Fri 24th July Ulster Bank Premier 2 Hurling Championship replay
Aghada 0-9 Donoughmore 1-13

A strong second half performance gave Donoughmore the honours over Aghada in this Ulster Bank Co Premier 2 Minor Hurling Championship replay which was played in Mayfield.
Although not reaching the heady heights of the drawn game this encounter still provided an abundance of fine hurling with both sides going head to head from the off but in the final twenty minutes Donoughmore found another gear which aided them to advance to the Qtr/Final and a meeting with Fr O’Neills.
Aghada who had to line out without one of their stars of the drawn game, Michael Russell, opened on a positive note with an early pointed free from Seamus O’Gorman. Phillip O’Callaghan equalised for Donoughmore only to see Aghada edged in front with a fine point from William Leahy in the 9th minute. Donoughmore answered the call with points from Colm O’Callaghan (free) and Stephen O’Connor only to see the sides again on level terms as the game entered its second quarter after Timmy Hartnett sent a sweet shot between the posts. As both sides fought for supremacy Donoughmore took the initiative courtesy of a brace of pointed frees from their top scorer Colm O’Callaghan. After an exchange of points between Ronan Kennedy and Stephen O’Connor Aghada with Andrew O’Donoghue, Seamus O’Gorman, Eoin Savage, Kenneth Higgins, Eoin Healy, Ronan Kennedy and William Leahy to the fore began to find their feet and with two points from placed balls by O’Gorman and one from play by Kennedy they went in at the break leading by the bare minimum 0-07 to 0-06.
On the resumption the sides were level for the fifth time when Colm O’Callaghan had the opening point of the second half. Higgins responded with a well executed point for the “East-Cork” side to regain the lead. Donoughmore then began to up their game and starting with the equalising point from Leon Cogan they sent out a strong signal of intent. Two points from O’Callaghan, one from a placed ball and the second from play, gave them the advantage but Aghada hit back with a pointed free from O’Gorman to reduce the margin to a single point as the game reached the three-quarter stage and now one was beginning to think that extra-time might again be brought into the frame. However Donoughmore had other ideas as they began to take control in vital sectors. Diarmuid Healy made a number of telling saves in goal while in tight marking defence Kevin Horgan, Darren Barrett and Alan Twomey led by example and never gave their opponents enough room for a clear shot at goal. Midfielders Tadhg Hartnett and Stephen O’Connor began to get on top while up front Colm O’Callaghan, Phillip O’Callaghan, Leon Cogan and Shane Healy were looking very lively. A brace of points from Colm O’Callaghan (frees) saw Donoughmore increase their advantage and in the 50th minute they made the breakthrough when Healy found Phillip O’Callaghan and with a powerful drive he rattled the net to increase the margin to six points. Although in fairness to Aghada they battled hard to get back into contention but the goal they needed never materialised as they could not break through an unyielding Donoughmore defence and with a well taken point from Colm O’Callaghan after he was sat up by Healy the “Mid-Cork” side advanced on the final scoreline of 1-13 to 0-09.

Tue 21st July Ulster Bank Premier 2 Hurling Championship
Aghada 4-18 Donoughmore 3-21 a.e.t

It was like old times. A team that never gave up fought and won more battles when all was lost. U12 against St. Catherine’s 6 points down and as many minutes left in the 1st round of East Cork. Drew the game won the replay and went all the way to a county final only to lose in a replay. Up A at u14 what a match against Carrigtwohill in the Feile and so on. The 1st half was tame enough as we found it hard to score Healy rattled the net to lead after 4 minutes but we had to wait till the 19th m to score again when Healy popped over a point. In between Doughmore’s full forward gave an exhibition of free taking that Ben O’ Connor would be proud of. One from all of 80 yards two 65th left and right of the field, 5 in total. Indeed he was to score 1-6 out of Doughmore’s 1-8 up to half time. Aghada struggled to stay in touch. A fine William Leahy point brought it back to a two point game but then a free and on the 31st minute came the afore mentioned goal that should have rattled Aghada who went in at the short whistle down 1-8 to 1-2.
On resumption the game exploded as Aghada hit 3 points in as many minutes game on. Doughmore came back and by the 14th m were again in control 2-11 to 1-8. They we had a bit of luck when a shot from sub Raymond Savage found the net from long range. A point from Gerard O’Brien and we were back to 2. Doughmore added two as Gerard O’Brien put over his second from the puck Ronan Kennedy rattled the net to level matters on the 59th m. not to be out done Doughmore hit the front only for Russell to earn extra time with a mighty placed ball on the 62nd m. final score 3-11 to 2-14
So on to extra time and by now the hurling was fast and furious Russell again pointed to answer a Doughmore one. On the 3rd m Russell placed ball hit the upright and the alert Leahy made no mistake. What excitement as we hit the front running. Two more points from Russell and one from Kennedy had Aghada 4-15 to 2-18 ahead at the brake.
On resumption it was score for score as Aghada kept a 4 point advantage then came the goal, back to a one point game. Doughmore then got a free on the 65 and fair play to the full forward he made no mistake and its back again next Friday but what a hurling game as both teams gave of their all. Final score 4-18 to 3-21

Aghada 4-17 Donoughmore 3-20 (After extra-time)

Draw is the fairest result in cracking tie

ANYONE would find it hard to put appropriate words togeth¬er to describe how good this Ulster Bank Premier Minor 2 second round hurling clash really was as Aghada and Donoughmore could not be separated at Mayfield last night.
They say that sport can some times be cruel but on this occasion the result was justified for sheer grit and de¬termination shown by both teams in 80 minutes of gripping hurling.
The opening half began sluggishly as Aghada were committing silly fouls that allowed Colm O’Cal1ahan to punish them at will.
Donoughmore, after taking an early lead, were stunned when Eoin Healy waltzed through their defence to drill the ball past the bewildered keeper.
The game still hung in the balance entering the final minute but once again O’Callaghan was on hand to fire an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net.
Leading 1-8 to 1-2 at the interval, Donoughmore looked comfortable but Aghada, inspired by Michael Russell and Healy, struck over six points in the opening seven minutes.
Donoughmore substitute Gearóid O’Rourke was on hand to raise their second green flag in the 45th minute but two minutes later Aghada struck back with a fortuitous goal.
The Donoughmore keeper should have dealt with a high ball by Roy Savage but the ball pounced off his hand and trickled over the line.
The closing minutes were frantic and a late Ronan Kennedy goal en¬sured that Aghada were guaranteed extra time as the sides finished level in normal time 3-11 to 2-14.
The east Cork side looked likely winners in extra-time and when Willi¬am Leahy billowed the back of the net in the 64th minute they surged into a three-point lead.
With Aghada staring at a win there was one more twist in this epic clash three minutes from the end when sub¬stitute Paddy Murphy drilled the ball past the Donoughmore defence to the corner of the net.
It was fitting that Donoughmore’s Colm O’Callaghan (1-15) leveled the game in added time when he struck a 50-yard free straight between the posts.
If the drawn game is anything to go by, the replay should not be missed.
Donoughmore: C O’Callaghan 1-15 (0-8 free,2x65), G O’Rourke 1-0, P Crowley 1-0, S O’Con¬nor 0-2, S Healy 0-1.

Aghada 1-9 Newtownshandrum 3-14

The score don’t reflect the game as Aghada gave as much as the got but the north cork bys got the goals when it counted. Aghada started the better with Michael Russell leading the charge with 2 points one for a 65. Then Michael Desmond hit a fantastic ground shot to rattle the net on the 7th minute Aghada were away. Shandrum hit back with two points but the Aghada half back line of Seamus O’Gormain, Eoin Savage, and Georgio Corigliano were playing out of their skin. Then on the 15th minute Shandrum won a semi penalty which was duly dispatched to leave the score level. Russell added three points by more importantly the north cork men added six to leave the score at the short whistle 1-9 to 1-6. On resumption Shandrum added two more points before Dave Rice and Russell replied two more points followed from Shandrum before their second goal went in against the run of play. Russell hit back with 2 more frees and then Aghada lost Tommy Dobbyn to a red card and the writing was on the wall. Aghada now went for goals and paid the price when a brake away ball found its way to the Aghada net. At the death Raymond Savage gaoled and it was no more then the dissevered. Aghada tried very hard but despite mighty hurling from them and especially Kenneth Higgins it’s a second round date in July we are facing.

Mon 20th April Premier 2 Minor hurling Aghada 2-7 Brian Dillons 1-16

Fri 20th Mar Permier 2 M H L Aghada 1-8 St Catherines 1-9

League a point four minutes from time from Brian Mulcahy gave St Catherines victory over Aghada by the bare minimum in this most entertaining contest which was played in Ballynoe on Friday night last. In what a close encounter throughout in which the sides were level on six occasions they home side opened the scoring with a point from Stephen O’Brien. Michael Russell equalised for Aghada and with Brian Mulcahy (two), O’Brien and Denis Lane trading points with Giorgio Corrigliano, Tommy Dobbins and Eoin Healy the sides were still on level term at 0-05 apiece with half time approaching but a point from Daniel Mangan saw St Catherines go in at the break leading 0-06 to 0-05. Aghada who had impressive displays from Eoin Healy, Michael Russell, Tommy Dobbins, Giorgio Corrigliano and Padraig Mulry came out in a more determined mood on the resumption. A goal and a point from Healy saw them take the lead and although Stephen O’Brien replied with a point for the home side the visitors increased their advantage with points from Cian Cashman and Michael Russell to lead 1-08 to 0-07 at the three-quarter stage. On seeing the game slipping away from them St Catherines upped their performance and with Brian Mulcahy, Stephen O’Brien, Conor Hegarty and Patrick Roche coming more into the fray they began to take the game to their opponents. A point from James Neville heralded their comeback and in the 48th minute they gained equality with a super goal from Mulcahy. As both sides vied for the lead the honour fell to St Catherines with another superb point from Mulcahy to see his side take the lead and although Aghada tried their utmost this was not to be their night as the home side held out for a narrow 1-09 to 1-08 victory.
