Aghada 1-4 Clonakillty 1-14

Senior Football Championship Replay– Aghada 1-4 Clonakilty 1-14
Aghada bowed out of this years Championship after a very disappointing performance against Clonakilty on Sunday last in Pairc Ui Rinn. It All started so well after conceding an early free we went down the other end and Trevor O keeffe slotted over a good point quickly followed by a good move involving Trigger and Cian Fleming that set up Pearse O Neill for a cracking goal. Truth be told that was as good as it got. Clonakilty got back into the game mainly through frees some of which were dubious to say the least. At this stage Aghada were struggling to get to grips with the game and any chances that were created our finishing was at best terrible. 4 very bad wides and a couple of balls off the posts had us on the back foot. With the scores at 1-1 to 0-5 with 5 mins to go to half time we handed them a goal whewn the on rushing forward slotted home to an empty net. This really seems to knock the wind out of us and another point from yet another free before half time left the score at 1-6 to 1-1 in favour of our opponents.
Aghada needed to make a bright start in the second half but this never arrived. Instead it was Clon who took complete control and started to throw over some nice points to stretch the lead even further. It was the 45th minute before we registered another score from a Stephen O Keeffe free which meant at that stage it was our first score in 40 minutes. Clon then upped the gears again and every time they went forward they looked like scoring whereas every time we went forward it was a struggle to make any kind of head way. A free from Stevie and a point from play from Ger Hurley were the only other times we managed to make the score board man do any bit of work and Clon ran out very comfortable winners by 10 points in the end.

Fri 19th June Evening Echo Senior football Championship

Aghada 0-14 Clonakillty 2- 8

A game that could have gone anyway but what heart Aghada showed going two goals behind at stages and coming back to lead as time ran down. We started the better with 3 points on the board before Clon knew where they were. Fleming scoring two while evergreen Dave Creedon kicked a sublime point. Back came the men from the west with 4 unanswered points before Trigger replied to level the game. Then on the 15th minute disaster struck when Clon rattled the net. A minute later Melvin replied with a mighty point. Clon hit back to go three in front before Aghada hit three in a row to level the game as the small whistle approached. But the men from the west had the last say with a minor to lead 1-6 to 0-8.
On resumption Aghada made two changes Tom O’Neill came on for Ronan Dwane and Ger Hurley for Ger Melvin. Now Pearse thundered into the game as he settled into centre forward. Brother Tom hit a great point to put his mark on the game. Aghada started to move better now and the team seemed better balanced. Then we leaked another goal. Now with a mountain to climb Aghada started about their business. Our defence by now were on top lead by Kieran O’Connor (who gave his finest hour in an Aghada shirt) and it showed up front. Points by the outstanding midfielder Eoin Healy, Trigger, and two from Steve O’ Keeffe had the Aghada back in the game. Then on the 57th minute Fleming put us ahead for the 1st time since the 10 minute Aghada looked to be there but a turn over gave the west cork men a chance of a point and they took it.

Fri 22nd May SFL – Aghada 1-12 St. Vincent’s 1-9

Aghada continued their fine form in football with a 3 point win over our city rivals in Rostellan last Friday night. Missing some regulars we started well and were soon on top with some fine scores from play. With the returning JP O Connor in top form at full back and leading the defence things were looking good for us. A goal of the year contender from the evergreen Davy Creedon gave us a 6 point lead at half time. The second half was a tighter affair with Vincent's coming more into the game and getting some fine scores themself's. A deflected shot left stand in keeper Michael Russell stranded and cut the lead to 2 points. A fine point from Mark Lewis and a free from Cian Fleming gave us a bit of breathing space and we managed to hang on by 3 points in the end. All and all considering the players we were missing this was a very good result for the lads.

Sat 18th April Aghada 1-8 O'Donovan Rossa 0-8

Aghada opened in whirl wind fashion, with both cork players minor and senior ruling the roost at centre field. Pearse and Owen Healy were well on top which resulted in Aghada scoring 1-4 by the end of 1st quarter. This was champagne football as our lads ran the Skibb boys off the field. Aghada passed and moved the ball at pace with the long kicks finding Trigger and Fleming at will. Then it all stopped as finally Rossa’s found their feet and started to crowd Aghada who by now were guilty of over carrying. The second quarter was played on the back foot but Rossa’s could only score 2 minors as Ronan Power, Banna and Crowley covered mighty ground. Our earlier points from Melvin, Fleming, Pearse followed by Triggers goal and a point saw Aghada go into the brake 1-4 to 0-2 to the good.
From the throw in the West cork side pointed, this was followed by one from Melvin. Rossa’s added two more to leave the game in the balance by the 36th m slowly Aghada got to grips with the game again with Kieran O’Connor going back into the corner and Shane Wall going half back and our 3rd minor taking to the field (and what a great impression Michael Russell made). A point from Trigger settled the nerves on the 42nd m. Fleming followed with one five minutes later as Aghada restored the 4 point lead. Trigger scored an unbelievable free form all of forty yards out on the sideline with seven minutes remaining Aghada looked home and dry. To the west corks men’s credit they came back at Aghada putting to minors on the board but try as they might the goal that they were after never looked like coming. The interdiction of Ronan Dwane on the 44th minute had a calming effect on the team and he marshalled affairs to the end.
In a team sprinkled with youth and experience it had a very balanced look about it. Indeed a blast for the past Davie Creedon accounted for himself well. As did the Minors Russell, Healy and O’Donoghue.

Sun 29th March Senior F L Aghada 0-6 Naomh Abhan 2-8

Aghada fielding just 3 senior players ran out of steam as the west cork men recorded their 1st win.
Aghada were well in the game but with five minutes left a bad back pass found its way into the Aghada net. Naomh Abán added to more minors to add to the home side woes. Up to them evergreen Mark Lewis kept Aghada in the contest with some nice frees as did Trevor O’Keeffe with long range points.

Sun 8th Mar Senior football league Aghada 5-7 Bishopstown 0-8

In Div 2, Aghada, with goals from Eoin Healy, Cian Fleming, Trevor O’Keeffe, Colm Power and John O’Connor powered their way to a resounding 5-7 to 0-9 victory over Bishopstown.
Two strikes from Healy and Fleming left it 2-4 to 0-7 at the break in Aghada’s favour and although Bishopstown strove gallantly to get into the game there was no stopping a rampant East Cork side.
