There was to be no end of season silverware for Aghada when the U21’s were beaten by Carrigtwohill in Midleton last Sunday morning the 21st of October. In truth Carrigtwohill were far the better side, but thanks to some dogged defending Aghada stayed in contention for an unlikely win right up to the end. Carrigtwohill had 2 points on the board before full forward Shane Scanlon beat a couple of Carrig defenders and slotted over Aghada’s first point. That was after nine minutes and Aghada wouldn’t score again until Declan Morrissey punched home a goal on the stroke of half time. In between Carrig hit 5 points from play and led at the interval on a 7pts to 1-1 scoreline, and had had the vast majority of the play for that half. Excellent defending from Alan Morrissey, Shane Morrissey and Richie Condon meant Aghada were still in touch, turning to play with the breeze. Aghada were unlucky in that midfielder Tomas Holohan was forced off injured early in the game and even though Shane Scanlon remained a serious threat upfront, the Carrig men soon realized he was Aghada’s only threat and counteracted accordingly. Aghada did start the second period much better. Shane Wall and Conor Rice both improved in the corner back berths and Sean O’Donoghue at midfield tried manfully to carry the game to Carrigtwohill. Scanlon had his second point after a mazy run just after the restart and 5 minutes later corner forward Kenneth O’Brien hit another fine score to reduce the deficit to the bare minimum. Now it was Aghada that were on top, but some wasted frees as well as some aimless attempts from long distance, meant they never really made the most of this period of dominance. Carrig were bound to rally and that they did, kicking 3 points in the middle 10 minutes to keep themselves in a safe 4 point lead. Possession was about even for the rest of the game, but scores were hard to come by in a game with both defences now on top and in the end the game petered out to leave Carrigtwohill the champions on a 0-10 to 1-3 scoreline. Aghada Team & Scorers – Evan Kennedy, Shane Wall, Alan Morrissey, Conor Rice, Shane Morrissey, Paudie Wall, Richard Condon, Sean O’Donoghue, Tomas Holohan, Declan Morrissey(1-0), Finbarr Day, Stephen Gilroy, Kenneth O’Brien (0-1), Shane Scanlon (0-2), Alan Creedon. Subs Used – Liam Day, David Condon. |
Aghada advanced to the final of this year's U21 B competition when they had a 5 point victory over Russell Rovers in Castlemartyr last Sunday night. Aghada rocketed out of the blocks with a fine point from Kenneth O’Brien after a good move involving Alan Morrissey and Finbarr Day. However Rovers were also quick to show their intent when they forced a good save from Aghada ‘keeper Evan Kennedy. Rovers pointed the resulting ’45. From the kick out midfielder Sean O’Donoghue pointed a fine individual effort. Rovers leveled on 9 minutes and they looked dangerous every time they attacked. Aghada rallied however and hit a purple patch that would yield 3 goals in less than 5 minutes which would ultimately decide the victors. First full forward Liam Day scored with a good ground shot. Next Davy Condon set up 2 goals the first for Shane Scanlon and the second a real beauty from Kenneth O’Brien. Rovers had a point in between the first 2 goals but when Kob pointed on 17 minutes Aghada were 3-3 to 3 points in front. Aghada seemed to fall asleep at this point and Russell Rovers came back into it. 2 points were followed with a fine goal from a long ball into attack. Then a point in stoppage time meant they had notched 1 – 3 without reply to leave just a goal between the sides at half time. Cian Fleming had 2 points to open the scoring for the second half. In between Kennedy was again called on to make a save in the Aghada goal and you got the feeling that Aghada still hadn’t quite come out of their self induced slumber. A point from Rovers and then a scrambled 2nd goal for them, and suddenly there was just a single point between the sides with quarter of the game to go. The goal did however succeed in jolting Aghada back into action and they responded with 3 excellent points from play plus one Cian Fleming free. With 10 minutes to go the gap was 5 points. 2 frees from each side in the final 10, completed the scoring and Aghada marched on as deserving winners. Aghada team and scorers – Evan Kennedy, Shane Morrissey, Declan Morrissey, Conor Rice, Alan Creedon, Alan Morrissey (capt.), Richard Condon, Stephen Gilroy, Sean O’Donoghue (0-1), Shane Scanlon (1-2), Finbarr Day, Cian Fleming (0-5, 4f), Davy Condon, Liam Day (1-0), Kenneth O’Brien (1-3). Subs used – Shane Wall, David Leahy, Paudie Wall. |
The U21 footballers advanced to the second round of this year’s competition after an close and exiting duel with Castlemartyr last Saturday. A toss for venue meant the game took place in Rostellan, and Aghada opened the scoring with a Cian Fleming free after 3 minutes. Then Castlemartyr showed what a threat they posed up front, when they rattled off 1-1 in the next 5 minutes. 2 more placed balls from Cian were cancelled out by 2 similar scores for the visitors. On 24 minutes young wing back Shane Wall came forward to score a great point for Aghada, which was quickly followed by Fleming with a sublime left legged effort after the impressive Sean O’Donoghue had caught the kick out. A minute later and Aghada really put themselves in the driving seat. Wing forward, Shane Scanlon, played a quick one two with O’Donoghue, before goaling for Aghada. Castlemartyr rallied with a point, but Declan Morrissey restored the 2 point lead with the last kick of the half. The 2 point lead quickly became a one point deficit as “the Reds” came storming out of the half time huddle with a goal. Aghada responded. Another Cian free was quickly followed by one from play from the lively Kenneth O’Brien. A minute later, the tireless Finbarr Day got on the end of an Alan Creedon pass to again open a 2 point lead. 3 minutes later and Aghada were really in the accendency when full forward Liam Day burst through for Aghada’s second goal. Castlemartyr however had no intention of wilting.4 points on the trot and with 10 to play it was a one point game. Fleming converted a Kenneth O’Brien earned free, but Castlemartyr also pointed a free to again reduce the lead. With 6 minutes to play Ken O’Brien made it a 2 point game, but from here to the end it was backs to the wall defending for Aghada. With time running out Castlemartyr went in search of the goal that would win the game. Could they have kicked two points instead? Who knows, but Aghada with Alan Morrissey and Conor Rice to the fore, kept the visitor’s attack at bay and held on for a deserved victory. Aghada team & Scorers – Evan Kennedy, Paudie Wall, Stephen Gilroy, Conor Rice, Shane Wall (0-1), Alan Morrissey, Alan Creedon, Sean O’Donoghue, Declan Morrissey(0-1), Shane Scanlon(1-0), Finbarr Day(0-1), Cian Fleming(6,4f,1’45), Kenneth O’Brien(0-2), Liam Day(1-0), Richard Condon. Subs used – David Condon, Aiden O’Connell. |
