| On Monday 17th, Castlemartyr GAA superbly hosted the East Cork under
12 A grade football between near neighbours Aghada & Midleton.
The match was well refereed & controlled by Eoin McGovern &
his umpires. The windy evening aided Aghada in the first half. But,
this half was a frustrating time for the Aghada forwards with the
football striking the cross-bar and a lot of near misses. The lucky
team at half-time were Midleton, who surely felt relieved down just
2 points on a score of 1-1 to Aghada’s 6 points and with the
wind behind them in the second half, they had a right to be optimistic.
However, as they say this was a story of two halves? Aghada stepped
up their game in the second half, against the wind and played absolutely
impressive football. The stout and firm full back defence of Aaron
Butler, Daniel Creedon and Edward Leahy, worked well together to rebel
the magpies attack .Also a few superb saves by Cian O Driscoll in
goal, lifted the team, especially when the Midleton penalty was driven
wide. In the half back line Kalen O Donoghue, Aaron Berry with Captain
Mark Healy made several solo runs into the forward line. Midfield
of Cian Savage and John Looney(0-2) were everywhere and worked well
with Jack McDonnell, Stephen O Halloran(0-1) and Charlie Terry(1-1).The
Aghada forwards were aggressive & hungry for the ball all the
time and this kept the play in the Midleton half for most of the second
half. The full forward line of Jack Farmer (0-3), Paul Daly, and Kevin
O Hanlon (1-3) worked hard and the two corner forwards patrolled the
side lines which fed in great ball on the Midleton defence. With the
oppositions first & only score of a point in the 27th minute of
the second half, Aghada’s job was complete. Everyone was very
impressed with this second half display and some of the pundits were
figuring whether this team were as good as last year’s team....
time will tell. From Aghada Juvenile Club perspective this is the
first time that an Aghada team have won back to back Imokilly A grade
football titles, and, this all goes well for football in Rostellan.
We wish this team well in the county campaign where we will meet at
home the runners up of the Carbery division either Clonakilty or Bandon,
to be played this weekend of next weekend. We thank the parents of
the team for hosting a food & beverage reception in the club afterwards
for the victorious team. Tribute must be paid to the team manager
Martin Looney and mentors, Aiden Berry, Paul O Donoghue, Aiden Cody,
Kevin O Connell, and Mark Crowley .The team were also helped by Paul
Kilbane in training. Under 12 Football panel-Cian O Driscoll, Aaron
