PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING 2008

Sun 20th July Permier Intermediate Hurling relegation final

Aghada 2-7 Argideen Rangers 1-17

Aghada were in the 2005 Premier intermediate hurling final. Since then however only 2 out of 11 championship games have been won. This year all 4 have been lost, so it is hard to argue that getting relegated last Sunday is not a fair reflection of where hurling is at in Aghada. There are of course always counter arguments and bar last Sunday, Aghada looked capable of beating the other 3 of this years opponents. Injuries have also played a big part in the relegation. Mick Galvin and Paul Kilbane were unable to start on Sunday while Ronan Dwane and Trevor O’Keeffe both carried injuries into the game and ultimately failed to play the full 60 minutes. In truth Aghada never got near the level of the previous weeks game against Tracton, with only a handful of players playing up to standard. Pearse O’Neill was one of these and he opened the scoring on 2 minutes after Eoin Healy laid on the pass. It was tit for tat in the opening 10 minutes, a second O’Neill point and an O’Keeffe free being matched by 3 scores for the Timoleague men. Now however Argideen got on top. They hit another point and then got a rather fortuitous goal when Aghada ‘keeper Martin Day was deceived by the kick off a bouncing ball. 2 more points quickly followed without a response from Aghada. On 23 minutes O’Neill was fouled and Ger Melvin who was playing well at midfield slotted over the point. 2 minutes later, Aghada were right back in it, when Eoin Healy goaled after a bit of a goal mouth scramble following Vincent Morrissey’s original attempt. Another Pearse earned free was converted by Melvin to leave Argideen in front at the break by a single point, but they would have the wind behind them in the second half. Again O’Neill opened the scoring in this half with another from play, but this was quickly negated by Rangers. It was a dour encounter for the next quarter of an hour, with no side managing any change to the scoreboard. A beautiful overhead pull from Morrissey was saved by Argideen’s ‘keeper and then on 17 minutes came the next score, an Argideen ’65. Morrissey replied almost straight away after some fine work from Paudie Wall at wing back. So with just over 10 minutes to play, it was a 1 point game and at this stage there was no sign of the collapse that was about to come. Argideen took over completely and hit 5 points in as many minutes without reply. John and Kieran O’Connor manfully tried to defend for Aghada, but the points kept coming, 4 in 3 minutes from the 28th to 30th minute. In between Mike Galvin had a 21 yard free saved and Pearse pounced for a second Aghada goal, but in the face of a rampant Argideen Rangers it was far too little too late . So Aghada have a long break ahead of them, before regrouping and coming back next year at intermediate level.

Sat 12th July Permier Intermediate Hurling relegation

Aghada 0-15 Tracton 1-15

Aghada hurlers find themselves in last chance saloon, just one game away from relegation after losing out to Tracton in Riverstown on Saturday last. How they find themselves in this position is anyone’s guess as a game they looked to be well in control of, was wrestled from their grasp in the dying minutes. Tracton did start the better, and led by 5 points to 1 after only eight minutes of play. From here on however, Aghada really got on top, with the half backline of Kilbane, Hennessy and Tom O’Neill all hurling well. At midfield Paudie Wall and Ger Melvin, benefited from an early switch and would both go on to have fine games. Up front Ronan Dwane was doing well on the ’40, constantly keeping the ball moving in the right direction, while inside Trevor O’Keeffe seemed well capable of taking on the Tracton defenders. The net result of this was that Aghada outscored their opponents 7pts to 1 for the remainder of the half. 3 of these scores came from the midfielders, one from Melvin, 2 from Paudie, one a real beauty from distance. Trevor hit 3 frees and also finished the half with a super point from the left wing after Martin Day had caught under his post, before finding Melvin, who in turn picked out O’Keeffe. Half time and Aghada were full value for their 2 point lead, but in truth it should have been far greater. Full forward Pearse O’Neill had missed 2 gilt edged goal chances and O’Keeffe had also flashed a shot just wide of the post.
O’Keeffe had the only score of the opening 10 minutes of the second half, when he pointed after being fouled himself. From here, right up to the 25th minute it was tit for tat as both sides swapped points. Brendan Crowley came more into it at wing forward and earned a couple of frees that O’Keeffe converted. O’Neill hit a nice point on the run to leave the score with just 5 minutes remaining, Aghada 15 V Tracton 12 and things were looking good. Significantly some of Aghada’s key players had picked up injuries at this stage. Paudie Wall, Dwane and O’Keeffe were all carrying knocks by now and their influence on the game as a result was diminished. With a minute to go Tracton reduced the deficit to 2 points and a minute later scored a goal out of nothing to give themselves the lead. In the 3 or 4 minutes of injury time, with the momentum firmly in their favour it was all Tracton, who tapped over 2 more points and preserved their status for the coming year. Aghada must have felt like they had just been mugged at the final whistle, and will now have to ready themselves for the all or nothing contest with Argideen Rangers this weekend. Aghada 0-7 Blarney 0-10

As the scoreline would suggest this was a drab and lacklustre affair, played in Páirc Uí Rinn under a scorching sun last Sat evening.
Aghada opened well with John Connelly pointing from play after three minutes; little did we think that it would take another forty minutes for Aghada to score again from play. From the puck out Johnny Hurley levelled. Then the scores dried up as both sets of backs were well on top. Trevor O’Keeffe pointed two placed balls for Aghada while Mark Cremin and Stephen O’Donoghue did like wise for Blarney.
O’Keeffe pointed two more placed balls to leave Aghada ahead at the brake 0-5 to 0-3 after a forgettable first half.
On resumption O’Donoghue landed his second sixty five to leave one between the sides. Blarney now started to motor when on the thirty seventh minute Ross McNamara forced a great save from Martin Day as the ball bounced around the square and went wide. Aghada hit back with Ger Melvin landing a long range free, from the puck out Melvin pointed Aghada’ second point from play with twenty minutes left on the clock. Little did we think that that would be Aghada’s last score? Blarney were to score six unanswered points in the last quarter as their half backline repelled all invaders in which Joe Jordan was outstanding. Aghada had a golden chance to stick a major when O’Keeffe found Connelly who found Paudie Wall but goalie Ronan Byrne was equal to the task. At the other end Day again brought off a string of saves as again the ball bounced around the square
Eight minutes were left and Aghada were still two points to the good but frees from Mark Cremin and Stephen O’Donoghue levelled. Blarney now sensed that Aghada were in trouble and with three great points from play one for sub Colin Murphy and two from Mark McCarthy leaving Aghada with the back door gone and facing the trap door for the third year running

Mon 5th May Premier Intermedate hurling Championship

Aghada 1-11 Watergrasshill 2-9

Aghada came out of the blocks the better as Michael Glavin opened the scoring from the throw in, the Hill replied straight away from a free. The evergreen Dwane scored next. Aghada fielding 4 minors were all over the hill at this stage.after a great run by Shane Wall the ball dropped into the goalies hand from his clearance Eoin Healy got his first adult championship score. Trigger added another and Aghada were coasting. The Hill replied on the 13th m but off went Aghada again to score six points without reply. Trigger, Melvin, Glavin, Johno and Vincent were well on top. The hill scored their third point as the short whistle sounded to leave Aghada ahead 0-9 to 0-3.
With alarm bells ringing the hill brought out the big guns while Noel O’Riordan came on half way through the first half it was the introduction of John Halbert that caused a buss around the ground. Within 7 minutes of the restart the hill had 1-2 and would score two more minors before Trigger stopped the flow on the 44th m to level the game again seven minutes later he put Aghada ahead but twas short lived as the hill levelled within a minute. It was now all the hill and they were guilty of some glaring misses then with 3 minutes left on the clock they goaled and one would have thought that was that but no Trigger showing first class skill surrounded by red shirts got his pass away to Vincent and he picked his spot sides level again. Both sides had changes to win the game and on the stoke of full time the Hill pointed to get out of jail. Aghada had some great chances in the opening quarter but the last pass when astray. Still with four minors starting not a bad days work but we have a repeat of last years second round v Blarney
