| Aghada were well beaten in this championship match played
in Carrigtwohill. We got off to a good start with David Rice getting
the first point of the match, and we remained very competitive for the
first 20 minutes getting our only other scores of this match through
Oisin Lynch and a Derek Bowler free. In the final 10 minutes of the
half Carrig dominated scoring 3 goals which killed off any chance we
had. In the second half Carrig maintained their dominance of the match,
we emptied our bench during the second half to try and give everyone
a run. David Rice, David O Hanlon Aidan O Connell and Nigel Berry tried
to the end. Aghada team N Berry A Walsh C Rice L Morrissey K O Gorman R Goode T Hartnett A O Connell capt R Dwane D Rice A Cotter D Bowler R Savage P O Connor O Lynch subs D O Hanlon P Hynes D Kearney M O Connor B Condon W O Shea R Condon D Condon |

| Battling Midleton overcome Aghada after extra time
Aghada 3-08 Midleton 2-16 Derek Kiely evening echo In Shanagarry The last remaining third round game in the Michael O’Connor Motor Factors, East Cork Junior “A” football championship was played last night in Shanagarry where Midleton got the better of Aghada after extra time. Aghada who claimed the scalp of holders Cloyne in the opening round had a strong side out and this showed as they took an early lead with a Josh O’Shea goal, had raised another green flag just before the break when Ger Melvin punched home and struck for a third green flag in the opening minutes of the second half with Ger Melvin slotting home a penalty after O’Shea was taken down. This would have been enough to break the back of most teams but credit Midleton, they refused to lie down with the outstanding Stephen Moore answering the opening goal with one for Midleton in the 10th minute and with Declan Ryan, Aonghus Cotter, Paul Barry and Stephen Moore all pointing it looked as if Midleton would lead at half time until Ger Melvin punched home for Aghada after Eoin O’Neill’s shot was saved by stand in keeper Keith Ryan. That goal left Aghada 2-2 to 1-4 in front at the break. On the resumption Aghada were awarded a penalty, expertly converted by Melvin and with Dave Creedon adding a point the Rostellan outfit were five points to the good. Midleton who had lost centre back Eoin Walsh in the 10th minute had to replace Keith Ryan as well with Sean Hennessy taking over in goal. With Cotter and Aidan Ryan driving them forward, Stephen Moore began to make his presence felt with three fine points, while Aidan Ryan added another as the game was back in the melting pot. Aghada had moved James O’Connell to full forward and he obliged with two sweet points before Midleton drew level with a well taken goal from Killian Burke. O’Connell again shot Aghada in front with nine minutes remaining but Midleton battled back and Moore again tied the game with his 4th point of the half. Both sides had chances for victory but extra time was needed with the side’s level at 3-6 to 2-9 at full time. Aghada again struck first as Finbarr Day with his first touch scored a superb point but the Midleton reply was swift as Moore again answered the call. Aghada were to go behind for the first time as Declan Ryan pointed but Eoin O’Neill had the sides level for a fourth time. That was to be the final score for Aghada as Midleton began to find renewed effort as points from Aidan Ryan and Stephen Moore (2) saw Midleton hold a three point advantage after the first period of extra time. Midleton closed the deal in the last ten minutes Seamus O’Farrell and man of the match Stephen Moore added on points to secure Midleton’s hard earned but fully deserved passage to the quarter final where they will face Erin’s Own this coming Tuesday night. | Cloyne lose 1st championship match in 3 seasons. After a hard fought game played in ideal conditions in Cobh last night, Aghada’s second string stole this game at the death when Ger Melvin converted a penalty with four minutes left on the clock. This put Aghada ahead for the 1st time in the game by the narrowest of margins. From the kick out Melvin landed a point to go two clear with as many minutes left. But more drama was to come; Cloyne hit back with a point and won the kick out Diarmuid O’Sullivan tried a long range shot that was heading for the top left hand corner but some how the Aghada keeper Mark O’Brien got to it to put it out of a fifty. Again Sullivan tried for the equaliser only for Aghada to give away the second fifty but this time Sullivan blazed it wide. It did not always look like an Aghada win. When in a minute of the start Paudie O’Sullivan got a peach of a goal followed by a point as Aghada struggled big time. By the 12 minute Cloyne were 1-3 to a point ahead after hitting the cross bar three times. Slowly Aghada got on top especially James O’Connell at mid field. In five minute period Aghada tacked on four points before Cloyne were to score again. both teams then exchanged points before the short whistle.but it wasAghada who were Happiest just a point adrift 1-4 to 0-6 On resumption it was the same story Cloyne broke away for the opening score when Diarmuid O’Sullivan blasted to the net to restore Cloyne’s advantage. Points were exchanged before Aghada hit three in a row to bring it back to a one point game. On the 59th Minute Cloyne added another to go two clear just before the afore mentioned penalty. A great game of football played in the traditional history of both sides but while Aghada could have been lucky our bench made the difference with all subs making the differance. nothing between the sides and they could meet again before the year year is out. Thurs 18th Feb JFL Div 1 Aghada 1-6 Midleton 2-10
| Aghada started the stronger with points from John Connelly and Davie
Creedon. As the 1st quarter drew to a close the magpies went ahead when
they made every attack count. Following a home mistake Midleton made
none when they rattled Mark O’Brien’s net. Aghada fought
back and when Richie Good was brought down inside the square, Connelly
dispatched the resulting penalty to pull it back to a 3 point game as
the short whistle approached. Two quick points all but cancelled out
Connelly’s goal leaving the visitors ahead by 1-8 to 1-3 at the
brake. Scores were hard to come by on resumption as Aghada upped their game but they failed to capitalise on the possession. Scoring only 3 points in all while the Magpies added 1-2 coming mostly from brake a ways. Finbarr Day, Colm Power, Eoin Savage and Brian Wall impressed for the home side.
