Mon 26th Ulster Bank Co Premier 2 Minor Football League – Group 1

Aghada 1-2 Carbery Rngs 0-11

Tues 11th August Ulster Bank Premier 2 Football Championship (Round 3)

Millstreet 3-12 Aghada 2-9

Aghada bowed out of the Minor championship after a late come back in Mourne Abbey.
Fielding without Ml Russell due to injury, while Denis Healy played but was only a shadow of himself due to illness and failed to finish the game was to high a handicap for this team. Millstreet turned on the power to lead at the short whistle by 2-7 to 1-3 it was a big hill to climb. To top it all on resumption Millstreet got a soft goal. Despite this Aghada fought their way back to 4 points by the 59th m with Russell scoring 1-3 having come on as a sub. Millstreet them tacked on to points in injure time to seal the victory. Fair play to our lads they never gave up a pity the game came to soon for us.

Sun 5th April Ulster Bank Premier 2 County Minor Football Championship

Aghada 0-13 Fr. O'Neill's 1-9

Aghada had a narrow but dissevered win over Fr. O’Neill’s

This was not for the faint hearted as Aghada only hit the front with3 minutes remaining when Tommy Dobbin landed a minor. O’Neil’s lead all the way and it was rough justice on them.
Eoin Healy had a towering display in the middle of the park and it was he who started the second half revival.
For the 1st ten minutes of the game, it was tit for tat with Michael Desmond and Michael Russell (0-2) replying to O’Neil’s 3 points. Then on the 12th m O’Neill’s hit the net with a shot that Raymond Savage could do nothing about. Yet within 4 minutes Aghada were level as Aghada scored 3 points in as many minutes. Two more points were exchanged before O’Neill’s in their best spell rattled over 4 points to leave them ahead at the short whistle 1-8 to 7 points.
On resumption Russell opened the scoring from a placed ball. O’Neill’s replied start away. But little did we think that this was to be their only score in this half. Mid way through the half Aghada landed 3 points in as many minutes to be only one behind. One a mighty effort from Healy and two placed balls from Ronan Kennedy who had taking over the kicking duties. Now the game got very tight as O’Neill’s used a blanket defence to good effect. Aghada had only themselves to blame as we missed a number of easy frees and gave more away for retaliation when we were in good positions. With five minutes still left on the clock Davie Rice pointed to load cheers from the Aghada continent to draw level for the sixth time. Two minutes later up stepped the afore mentioned Dobbin to put Aghada into the 3 round.

Evening Echo report

Aghada 0-13 Fr O’Neills 1-09

A late point from Tommy Dobbyn saw Aghada overcome the strong challenge of Fr O’Neills by the bare minimum in this Ulster Bank Co Premier 2 Minor Football Championship first round game which was played in Castlemartyr on Sunday afternoon last.
In what was always a close and entertaining contest Fr O’Neills played with wind advantage in the opening half and were quickly off the mark with an early point from Fergal Duffy. A well-worked point from Michael Desmond equalised for Aghada before Gavin Foley regained the lead for Fr O’Neills with a sublime point from a sideline in the 6th minute. Aghada responded with a pointed free for Aghada and with an exchange of points between Foley and Russell the sides were still deadlocked six minutes later. A minute later Fr O’Neills received a major boost when a low shot drive from Foley from inside the 20 metre line found the corner of the net but it was their opponents who reacted in a positive manner. Driven on by the strong performances of Andrew O’Donoghue, Tommy Dobbyn, and Eoin Healy they began to move the ball at pace and with two points from the inform Russell and one from Healy they gained parity as the game entered the second quarter. A point from William Joyce was cancelled by a similar score from Russell but then Fr O’Neill began to find their range and with well-taken points from play by Liam O’Driscoll, Fergal Duffy, Gavin Foley and William Joyce they went in at the break leading 1-08 to 0-07.
On the resumption Aghada began to push forward but for all their pressure all they could muster was a pointed free from Russell in the 36th minute. For their part Fr O’Neills were defending strongly and none more so than Barry Hayes, Irwin Lane, John Barry and Tadhg Motherway, Mark Hayes was holding his own in midfield while up front Gavin Foley, Liam O’Driscoll and William Joyce had their moments. A point from Foley restored Fr O’Neills four points advantage but sadly for them this was to be their last score as Aghada upped their efforts. They were still finding scores hard to come by but with two from Ronan Kennedy and one from Healy there was now only the bare minimum between the sides as the game entered its final quarter. Full credit to Fr O’Neills as they withstood challenge after challenge and they themselves could have strengthened their position had it not been for some missed oppertunities and the alertness of the Aghada ‘keeper Raymond Savage. However with four minutes remaining Aghada eventually equalised with a sweet points from David Rice and two minutes later in a nail-biting finale Dobbyn sent over the winner to see his side go through to the third round on the final scoreline of 0-13 to 1-09.

Thur 26th P 2 M F L Aghada 1-8 Mayfield 2-2

Aghada win 1st premier minor game and Inflict 1st defeat on Mayfield
After coming close in both hurling and football we finally made the brake through with a good win over the city boys but how close it was.
Aghada opened the scoring with a minor before against the run of play Mayfield goaled to take the lead and followed with a point. Despite numerous attacks Aghada could only add two more minors before the interval. Aghada always looked the better side but could not convert their chances. Josh O’ Shea, Michael Russell, cut through at will. Eoin Savage was commanding the backline and set up many an attack. Indeed all ours lads looked good.
On resumption Aghada took over scoring five points on the trot of which two could have been goals. Then like the Eire Óg game we gave away possession and in a blink of an eye the city boys landed a point followed by a goal to tie the game as time ran out. Up stepped Josh who from centre field took on the ball and made a fantastic run before lobbing the ball over the keepers head to give Aghada the spoils and their 1st set of points. Andrew O’Donoghue, Chris Cashman and Dave Rice also looked good.

evening echo report
A goal four minutes from time by Josh O’Shea saw Aghada gain the points in this Ulster Bank Co Premier 2 Minor Football League, Group 1 game which was played in Rostellan on Thursday night last. In what was a hard fought encounter the visitors went in at the break leading 1-01 to 0-03 with their goal coming from William Holland, after a brilliant move started and finished by himself, and a point from Cian O’Connor while their opponent’s scores came from Michael Russell, Michael Desmond and Josh O’Shea. In the second half the home side came more into contention and with Michael Russell, Andrew O’Donovan, Eoin Savage, Tommy Dobbins, Josh O’Shea, Seamus O’Gormain and Christopher Cashman coming more into view. Some excellent points from Russell, Desmond and O’Shea gave them the advantage but with the game reaching its final phase Mayfield who had stern performances from Olan Bond, Niall Creedon, Darran Wise and William Holland fought back and drew level with a stunning goal from Liam Chevalier and it now looked as if they would take the laurels but in an inspirational moment O’Shea won possession and with coolness lobbed the advancing ‘keeper for the winning goal to give his side a 1-08 to 2-02 victory.

Aghada 0-8 Eire Og 0-12

Thur 5th March Ulster Bank Premier 2 County Minor Football League

Aghada 1-8 Eire Óg 1-12

The visitors went home with the spoils after a hard hour’s football. Aghada started the better a point from Ronan Kennedy opened the game. Michael Russell kicked 3 to put Aghada ahead after ten minutes and looking good. But back came the Ovens boys kicking some mighty points to lead by 3 as we entered the second quarter. Aghada pressed hard but Eire Óg broke up the attack and on the brake lobed over points. Aghada were awarded a penalty which was saved but Josh O’Shea followed up his own shot and rattled the net to level the game. Aghada were again guilty of poor passing and let Éire Óg finish out the half with two more points to lead at the brake by 0-10 to 1-5.
On resumption Aghada were the better side and when Eire Óg had a man sent off the game swung Aghada’s way. Scores were now hard to come bye, with both sides squandering chances. Russell and Josh tore open the visitors defence but to know avail. As time ran out the game swung from end to end then in two brakes a ways after Aghada gave the ball away Eire Óg scored first a point and then a minute later a goal against the run of play and only for Chris Cashman it would have been more. Another loss at this level but we had our chances and could have won this one. Michael Russell, Josh O’Shea, Andrew O’Donoghue and Chris Cashman were in sublime form for the home side.
