Evening Echo Intermediate Hurling Championship semi final

Aghada 0-11 Valley Rvs 3-11

Aghada bowed out of this year hurling Championship at the semi final stage after losing by 3 goals to Valley Rovers. Playing with aid of the wind in the first half Aghada got off to a good start with 3 points in the opening 5 mins when Trevor O Keeffe Cian Fleming and Vincent Morrissey all raised the with flag with good scores from play. After 10mins we were 0-4 to 0-1 ahead with another point from play from Cian and he added his third and Aghada’s 5th after 14 Minutes. Valley Rovers stayed in touch with 2 frees and a 65 but another white flag from Vincent from over on the sideline on the stroke of half time gave us a 2 point lead at the short whistle. The second half started with a point from Valley which was answered by Pearse O Neill. Then the killer blows came when in the space of a minute and a half Valley Rovers blasted in 2 goals to leave us with an up hill battle. 3 points one from John Connolly and 2 more from the on the fire Cian narrowed the gap to 2 points with 15 minutes to play. Valley Rovers then added 2 points to give themselves a bit of breathing space and on 55 minutes a well taken goal by The Valley full forward put this game out of sight. A late free from Trevor O Keeffe wasn’t enough to claw our way back into the game. Two late points by our opponents added insult to injury and left the final score of Aghada 0-11 Valley Rovers 3-11.

Aghada 2-9 Dripsey 1-11

If Aghada’s display the last day was good this one was better, playing like their lives depended on it, they hooked, blocked, and chased ball that they had no right to win. This was as good a game as you could hope to see. But boy did we live on our nerves. We won the 1st half well when Pearse was at his brilliant best bagging two goals one a trade mark solo and blasting to the net, we also landed 4 minors one each from Trevor, Vincent, Fleming and the will of the wisp Stephen O’Keeffe to leave us 2 goals clear after playing with the wind. 2-4 to 0-4 was the score at the short whistle. To be fair to Dripsey it took some outstanding defence work from John Paul who again covered himself in glory, as did ever green Kenneth O’Keeffe who soloed the length of the field to set up a point. Kieran O’Connor was also outstanding as was Alan Morrissey.
On resumption the All Ireland champions set about their task with not little self belief and had Aghada pegged back to 2 points after 9 minutes. But the line was not found wanting on the 35m Michael Glavin replaced Finbarr Day and what a contribution he made, as did John Connelly who replaced Shane Wall. On the 43rd m Cian Fleming calmed the nerves with a point but Dripsey hit back with two to make it a one point game as we enterer the last quarter. Aghada now upped their game with the subs making a big impact 3 points in a five minute spell and Aghada looked well. Mike Glavin, the very influential Vincent Morrissey, and Cian Fleming pointing. Back came Dripsey as they hunted in packs and were finally reward with a goal on the 55m the fat was back in the fire. But how we responded a minute later Brendan Crowley landed the score to lead again as the count down began. How Dripsey attracted and how we defended ball after ball in a mighty tussle a few times the Mid Cork men got free but were stopped from scoring by some fierce tackles. Then they sent the last ball into the square only for a Dripsey hurley to touch it but with our hearts nearly stopped the ball trickled and that was that. Now its ground hog day a semi final clash against our 1st round conquers Valley Rovers in late September we hope, when Conor and the boys have Sam safely in the Parish.

O’Neil’s double blast fires Aghada through

By Therese O’Callaghan Irish Examiner

THERE was quality and excitement in abundance in Páirc UI Rinn last evening as two teams renowned for their battling traits served up a thrilling Cork County IHC quarter-final. Ultimately it was Aghada who advanced to meet Valley Rovers in the semi-final.
This match captured the imagination for various reasons, but the fact Aghada were down from the premier grade this year and Dripsey had stepped up, made for a fascinating duel. Pearse O’Neill’s goals one right at the start, and his second on the run up to half time gave Drispey it all to do. But the mid Cork side stormed into the game in the second half a fierce tussle ensued at the edge of the square between JP O’Connor and Diarmuid O’Riordan, and whilst O’Riordan belted home a goal to tie the game five minutes from time, Aghada hung on.
Dripsey lost their centre back John O’Riordan to an ankle injury after only 14 minutes and while it had an unsettling effect, they got their act together quickly with the switch of Conor Hayes to the half back line working a treat. John Carey was inspi¬rational alongside him, but so too was the Aghada rear which were giving nothing away. Aghada led 1-2 to 0-4 after 15 min¬utes and a productive spell up to half time prevented Drispey from raising any sort of a flag. Their full back line 29 was superb, epitomized by a huge long delivery by JP O’Connor that was won by O’Neill out on the wing. His sprint along the end line resulted in his sec¬ond goal eight minutes from the break. Dripsey came out with all guns blaz¬ing after the break. Four points on the spin from two O’Riordan frees, Gary Murphy and David Buckley yielded a
Two point game. After firing over these magnificent points there was plenty of passion in Drispey’s play. Aghada couldn’t get their first point of the re-start until the 44th minute, so clear¬ly this tie was beginning to sparkle. With the tension high, chances were missed on both sides. The game ebbed and flowed with never more than a couple of points separating them. That was until Diarmuid O’Riordan grabbed Dripsey’s goal to level matters. Trevor O’Keeffe landed a free to put Aghada in front, but Drispey will be disappointed to not have forced the draw after opting to go for a goal when a point might have been the better op¬tion.

Aghada 1-16 Ballygarven 0-7

The smiling faces of the Aghada crowd told it all.
From such a low to such a high in 5 days what a transformation. Back to the old ways, fought tooth and nail for every ball hunted and harried, blocked and hooked like there was no tomorrow. Winning the toss Aghada started with a strong wind and Trig opened the scoring from the throw in. he pointed a free a minute later and Aghada were away. With John Paul O’Connor on fire Aghada repelled every attack. Aghada pressed home their advantage with the impressive minor Eoin Healy flying. On the 7th m Trigger found the net to stretch the lead. Ballygarvan fought back and Aghada had a bit of luck when they scrambled the ball when it should have been goaled. The busily Stephen O’Keeffe tacked on a point as did Pearse O’Neill who had his best hurling game in an Aghada shirt for quite a long time. As the 1st Quarter closed Vincent Morrissey became the 5th Aghada played to score from play. As the game moved on Aghada grew in statue as Melvin and Alan Morrissey took control of the game. Paudie Wall and Cian Fleming added points to leave Aghada well ahead at the short whistle by 1-11 to 0-2.
While the wind was a major factor in the 1st half Aghada never allowed Ballygarvan the room to avail of it. On their 1st attack they won a free from which they opted to go for goal but the mighty Johno came out with the leather. Scores were hard to come by as the south east boys upped their game big time. Still Aghada stayed in touch and when in the 56th m Finbarr Day became the 8th Aghada man to score. Who were the stars ? This was a 15 man game with every one giving of their best but special mention must be given to the even green Kenneth O’Keeffe. well done lads ye restored pride in the Gansie.

O’Keeffe sparkles as Aghada prove far too strong for Ballygarvan

Aghada 1-16 Ballygarvan 0-7

By Michael Ellard Irish Examiner Saturday, July 18, 2009

A ONE-HORSE race at Páirc Uí Rinn last night as a vastly superior Aghada inflicted a crushing 12-points defeat on Ballygarvan in the Evening Echo Cork IHC second round.

Leading from start to finish, Aghada, with the outstanding Trevor O’Keeffe scoring 1-7, six from frees, ruled the roost and never allowed Ballygarvan a glimmer of hope. Ballygarvan, outclassed in practically every department, were a bitter disappointment and the die was cast for them long before the final whistle.

Aghada took maximum advantage of their strong wind assistance in the opening sequences. Trevor O’Keeffe pointed them into the lead after just 15 seconds and the sparkling left corner forward increased his side’s advantage with a pointed free two minutes later.

O’Keeffe was on fire as Aghada proceeded to dominate. Centre-forward Eoin Healy powered them three points in front before O’Keeffe hit a blockbuster of a goal in the ninth minute. It was all Aghada as a shell-shocked Ballygarvan side tried disconcertingly to fit the pieces together.

Four further points from midfielder Steve O’Keeffe, Trevor O’Keeffe, who converted another free, menacing full-forward Pearse O’Neill and left half forward Vincent Morrissey propelled Aghada into a 1-7 lead after the opening quarter and things looked dire for out-gunned Ballygarvan.

With JP O’Connor a commanding presence at full-back for the East Cork side, Ballygarvan rarely got a look in up front and two more successive strikes from frees by Trevor O’Keeffe left 1-9 between them. Midfielder Paudie Wall made it 1-10 before half forward William O’Halloran finally broke Ballygarvan’s duck in the 26th minute. Full forward Mark Kennefick added another but a late strike from right half forward Cian Fleming left it 1-11 to 0-2 in Aghada’s favour at half time.

Any semblance of a Ballygarvan comeback after the resumption evaporated when full-forward Mark Kennefick failed to convert a close in free and two pointed frees at the other end from Trevor O’Keeffe sealed the Carrigdhoun side’s dismal fate.

Ballygarvan lacked the scoring power and finesse to make a match of it and always allowed Aghada to gain the upper hand. Trailing 1-14 to 0-4 at the end of the third quarter, Ballygarvan did manage to put a look of respectability on the scoreboard with two pointed frees from Kennefick and another from play by corner forward Gary White.

But what was a nightmare occasion for them, Ballygarvan failed to score again in the closing stages and a supremely authoritative Aghada side brought the curtain down on their resounding victory with two splendid late scores from Finbarr Day and Vincent Morrissey.

Collins hero for Valley Rovers
By Michael Ellard (Irish Examiner)

Thursday, May 07, 2009

THE switch of Eamon Collins from the left wing to full forward reaped a handsome reward for Valley Rovers, victors over Aghada in the first round of the Evening Echo Cork County IHC at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night.

Two superb goals from Collins in the closing quarter decided the outcome of a substandard game, with Aghada shooting 16 wides to their opponents’ 12. It looked all so different for Aghada early on when Alan Morrissey and Vincent Morrissey, with two points in rapid succession, edged them into the lead while playing against a strong wind.

It took Valley Rovers a long time to find any rhythm but then four points on the trot from Jeremy Hurley, Gerard Rice, Eoin Manning and Eamon Collins put them in the driving seat.

But two points from team captain Trevor O’Keeffe levelled the game for Aghada before Rice, with his second pointed free in the 28th minute, nudged Valley Rovers into an interval lead of 0-5 to 0-4.

In the third quarter but Valley Rovers were leading by two points when Collins, now at full forward, kicked his first goal to the net in the 46th minute. O’Keeffe got a point back for Aghada but two minutes from the end Collins wrapped things up for Valley Rovers when his wide angled shot from the left wing found managed to find its way into Aghada net.

Aghada's hurlers played out a very entertaining high scoring game last wed night under lights in rostellan. Played in dry but very cold and windy conditions the standard of hurling on display was top class with some very well taken scores from both sides. Bandon Proved to be a bit to strong on the night and their superior score getting when under pressure proved to be the difference on the night.
