U10 FOOTBALL 10

U10 and U9 Football

– Under 10 football Leagues R1 Aghada faced Fr O Neills in Aghavine and put in a good display. We had an Under 9 and an Under 10 team playing two ten aside games using the Go Games format. Despite gallant displays from both Fr O Neills teams Aghada had the better of this one. In the Under 9 game Ronan O Connell helped himself to 4 goals, whilst Ivan Perez and Diarmuid Phelan, also shone. In the Under 10 game, Craig Hogan fired over a number of excellent long range points in the first period where he was a forward – scores that players twice his age would be proud of! Liam Hennigan was excellent in the tackle throughout. Oisin Counihan teamed up very well with Michael Barry for the score of the game in the final third. A series of hand passes found the spare man eventually and breaking past his opposite number Oisin fired over a fine hook kick. Donogh Rice and Jonathon O Mahony also put over some fine scores. Man of the Match was under 9 Rory Bawden, who played on the under 10 team, showed great movement throughout the game. Mark McCarthy, Alan Hogan and Mark Stafford all shared goalkeeping duties and performed admirably also. Cian Cotter also put in a great performance in all sections of the field.
Under Ten Football
Aghada v Youghal Challenge Game
Aghada played Youghal in a challenge game on the 3rd of April at home, with two very close 9 – a - side games ensuing. Aghada succeeded in both games by the narrowest of margins. Richie Condon’s team put up a great display of attacking football with Jonathon O Mahony in great form. Ronan O Connell and Darragh Ryan were stars on the day for this team, and came away with a 1 point victory in the end. Thanks to referee Emmet Foley who put in a fine display with the whistle.
On the other field, Conor Hickeys team started off as if they were dreaming about the Easter Eggs that they would be having the following morning as Youghal raced into a 2 goal lead in the opening 2 minutes. However the ship was steadied and by picking off a number of long range points, and a few goals thrown in, the team ran out winners in the end. Best for Aghada were Luke Foley and Rory Slye at back, Mark McCarthy in Midfield (and also an excellent display In goals), Alan Hogan (who fired over some classic minors) and Sean Morrissey who showed he has equal skill at the back as he does up front. Liam Hennigan grabbed two “poachers” goals also and put in a great all round display. Thanks to referee Sean Norris who ensured that there was a good flow to the game.
Honours even against Erins Own
Aghada Under 10s were split into 3 teams for this one and it involved a lot of setting up on the day. Thanks to all parents who helped putting up the goal posts and nets etc.
On field 1 an exciting 12 a side game was played out with Daniel MCGauran, Oisin Counihan, Craig Hogan, and Mark Stafford all putting in great work. This team lost however in a hard fought game.
On field 2, Jamie O Hanlon and Rory O Connell put in very good performances, with Thomas Busteed scoring a brace of goals to help this team win over their Erins Own counterparts. Cormac O Keeffe and Daniel McDonnell also had very good games.
On field 3, Aghada were involved in a ding-dong encounter with the momentum swinging both ways up until the very end with Erins Own finally having the upper hand. Jack Norris put in a high quality performance, constantly moving, involved in defence and attack. Some great finishing helped him to a number of goals and points on the day, including a fisted point a la Mickey Linden in the early 90s. Cian Cotter and Cian O Driscoll in the backs showed great ability in tackling, shadowing and hassling without fouling. Gavin Kirrane won and laid off a number of balls in the forwards, and linked up well with Max Ahern throughout the game. Rory Bawden in goals didn’t put a foot wrong. Score of the game came from Michael Coppinger however who when playing at full forward turned over possession, from the full back, spun around in an instant and sent the football into orbit over the bar. Great stuff from the Saleen man.

Dohenys vs Aghada – U10 Football Challenge– 20/03/2010
Into the west….
On the 20th of March, Aghada under 10 footballers embarked to the West and took the long trek to Dunmanway to play Dohenys in a challenge match. Thanks to all followers who attended on the day. We split into two 12-a-side teams: an Under 10 team (who had a couple of under 9’s join in with them for the match) and a team of Under 9’s.
The under 10s had a great win, winning by 5 points in a gripping encounter. Stars on the day were the Captain Hennigan, the Hogan twins, Rory Slye at the back and Jack Norris in Midfield. This was a real team display with the rest of the team all putting in stellar performances.
The Under 9’s played a team that consisted mainly of Under 10 players and put up a great performance losing narrowly on a scoreline of 2-4 to 5-6.
Ciaran O Driscoll led from the front ensuring the Dohenys backs did not have an easy time coming out of defence. Ivan Surname showed great adaptability playing in all positions of the field, and one of the highlights of the game was a great catch by Ivan from a high lobbing ball deep in our defence in the second half. Thomas Busteed and Darragh Ryan shared goalkeeping duties during the game and pulled off some very good saves throughout, coupled with accurate kickouts. Jamie O Hanlon and Rory O Connell showed they were at home both in defence and attack putting some fine scores over the bar as well as some hard tackling when they played in the backs. Gavin Kirrane was a rock in defence, out in front of his man for most balls that came his way, and Rory Bawden had an all action game in midfield. Max Aherne had an outstanding game dancing his way through the tackles of much bigger players with ease and aplomb. Max also showed great leadership encouraging his teammates throughout the game.
Man of the match was the captain Dylan Buckley who put in a phenomenal amount of work in midfield, pushing himself on, showing great skill and giving 100%.
Michael Coppinger and Ronan O Connell up front caused problems for the Dohenys defence, Ronan winning us a penalty in the second half.
Aghada vs Eire Og – U10 Football Challenge– 20/03/2010
Aghada succeed on the Astroturf….
Eire Og welcomed Aghada to their Astroturf facilities in Ovens on the 27th of March and a very entertaining game ensued. We played a different type of game to usual whereby points were worth 3 points and goals were worth 1 point. This led to the rather odd scoreline of Aghada 25 points, Eire Og 22 points.
Stars on the day for Aghada were Darragh Ryan who was composed and effective at full back, Ronan O Connell who got 2 great points in the second half of the game, Jamie O Hanlon who was excellent in the backs and the forwards, and Michael Barry in goals. Mark Stafford also was excellent at centre back stopping most Eire Og attacks on our 45 metre line. Ciaran O Driscoll, Gavin Kirrane and Craig Hogan also had very good games. Again like the week before the lads all gave 100% and can each and every one of them be proud of a hard morning’s work.
