Aghada 1-8 Midleton 1-11

Midleton win hard fought game

In a game that ebbed and flowed at different times Midleton just got the better of Aghada in a windy Aghavine last Tue night. The game was dominated by backs through out with Midleton opening the better.
Their half back line of Tommy Wallace, Barry Fitzgerald, and Rob Barry held Aghada scoreless for the first twenty minutes. Midleton’s centre fielder Justin Costigan opened the scoring with a point on the 4th minute. Kevin McSweeney landed two placed balls to go three points up before Aghada got on the score board. Aghada moved veteran Davie Creedon to centre forward and Aghada started a mine scoring spree. Three points from Tony Wall Two from frees followed by a great point from play had Aghada level by the 24th minute. Then came the turning point a long ball in was not dealt with by the Keeper and Alan Creedon reacted first and he scrambled the ball over the line and Aghada were ahead by the 25th minute despite not scoring for the aforementioned 20 minute spell Wall and Creedon tacked on two points while McSweeney replied with two placed balls to leave the half time score 1-5 to 0-5.
After our ten minute spell of scores they suddenly dried up again save for the lone point by Oisin Cotter for the town on the 41st m. the game was now on a knifes edge, Aghada failed to convert important frees then Gloom descended a long high ball in from man of the match Tommy Wallace was rifled to the net by Nial Walsh to give the town the lead. Like the 1st half this was the catalyst to open the scoring and 23 minutes into the half Wall landed a class point for the seasiders 1st score of the half . As the clock ran down Aghada could only manager two scores to the town’s five. In near dark conditions ref Peter Hegarty blew the long whistle and Midleton now met Sarsfields in the semi final.

Fri 14th Aug J B H C replay

Aghada 3-16 Youghal 1-11

Aghada make no mistake second time round.
Goals at vital times turned this game for Aghada. The 1st came just before the short whistle with Youghal leading by two points playing with a strong wind. Dave Creedon plucked the ball out of the sky and planted it to give Aghada the lead for the 1st time. The second and third came just after resumption when the other Creedon Alan struck for the two. The second was a gem when he soloed in and then with no room to swing the hurl he kicked to the net. Aghada never looked back after this and ran out handy winners. But before the goals it was nip and tuck with some great scores from both sides. Youghal raced into a 4 point to one lead mainly due to the efforts of Gary Kelly who was flying at centre forward. Aghada switched Eoin Savage on Kelly and his influence waned while up front for Aghada Tony Wall landed five points to keep in tough.

Wed 29th Junior B Hurling Championship

Aghada 1-12 Youghal 1-12

Aghada and Youghal produced an enthralling game of hurling last Wednesday night in Aghavine. We got off to the worst possible start when a long ball into the square was dispatched past keeper Mickey Lewis for the opening score of the game. Aghada responded well and 2 points from play by Tosser and The returning Billy Hennessy got us back into the game. 2 points from Youghal put them back in the lead. Aghada now started to get on top with Tom O Neill and Stephen Gilroy now dominating and this showed as we started to score some fine scores to take the lead. Tony Wall – Billy and Tosser scored some fine points. When Alan Creedon tapped over a point and Tony got another cracker after beating two players and putting it over from the side line we had a goal lead heading into injury time. 4 minutes of injury time saw youghal tag on 2 points to leave the minimum between the sides at the short whistle.
After losing Conor Rice during the first half Aghada were dealt another blow at half time losing Mickey Lewis at half time. Tosser got the first score of the second half but then Youghal started to take over and fired four points without reply. 2 points from Tony and Tosser either side of scores for youghal had the game finely balanced heading into the last 10 mins. With 5 minutes to play Youghal tapped over another point to leave a goal between the sides. With time running out a 65 from the outstanding Tosser was flicked into the net by Dave Creedon. From the Puck out Youghal got another point but when it looked like another heart breaking defeat Mark ‘Tosser’ Lewis stepped up to hit his 7th point of the hour to force this game to a replay.
