U16 FOOTBALL 2007

Mon 13th Nov u16 B football league final

Aghada 2-16 Cobh 2-2

After a hard year it all came right on the night.
Most of this team were the minor teams of 2007. A lot of hard luck story’s in both codes but Aghada found the touch on the night. Aghada race into a three point lead following points from Michael Russell (2) and Eoin Healy. Then in the space of a minute Cobh hit for two goals to lead for the first time. Aghada stuck to its task and with Russell weaving his spells Aghada were level after the 1st quarter. A goal and a point followed from Ronan Kennedy to see Aghada Ahead again after 22minutes. After the Cobh goals Aghada switched Tommy Dobbin and Eoin Savage with Savage taking over at centre back both players grew in statue and had a huge influence on the game as a result. Points followed from Healy and the majestic Russell to see Aghada ahead at the short whistle 1-8 to 2-2
On resumption Russell was again on the score board now Aghada were dominant in all quarters a point followed from Georgio after a mighty solo run. Then Sub Pádraig Mulry goaled and Aghada were out of sight. But still they were fight in Cobh Chris Cashman made a great save. While Brian Condon looked class at corner back. Points from Healy, Russell (2), Andrew O’Donoghue and a mighty effort from sub William Leahy closed out the game and gave this team their 1st football title since they won the u11 championship but what a summer it could have been

Aghada1-7 Castlelyons 1-9

Aghada bow out of u16 football
Our footballers followed the hurlers exit in round one of the championship.
Like the hurling it was a case of what if. A pity really because this is a serious team.
Aghada opened the scoring with a pointed free from the boot of Ronan Kennedy after four minutes. A minute later Michael Russell extended the lead. Castlelyons came back and were level on the ten minute mark. Russell again pointed on a minute later to restore the lead, Castlelyons levelled matters entering the 2 quarter of the game. Aghada were on top now but some bad shooting and taking wrong options cost us dearly. Ronan pointed a free on the 21st minute after John O’Brien was fouled on the edge of the square. Brian Condon, Eoin Savage were well on top in the fullback line Georgio, Tommy Dobbin were also in control of the half back line but to no avail as Castlelyons levelled matters 0-4 to 0-4 as we headed for the brake.

On resumption Aghada again went forward but were caught a sucker punch when the half back line went forward and a long ball found the centre forward all alone and despite a great effort by Eoin Savage Castlelyons goaled to go ahead for the 1st time. Andrew O’Donoghue pointed to pull one back. Castlelyons pointed on the 40th minute and from the kick out pointed again to go four points up with twenty minutes left.
Aghada now started to pile on the pressure with Russell and Eoin Healy leading the charge. O’Brien won a ball on the edge of the square and from his kick sub William Leahy was on hand to fist it to the net. Game back on. Two minutes later Russell levelled the game as Aghada took over. Aghada won a sideline but a sort pass went astray and the Castlelyons boys made no mistake. Again the Castlelyons boys won the kick out and went two up with eight minutes remaining. As time ran out they added another before Russell had one last effort but it blazed over the bar and that was that. A great game of football by two good sides but we could have been better.

Mon 27th Aug u16 football league Aghada bt Kiltha Óg

Fri 20th April u16 Peil Aghada 2-11 Russell Rv 4-6

This was a great game of football with Aghada 2-6 up after the first quarter it looked like a stroll in the park, The 2 goals coming from the boot of full forward John O’Brien. Then came the Rovers comeback opening the defence with some surging runs. Aghada were a point down with minutes left on the clock and despite a great effort we were unable to draw level. Fair play to both teams as a number of them played Minor against one and other the night before and some also played together and stared in Midleton CBS’s win in the Cork u16 A Collages final against St. Coleman’s. Michael Russell and Eoin Healy played from Aghada while Anthony Cott and Brian Hartnett played from the rovers

Mon 2nd April u16 B Peil league Aghada 2-10 Midleton 2-5

Aghada started the better with points from Dave Rice Ronan Kennedy and a mighty one from Pa Crowley. Ronan added another before Midleton go on to the score board. Midleton had two minors but Aghada looked in cruse control then came the towns opening goal to level matters. Gearóid Murphy then got in on the scoring with a lovely minor from way out. Ronan Added another before Midleton levelled again. John O’Brien gave Aghada the lead going into the brake. 0-7 to 1-3. at this stage Aghada were had pressed but Giorgio, Gearóid and Eoin Savage were in fine form.

On resumption points from Ronan Kennedy and Seamus O’Gormain but Aghada ahead again but back came Midleton with two points. Then full forward John O’Brien caught a high ball turned and blasted home to give Aghada a four point cushion. With about 6 minutes left Midleton again found Aghada’s net to leave the game on a knifes edge. A goal from a free by Kennedy restored the cushion with Eoin Healy having the last say with a point. Healy and Pádraig Mulry combined well in the centre of the park. While Tommy Dobbin improved matters when he came on.

Mon 26th march u16 B Peil league Aghada1-9 Castlelyons 2-7

Aghada just came up short in this great game of football played under lights in perfect conditions in Rostellan. A big crowd roared on both sides in a hard fought championship like game. The game started slowly, but how it finished. In truth Aghada had the winning of this game but every time we went ahead, Castlelyons came back down the field and scored. Of the two goalies Chris Cashman had the least to do. Poor shooting left Aghada down while Castlelyons got all they could and Aghada were to pay dear for their misses.
Aghada turned around at half time two points in arrears 0-6 to 0-4. With the game played at fever pitch pace we came back into the lead with four unanswered points. Then in a breakaway movement Castlelyons goaled to level the game with ten minutes left. Aghada went ahead again but for Castlelyons to level again. Then after Aghada missed two chances of goals Castlelyons again broke down the field for their second major. But fair play to Aghada they done everything in their power to get back on terms but despite getting two more minors time ran out. In one last mighty effort Andrew O’Donoghue injured himself badly lets hope he is all right.

Mon 19th march u16 B Peil league Aghada 0-10 Glenville 0-5

our u16 footballers played Glenville in a wind swept Rostellan. Aghada started slow with the visitors going 2 points up before Michael Russell pointed a free on the 16th minute. Both teams were to only score 1 more point each before the short whistle Aghada’s coming from the boot of Ronan Kennedy. Both teams had chances of goals. John O’ Brien driving one wide at one end while goalie Chris Cashman had to be alert at the other end. Aghada were best severed in this half by the afore mentioned Cashman, Giorgio Corigliano and Pádraig Mulry.
On the turn around Aghada up the ante when they swapped Michael Russell and Owen Healy, what a difference it made Russell opened the scoring followed by a Michael Desmond point, again a Russell one then in a five minute spell Healy tore Glenville apart with three points on the trot. Russell finished matters off with the final two scores to leave Aghada winners by 0-10 to Glenville’s 0-5. Eoin Savage, Tommy Dobbin impressed at the back as did Andrew O’Donoghue in the centre of the field.
