Sun 13th Dec Ladies Football East Cork Minor Final

Aghada 3-9 .Watergrasshill 2-11

AGHADA CAPTURE EAST CORK MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Last Sunday,on a crisp winter afternoon,Aghada landed their first East Cork Minor Championship title against a much fancied Watergrasshill side in Watergrasshill. Aghada got off to a flying start, with Emma Farmer rattling the net within the first minute. Aghada's defense held up well, and with Karen O'Connell,Lisa Ring, Claire Day,Roisin Culligan and captain Laura Burchill on top form, nothing got past them easy. Both sides were reduced to 11 players for a period when Claire Day was injured as a result of a nasty tackle and a yellow card and sin-bin was given to the Watergrasshill player. Watergrasshill were awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half but the shot was blocked by goalkeeper Kate Ring and cleared down the field.Aghada went in 6 points up at half-time. Aghada's fitness was a crucial factor in this game.Up front,Emma Farmer,Rosin Phelan Kate Dixon, Emer Murphy, Hannah Looney and Orla Culligan were full of running and with their constant attacking threat, rattled the net twice more but so did the Hill and going into the final 5 minutes it was game on. Aghada hung on in the end to win by a margin of 2 points, 3-9 to 2-11. Well done to all the girls who gave everything for the hour and reaped the rewards at the end of a tough and long year, but especially to our two U-12's Hannah Looney and Orla Culligan who were called up at the last minute and both got excellent scores.
Also a big thanks to Deirdre Culligan, and Teresa and Ger Looney for all their hard work in getting a minor team together so late in the season.
Team: Kate Ring, Laura Burchill(Cpt), Karen O'Connell, Claire Day, Roisin Culligan, Roisin Phelan, Emma Farmer, Lisa Ring, Hannah Looney, Emer Murphy, Kate Dixon, Orla Culligan.

On Monday November 30th, Aghada Ladies Football Club held their annual AGM in the GAA Pavilion. We had 120 member in 2009 approx 70 of whom were U12. We had a good turnout and would like to thank all for attending on a very bitter night.
We recapped on a very successful year for ladies football in the parish, especially in the juvenile section. Our U-16's were victorious against a much fancied Midleton outfit in the East Cork ''B'' League final. Our U-12's completed a clean sweep in East Cork, winning both the ''A'' League and Championship. We had a very strong panel of 30 U-10's this year, winning 4 out of their 5 games in the East Cork League but were unfortunate enough to lose the semi-final to St.Colman's. Unfortunately Conor Phelan who has been training the U-10's for the past few years in stepping down and we are all very sorry to see him go. We would like to thank him for all the time, effort and commitment he has given to the club and he will undoubtedly be a loss but we hope to see him back sometime in the future. Our Junior team, after the great start we made a few years back, didn't have a great year.We struggled to get numbers for training and matches all year. We didn't manage to win any County League game and struggled to get a team out for the County Championship and another East Cork competition. Finally we played Watergrasshill in October in the East Cork Championship but despite our girls best efforts, it wasn't to be. Maybe with more matches behind us, it could have been a different story. We would like to thank Kenneth and Ger for all the effort and time they put in with us this year. As somebody once said, we've great players but not a great time but this is all going to change in 2010!!(Anyone interested in coaching the Junior panel for 2010, please let us know either through one of the committee members or players.)

We would also like to congratulate Hannah Looney who won an All-Ireland U-14 medal with Cork and to Roisin Phelan represented Aghada on the Cork U-16 team. Also to Amanda Benett and Cassie Tynan who both represented Aghada and Cork in the Primary Schools games. On our Junior team, we would like to congratulate Ursula Day on receiving "Player of the Year" for 2009 and Sinead McCarthy on receiving "Club person of the Year".Both awards were well deserved by both girls. Finally we would like to thank all those involved in the Ladies Football Club-trainers, selectors, parents and member. Many thanks for all your help, without you the club wouldn't survive. We would also like to thank Aghada GAA for the use of their facilities throughout the year.

Incoming Committee for 2010:
Chairperson-Annmarie McAllister
Secretary-Teresa Looney
Treasurer-Liam Budden
Registrar-Alena Tynan
PRO-Kate Ring
Others-Sinead McCarthy
Brendan Murphy

We will be bag-packing in Tesco on December and would ask that all member give just one hour of their time on that day so we will have funds to run the club next year as we rely dearly on this fundraiser as our main source of income.

Aghada U12 girls achieve East Cork A League and Championship double

Aghada U12 girls finished their 2009 season on a high note on Sunday last, Oct 11th, winning the East Cork A Championship final.

Having beaten Bride Rovers in a tough semi-final on Sunday 4th, it was back to Carrigtwohill to face Fermoy in the final.

Playing with a strong breeze, Fermoy dominated the opening period, registering 1-3 in the initial 10 minutes, before the first Aghada score. The Aghada girls settled and worked the ball from the half back line of Amanda Bennett, Cassie Tynan and Sinead O’Driscoll through to the forwards, resulting in a goal from Hannah Looney. Fermoy answered with a further goal and maintained their six point lead. Aghada worked hard to add two points before the half time whistle.

The second half started brightly for Aghada with a goal in the opening minutes. Points from Hannah Looney and Meghan Barnes brought the score to level by mid-way through the half. Determined supportive play from forwards Niamh O’Shea, Caoimhe Robinson, Sorcha Phelan, Hayley Nagle, Christine Moran and Nessa Fitzpatrick along with midfielders Hannah Looney and Hannah Rose ensured Aghada dominated in the possession stakes during this vital period, scoring a further point to edge ahead. Two points in rapid succession from Cassie Tynan then stretched the lead to three points. Fermoy replied with a point, but this was again answered by an Aghada point.

In the final tense minutes, Fermoy approached the Aghada goal dangerously on a number of occasions, but determined defence from the Aghada goalkeeper Claire Coghlan and backs Claire Wall, Amanda Bennett, Sophie Bawden and Anna Wall ensured that Aghada emerged victorious.

Thanks are extended to Fermoy for a very sporting contest.

Full time score: Aghada 2-8 Fermoy 2-5

Well done to the entire Aghada panel for a season characterised by exemplary teamwork throughout both their League and Championship campaigns.

Aghada 0-9 Rosscarbery 0-6

Aghada U12 girls travelled to Rosscarbery, on Sunday, 6th September, to play the Cork “Premier A” Championship Quarter-Final. The wet weather made the ground very heavy and playing conditions difficult.

In a tight first half, points were exchanged by both teams. Aghada goalkeeper Clare Coghlan was tested on many occasions, but brilliant saves ensured that the green flag was not raised. At half time, Rosscarbery led by 0-6 to 0-4.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Aghada continued chasing scores with good teamwork by all of the forwards. While a goal attempt was well saved by the Rosscarbery keeper, points from Hannah Looney and Cassie Tynan gave Aghada the lead. In the last ten minutes, Rosscarbery fought hard for a comeback, but tight defensive play by the full back line comprising of Anna Wall, Sophie Bawden and Claire Wall, with half backs Caoimhe Robinson, Amanda Bennett and Sinead O’Driscoll, ensured that Rosscarbery were held scoreless.
