Sat 26th Sept U12 B Hurling County final

Aghada 1-8 Bishopstown 0-2

What a day for Aghada back to back county hurling titles and done in style.
This was a fine a game as you will ever see while the scoreline says Aghada won handy nothing could be further from the truth. Bishopstown threw everything at Aghada only to be repealed time after time.
But I could have been so different. If Jack Farmer hadn’t played a captain’s part when he brought off two great saves as the City boys applied the pressure. The opening Quarter was nib and tuck with both sets of backs and goalkeepers well on top. Slowly the East Cork champions got on top with John Looney’s long range frees telling. Aghada had a vice like grip at centre field where Mark Healy and Hanna Looney ruled the roust. While the Aghada forwards threatened they found it hard to find the room despite some outstanding displays. At the short whistle Aghada had a slender lead of 4 points to 1 after playing with the slight wind. On resumption Aghada upped the ante and when a long ball by Kevin O Hanlon found Charlie Terry he made no mistake and rattler the net. Aghada were now in the driving seat but the Bishopstown defence stood firm especially Eoin Murphy and their captain Sean O’Rourke. As we entered the 4th Quarter the city boys threw everything at Aghada but the Aghada full backline stood firm with outstanding displays from all. John Looney was also outstanding at centre back clearing ball after ball either on the ground or in the air. Up front Aghada keep up the pressure with the odd point putting the game beyond the city lads. As the tempo rose so did the Aghada boys, the introduction of Steven O’Halloran and Matthew Leahy added to the cause as Aghada ran winners by 1-8 to 2 points Aghada had ever thing heart, determination and no little skill ( I counted four block downs in a row) and were a credit to their club and Division

Aghada won the county final in Caherlag on Saturday with a fine performance against Bishopstown. There is no doubt but that these players have come through a very tough campaign and overcame some very tough games.

Route to the Final

Our first game was against Sars in Rostellan and our character showed strongly to see us through but our second game with Russell Rovers provided one of the great occasions of the year. We shaded it and went onto an East Cork Final against Watergrasshill in Midleton. We were poor for long periods in this game and only our determination not to be beaten won it for us. Ballyhea lay in wait for us and this time we clicked into gear to win comfortably, setting up another battle with the Hill in Carrig na bhFear. This was another great game where we overcame not only a great display from the Hill but also a serious injury to our captain Jack Farmer. Aaron Berry took over in goal and was a hero on the day. The game went to extra time and we emerged as winners again to set up a final against Bishopstown.

Bishopstown

We started well and points from John Looney (3), and Kevin O Hanlon put us 3 points ahead at the break. It was a tough game in the first half and our six backs came under severe pressure with great performances from Edward Leahy and Matthew Kidney as well as John Looney and Jack MacDonald , who was brilliant throughout the game.

We got the perfect start to the second half when Charlie Terry netted our only goal but Bishopstown were still in contention despite only scoring one point. Jack Farmer in goal pulled off a few vital stops while Cian Savage and Jordan Tynan really came into it Still, we began to stretch away and further scores from John Looney and Charlie Terry put us out of sight as Bishopstown scored another point. Credit here must go to Mark Healy and Hannah Looney in the midfield engine room. They really stood up to be counted when it mattered It was a game that was never fully comfortable for us and we came under pressure throughout the game. The forwards worked very hard with Kaelin O Donoghue very strong as well as Kevin O Hanlon saving his best performance for the final. On that note, players such as Aaron Berry and Aaron Butler battled hard while Daniel Creedon was always a threat on the forty and did some very valuable work to stop the Bishopstown half back line clicking into gear

At the final whistle we were County Champions and in fairness it was no more than this particular group of players deserved. They are a credit to their parents, mentors and club and can fully feel proud of their county medals..

Saturday 26th September all Aghada Juvenile club and supporters travelled to Caherlag to see & contest the County under 12 B hurling final. The opponents this year was Bishopstown. In the run-up to the Final the Aghada team had to travel to north cork and overcome a combination of liscarroll/ballyhea,and in the County Semi Final met their east cork finalists Watergrashill, again! The latter was a close affair with just 2 points separating them, after extra time. The county final is always a momentous occasion & Aghada parish was decked in the green & white with several signs wishing the team well. The Team was primed well & psychologically well motivated by an expert management team of Joe Terry,Martin Looney, Philip Kidney, lead by Manager Kevin Foley.

The team started well by a point from John Looney, but, Bishopstown responded by another point. The first half was a close affair and ended 4 points for Aghada to Bishopstown's 1 point. The first half was keenly contested and the score could have been allot more, but for the great goalkeeping by the Bishopstown goalie Ian McCarthy, saving a rasper of a shot from Charlie Terry in the 29th minute. The second half saw Aghada up the pressure & in the 3rd minute of the half Charlie got his goal. From that moment onwards the Aghada hurlers got a grip of the game. The hooking, blocking, fair tackling, sliotar striking was of a top standard by both teams. The differance between the two team was in the the centre field & half forward line that helped to gain possession. Hannah Looney & Mark Healy were everywhere;Mark was in every cluster & won possession most of the time,Hannah is an up & coming camogie star.Kevin O'Hanlon(0-1) was fast & nippy,Danial Creedan(0-1f) & Kalen O'Donaghue played superbly. The full back line of Edward Leahy,Cian Savage & Jordan Tynan made it very easy for goalie & captain Jack Farmer, who was never really threatened. The half-back line dominated by Mathew Kidney,Jack McDonald & the fine centre back John Looney(0-5,2F);his contribution of skill & scores is an asset to any team. Finally the full-forward line of Aaron Berry,Charlie Terry(1-1) and Aaron Butler received great ball, and this was capitalised on, which in the end won it for Aghada. The under 12 hurlers are a panel of 28 players. There were 4 substitutes used Kevin O Halloran,he slotted into the full forward line and made a good contribution as did Paul Daly,Mathew Leahy and Luke O'Connell.By the time the 5th sub Declan Foley was ready to come in ,the Kerry referee Stephen Murphy had blown up full time.Captain Jack Farmer's accepted the trophy and in his fine speech he thanked everyone and mentioned his mentors for 'putting up with them during the year' .And surely with a county final win under their belt Kevin Foley & his selectors were thoroughly delighted to follow on from the success of 2008.A great year for them and the future of hurling in Aghada-well done to all concerned.Afterwards the successful team paraded the parish of Aghada and ended up in Rostellan for refreshments.

Sat 19th Sept U12 Hurling County semi final
Aghada 4-9 Watergrasshill 4-7 after extra time

The under 12 hurlers secured a place in next Saturday’s County Final with another heart stopper against the Hill. We knew the Hill would be out for revenge after a narrow defeat in Midleton in the East Cork Final and we were also missing Daniel Creedon. Jack Farmer got a serious injury halfway through and we were under severe pressure.

The spirit these players have has been proven time and again and with Aaron Berry performing heroics having taken over in goal, we shored up and held on a after a poor enough start. The game finished all square after normal time and into extra time we went again. The Hill scored four – nine and really tested us but goals from John Looney, Steven O Halloran, Charlie Terry and Kevin O Hanlon over the eighty minutes sealed our final place.

The Hill were again genuinely unlucky and we know we have been pushed all the way.

A special word of thanks to the incredible support we got from everyone in the club. These players know they have the encouragement of everyone. Also a ‘thank you’ goes to John Hayes and his team in Carrignavar who made both sides feel welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for them and we appreciate the efforts they made with the facilities.

Next game – County Final v Bishopstown in Caherlag on Saturday at 2pm.

Sat 12th Sept U12 Hurling 1st round County

Aghada 6-11 Ballyhea 1-4

The under 12s came through a tough game in Ballyhea on Saturday to seal a semi-final place against Watergrasshill next weekend. We got off to a flier in the first half and goals from Charlie Terry (2), Aaron Butler and Kaelin O Donoghue made sure we had a commanding lead of 4-4 to 1-1 at the break. Another goal each from Aaron and Charlie as well as a number of good points made sure of the win. Substitutions were made and players like Paul Daly, Declan Foley and Luke O Connell, who train as hard as the first fifteen, got on the field.
In the end a convincing win and now we meet the Hill again at the weekend.
A special word of thanks to the Ballyhea club who treated us very well and also to our great support from parents and club.

Mon 7th Sept U12 B hurling championship Final

Aghada 1-17 Watergrasshill 2-13

The under 12 hurlers clinched back to back East Cork’s in a very tight game in Midleton on Monday night last. The Hill put us under the cosh from the start and we really did not get into gear at all in the first half but at half time we were still in contention but six points down. We were greatly helped by an Aaron Berry goal. After a half time reminder we upped our game into the second half and clawed our way back into it. John Looney again kept us in the game with great accuracy from distance and close in. We were greatly helped by heroic performances by Jordan Tynan, in particular and Kaelin O Donoghue, while Cian Savage, Hannah Looney, Charlie Terry and Edward Leahy kept us going when the going got tough.
Overall then, this was a huge achievement from a highly committed group of players whose heart is never in doubt. In truth, we were not at our best and the Hill were very good but we were very proud in our achievement and as always a huge thanks to all our supporters, both within the club, not to mention the ever supportive parents.

Next game: Versus Ballyhea in Ballyhea , Saturday 12th September at 5.00

Friday 28th Aug U12 hurling championship

Aghada 0-17 Russell Rovers 2-10

The under 12s secured an East Cork final berth edging a titanic battle with Shanagarry by one point after extra-time.
It was a genuinely epic game and scores were matched from the throw-in. The atmosphere from the crowd urged on the players to a huge performance and every Aghada player played his part. No one ever doubts the commitment of this panel, including subs, who are pushing the first fifteen all the way, but the heart that these players show is a credit and an example to all.
In the first half there was nothing between the sides. We did not really perform to our best and went in 2 points down at 1-4 to 0-5. We had not fired up but the second half was a different story. We caught fire and lifted our game as did Rovers. At the whistle Rovers had 1-8 on the board to our 0-11.
Into extra time and Rovers put another goal and a point on the board, leaving us four points adrift. The spirit and heart in the panel took over and we kept clawing the points back until John Looney put us ahead into the last minute of extra time.
At the final whistle we had edged it, as Rovers had done a few times to us, and now it’s on to an East Cork final in Rathcormack on Wednesday night against Watergrasshill.
It would be unfair to single out a few players for special mention but, as usual, our thanks go the parents and club for their constant support.

Wed 26th Aug U12 ‘B’ Hurling Championship
Aghada 7-9 Sars 2-4

A big result matched by a big performance here. Sars have really put it up to us in recent games and beat us heavily in the ‘A’ league game in Glanmire.
Tonight, we played very well after an early setback of conceding a goal.
We fought back to go in 3-6 to 1-3 at half time, the goals coming from Aaron Berry, Charlie Terry and Mark Healy.
The expected Sars fight-back started on the second half whistle but further goals from Aaron Berry, Kevin O Hanlon and Charlie Terry (2) secured the game
Our next game is Russell Rovers in Rostellan on Friday 28th at 6.45

U12 Hurling 09

The year so far:
At the start of the year we were chosen to play ‘A’ grade in the League and ‘B’ Grade in Championship.

The League:
We were in a group with Fr O Neills, Sars, Midleton, Watergrasshill and Killeagh

First up was Fr O Neills in May and we were competitive for a long part of the game. They eventually pulled away towards the end but it was a good start for us.

We then took on Midleton in Rostellan and we shaded a great game to register our first points but Sars in Glanmire was a very different story. We never got going and they hit us with everything. To say they won comfortably would be an understatement.

It was hard to pick ourselves up after that game but while we lost against Killeagh in Rostellan, the performance was much better and the game was very close.

We finished with a win against Watergrasshill at home and the team put in a great performance.

So, overall an encouraging League campaign against, at times, much stronger sides. As usual the lads were a credit to everyone and the experience will stand to us in the future.

Willie Ryan Competetition
25th of July 2009

With a few of the panel that were victorious last year and a tough League campaign behind us, we settled into a huge effort on a great day in Rostellan.

Game 1: Bride Rovers.
A tough start to the day, Bride really put it up to us but good displays from John Looney, Kevin O Hanlon and Kaelin O Donoghue rounded off a fine team effort and we sealed a 0-6 to 0-2 win

Game 2: Castlelyons
We hit form here and the forwards really got their game in gear. Charlie Terry and Aaron Butler as well as Daniel Creedon showed us the way and we pulled off a 3-4 to 2-1 win. In this game the whole panel were played and everyone performed well.

Game 3: Youghal
By now we were motoring well and we won by 2-6 to 1-0. This scoreline flattered us a bit and the backs did fine work to keep us on track. Ed Leahy, Luke O Connell and Cian Savage were the pick, while Charlie Terry, Aaron Butler and Matthew Leahy did well up front.

Semi Final: Sars
Pound for pound the hardest game we had and our best performance. We won in the end of a low scoring game by 0-3 to 0-1, but the scoreline doesn’t tell the story. This was a great game with nothing left behind on the pitch at the end. John Looney with two points and Aaron Butler with one sealed the win but without Jack Farmer, our inspirational captain, in goal we would not have reached the final. Everyone was exceptional here from Jack in goal to the last man on the pitch.

Final: Russell Rovers
You could only describe the effort here as heroic. Following five hard-fought games and trips to and from the dressing room, Russell Rovers waited for us in the final. It was a titanic battle with points scored and answered again and again. All level at the final whistle, Rovers edged us out in extra time winning by 0-9 to 0-6. All in all, we were disappointed to lose but we really could not have asked for more from the panel over six hours.
The players did everybody proud, with Cian Savage, John Looney and Charlie Terry impressive especially in the final. A special word must go to Jack Farmer, who captained the squad for the day. He never let the heads drop and kept everyone on their toes all day with great humour and genuine team building craic.
Thanks also to all the support given to the team from Pat, Robin, all the parents for their patience and to the kitchen army!!
