SENIOR FOOTBALL 2008

Sun 22nd June Senior football championship

Aghada 3-7 Castlehaven 1-14

The Aghada fans were taken on a rollercoaster ride in Brinny on Sunday last, before eventually leaving defeated and out of football championship for another year. 7 points up with 2 minutes to half time, somehow trailing by 3 with full time approaching. Aghada then score 2 goals, one however is harshly disallowed and a “suspect” Haven point sends the West Cork side into the next round and leaves Aghada deflated.

The scoring started after 2 minutes when Trevor O’Keeffe took the first of his two nice points. Castlehaven responded almost immediately and with a strong wind and two evenly matched sides, scores were at a premium. After 20 minutes it was 3 points to 2 in Castlehaven’s favour. Pearse O’Neill moved to centre forward for Aghada and kicked over 2 points on the trot. Next a well worked move saw the 2 man full forward line open up Castlehaven and Cian Fleming buried a great goal. 2 minutes later the same player was put through by O’Neill and while his first attempt was saved, he collected the rebound himself, beat another man and fired home to the roof of the net. 2-4 Aghada, 0-3 Castlehaven, and things were looking very good but unfortunately Aghada didn’t see out the first half as well as they might have.4 minutes of injury time were played and the Haven recovered to kick 3 points all in injury time.

The 4 point half time lead was down to 3 straight from the restart, but Aghada were still seeing plenty of the ball, although they did kick a number of wides at the start of the 2nd half. Fleming pointed a free after John O’Connor was fouled on 37 minutes, but from here out Castlehaven started to really get on top. Despite the best efforts of Brendan Crowley and Ronan Power at the back, the Haven hit 1-6 in the next 20 minutes with only points from Gerard Melvin and Kieran O’Connor in response. To make matters worse the Haven goal on 41 minutes, came as Aghada were clearing the lines and Aiden Kelleher had to move the referee out of his way to collect a pass, but the referee called back play and hopped the ball. 10 seconds later it was in the back of the Aghada net and the sides were level. So with full time fast approaching Castlehaven had swung the game in their favour by 10 points and now led by three. Kieran O’Connor then set up O’Neill who saw his goal attempt saved by the ‘keeper only for O’Keeffe to bury the rebound. Celebrations were short lived however, as after consultations with the umpires the goal was ruled as a square goal. The Haven went down the other end and kicked an insurance point, before O’Connor again started a raid that finished with substitute Tom Holohan scoring Aghada’s third goal. From the kickout Aghada mounted one last attack, but it came to naught and Castlehaven were victorious. Hard luck to all Aghada players who gave it their all on the day and to selectors Kevin O’Connell, Paul O’Donoghue, Darren Lee and coach Keith Ricken. Aghada team and scorers –

Sun 18th May Senior Football Championship R2

Aghada 3-12 Bantry 0-9

Aghada provably gave one of the best displays of team work ever. All fifteen were stars but the brightest of them all was Young Fleming he ended up scoring six points three from play and yet it was not his best day kicking but what scores he set up.
Pearse was back to himself, if not better scoring the opening goal on the ten minute mark. What about Billy Hennessy at centre back, Tom O’Neill at centre field, Aidan Kelleher also at centre field who directed the play like a general, and then the evergreen Ronan Dwane who must have a pass to Tir na nÓg. Trevor O’Keeffe now after scoring four goals in two hours of football. What about Johno finally showing the potential he showed as a Cork u21

Bantry opened the scoring with a point from Shane Drummy on the 1st minute Fleming replied two minutes later from a placed ball. Trigger added another before Pearse burst through for the opening goal. Bantry replied with a Declan Barron point before Trig goaled after Fleming set him up on the 17th minute. Pearse and Johno added minors before Trig but Aghada out of sight with his second goal with 5 minutes left to the short whistle. With our back line air tight Bantry found it very hard to make headway. Fleming added two more minors one from a 45 to see Aghada well ahead 3-6 to 0-2 at the brake.

On resumption Bantry kicked into gear converting three placed balls into scores one by Drummy and two by Barron before Fleming found the posts for Aghada. Two more minors from Bantry before again Fleming stopped the rot on the 51st minute. A minute later sub Damien O’Neill pointed for Bantry. But how Aghada responded Johno, Fleming, Pearse pointing and then in a mighty move in which Fleming back in his half backline found Colm Power who put Johno away for goal but the keeper made a mighty save. Johno added a point and then O’Neill converted a free for Bantry to leave Aghada convincing winners. Bring on the hurling

Fri 18th April Senior Football Championship

Aghada 2-7 Nemo Rangers 3-10

Sparking Nemo start four-in-a-row quest in style

Nemo Rangers 3-10 Aghada 2-7 (Jim O’Sullivan Irish Examiner)

A FUNNY game this in the drizzle and fading light in Midleton last night in the opening round of the Cork senior football championship.

After 19 minutes of effort from both sides, All-Ireland club finalists Nemo Rangers led Aghada by 0-3 to 0-1 before getting a goal either side of half time and enjoying a 13-point advantage at the three-quarters stage.

And then we saw Aghada persistence paying off with a goal from their best forward, Trevor O’Keeffe in the 54th minute and after Nemo lost team captain Maurice McCarthy for a second yellow card offence, they finally got their forward game going with a further goal and three points in an eight-minute period.

Of course, it happened all too late for the East Cork side, whose work-rate more than matched that of the craftier Nemo but whose use of the ball going forward was often seriously deficient by comparison. In short, it was a typical display from the reigning champions, well organised and methodical, who on this display will be hard to stop in their quest to achieve four-in-a-row.

They started with just one change in personnel from the side which lost in the All-Ireland Club Final in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day — Sean O’Brien at right half-forward in place of Rickey Kenny — but with positional alterations both in defence and attack, which featured county players Derek Kavanagh and James Masters at centre-back and centre-forward respectively. And, not for the first time, Masters played a key role in attack, despite the best efforts of Paul Kilbane and Kieran O’Connor.

Masters got their opening score, from a 9th minute free and while Aghada were to be frustrated by the lack of return from a number of promising attacks, they could feel satisfied with their defensive covering, which was assisted by team captain John Paul O’Connor and others dropping back to help ease the pressure. The problem was they missed good scoring chances, resulting from the hard work Ronan Dwane, O’Connor, O’Keeffe and Cian Fleming — along with Tom O’Neill at midfield.

Nemo finished the half strongly. The 10 minutes before the break saw them finish with a flourish with the first of two goals from Alan Cronin in injury time, when he had the simple task of finishing the ball to the net after ‘keeper Evan Kennedy dropped an angled shot from David Kearney.

Turning over 1-5 to 0-1 in front, Aghada suffered another body blow when slack marking left Kearney in for a goal chance which he took expertly. Nemo’s defence was even harder to penetrate, Peter Morgan was stronger at midfield and with Masters, Dylan Mehigan, Kearney and Paul Kerrigan to the forefront up front, they maintained control.

A third goal followed, from Alan Cronin (created by Mehigan) and it served to highlight the difference between the teams — Nemo’s play being the more productive. But, to give Aghada credit, their effort never faltered and they were to be rewarded at the end — their supporters getting special satisfaction from an excellent goal initiated by Kilbane, and finished in style by O’Keeffe.

Scorers for Nemo Rangers: A. Cronin 2-2; J. Masters 0-5 (0-3 frees); D. Kearney 1-1; P. Kerrigan (free) and D. Mehigan 0-1 each.
