Aghada with another point from Jamie O’Mahony.
Fleming made amends for the penalty miss seconds later with a great point from play for Aghada, but it was the magpies that rounded off the first half with another Keane point to lead by five points at half time.
Whatever was said to Aghada at the break really worked because Aghada dominated the second half with some excellent individual performances none more significant than that of Eoin Healy.
Fleming opened the Aghada account in the second half with a point from play just one minute in, but back came Midleton with a score from wing back Jamie O’Mahony which proved to be Midleton’s last score of this game with 25 mins still remaining.
Aghada could have pushed the self destruct button with wides mounting up, but Fleming and Finbarr Day settled the nerves with points to narrow the deficit to just two points.
Day then gave Aghada the lead for the first time with just six minutes to go with a determined strike on the ground crashed into the Midleton net.
Fleming added another point and despite some late tense minutes of Midleton pressure Aghada held on for a brilliant comeback victory.

Scorers for Aghada: C Fleming 0-5 (2f) F Day 1-1, Ronan Kennedy 0-1.

Aghada 0-15 Fr O'Neill's 3-4

For a game that Aghada dominated they had to work hard to win this one. Leaking goals and 15 wides were the stats.
Aghada had most of the play with Shane Wall outstanding at full back as was Willie O’Shea on his right. Russell opened the scoring with a point but before Aghada knew where they were O’Neill’s registered 1-1 on the 5m mark and yet they failed to even threaten up to the short whistle. Up front Aghada had three clear goal chances to no avail. Slowly the points came as man of the match Eoin Healy ruled from centre back. By the short whistle Aghada led by 6 points to 1-1.
On resumption Russell added a point before on the 35th m O’Neill’s got a carbon copy goal a long high ball into the sun with the full forward getting the touch. It was back to level pegging. Aghada got two points back in as many minutes to pull away again. Healy, Fleming, and Dave Rice were in full flow as Aghada led by 4 points as time closed out, then disaster struck the goalie failed to deal with a ball and bang only a point in it. But how Aghada responded As Healy found another gear and pointed to huge relief all round. Aghada now face Midleton next Fri night in Shanagarry at 6-45 in the semi final.
Team John O’Brien, Willie O’Shea, Shane Wall, Kennet Higgins, Conor Rice, Eoin Healy, Aidan O’Connell, Eoin Savage, Andrew O’Donoghue, James Daly, Cian Fleming, Dave Rice, Michael Russell, Finbarr Day, Ronan Kennedy sub used Seamus O’Gorman for Conor Rice 40th m
