Sun 30th Sept Senior Football Championship

Aghada 1-8 St. Nicks 1-11

Aghada started the better leading 0-3 to 0-1 after 11 minutes but little did we know that we would not score again in the half. John Connelly rattled the crossbar with a mighty shot as the half ended but to avail. In between Nicks got a handy goal to put pressure on Aghada despite Pearse winning ball at will. Vincent Morrissey also gathered a lot of ball but failed to make head way. Nicks went in at half time 1-5 to 0-3 up.
On resumption Aghada started to play football. Tomas O’Neill opened the scoring after 2m. Sub Colm Power added another and suddenly we were in the game despite two bad wides. Aghada we in control but Nicks still added a point against the run of play. Paul Kilbane and the live wire Stephen O’Keeffe made it a two point game as we entered the last Quarter. Again Nicks scored O’Keeffe added a placed ball to leave us 2 down with 7 m left. Then disaster Nicks again in a quick break away pointed and from a short kick out pointed again. Nicks pointed again as time ran out to lead by five points as time ran out. Aghada made one last attempt from which Vincent Morrissey goaled by the city boys had the last say

Wed 18th April Senior Football Championship

St.Finbarrs 1-4 Aghada 0-8

Mighty win for Aghada as four Barrs men sent off.
As time ran out and Aghada four points up a melee developed involving players and mentors which resulted in four Barrs men sent off

Aghada ran the city boys raget for the first quarter of this game yet they had only two points to show for this from two frees from Ger Melvin. In a brake away movement on the 11th minute a Barrs move resulted in a penalty which was blasted wide. Another 6 minutes were to follow before the city boys got on the score board. Three minutes later they equalised. On the 26th minute Stephen O’Keeffe put Aghada ahead form another placed ball (all three frees came from Trevor O’Keeffe winning great ball).
Aghada lead at half time 0-3 to 0-2
On resumption Aghada were again first out of the blocks with O’Keeffe pointing two frees. In between the Barrs pointed. Aghada were now in command with J P O’Connor magnificent as was Billy Hennessy at full Back. Aghada were now attacking with Vincent Morrissey now at the top of his game yet Aghada could not pull away. Then in a moment of genus, Trevor not only on the sideline and with two men marking but on the 21 as well had a pot and what a point. the Barrs went down the field and added a point As we enter the last Quarter Aghada ahead 0-6 to 0-4 the game was on a knifes edge. Up steps young Cian Fleming grabs the ball and sells a dummy and what a point, then Trevor pointed to put Aghada 4 points clear with as many minutes left. From the kick out Pearse was hit and all hell broke loose and the afore mentioned melee broke out. After the game resumed the city side got a goal from a high lobbing ball. As time ran out they came again but this time the ball was cleared but only just.

Sat 7th April Senior Football Championship

Aghada 0-9 Dohenys 0-12

Aghada sporting five changes from last years semi final made all the running for the 10 minutes. Two points from placed balls by Cian Fleming in his 1st senior championship match in the first 4 minutes set the ball rolling for Aghada, it would be the 27th minute before Fleming and Aghada would score again. In between Dohenys hit three points. But how different it could have been with Pearse O’Neill making a surging run at goal from fifty meters, only for the keeper to save a point blank shot to turn the game in the sixth minute. A number of chances were missed by both sides in a hard fought spell. Flemings afore mentioned point as the half closed spurred on Aghada. Trevor and Stephen O’Keeffe added two more minors before Dohenys finished the scoring on the 32 minute to leave Aghada a point to the good at short whistle.

Aghada again opened the better when Stephen O’Keeffe scored but from the kick out Dohenys got it back they added a second the level the game before the score of the game young Fleming from out on the sideline and inside the 14 pointed an impossible shot to lead again. Just at the three quarter stage Dohenys levelled again. Then up stood Pearse, an other mighty run and a point to lead again and Aghada were looking good with ten minutes left on the clock. Aghada came again this time trigger got inside his man and was bearing down on goal a pass to the free Melvin and a goal looked certain but alas Dohenys got back to seal the hole.
This was the turning point as Dohenys went down and scored 4 unanswered points in a two minute spell.
Stephen O’Keeffe got one back with four minutes left. Pearse again made one of his surging runs but again the keeper some how kept it out. The Dohenys got the last score but all is not lost yet.

Thur 22nd Feb Senior Football league (Kelleher Shield) Aghada 0-6 Bishopstown 1-6

Aghada opened this years Kelleher Shield campaign with a defeat to Bishopstown under lights and water in Rostellan last Friday night. In terrible underfoot conditions, Aghada got a terrible start and found themselves 1- 2 to no score behind after just 5 minutes. On such a bad night, it was a huge lead to give away and one they never got back. Still at the interval, there was only the goal between them after points from Eoin O’Neill, Brian Morrissey and a Trevor O’Keeffe free in reply to a further point from the city men. The rain came down for the second half to make things worse and it was no great surprise that both teams only managed 3 points each in the second period. Aghada did have a decent chance of a goal, but John O’Connor elected to take his point with just the ‘keeper to beat. 2 Ger Melvin frees were Aghada’s other scores and at the finish Bishopstown had the spoils by virtue of that early goal. John Galvin Senior Football Tournament.

Bishopstown invited our Senior football team to take part in a blitz style competition last weekend. 5 other teams took part also – St. Vincents, Bishopstown, C.I.T., U.C.C. and St. Finbarrs. On Saturday Aghada had 2 40 minutes games. They first beat U.C.C. on a 2-4 to 1-4 scoreline and then overcame Bishopstown 1-7 V 0-8. This qualified them for the full 60 minute final against St. Vincents. In this game, played on the Sunday, Vincents scored 2 early goals to gain the ascendancy. In extremely windy and heavy underfoot conditions, making up the deficit was always going to be a difficult task, and last years Intermediate champions held on to garnish the honours. Best for Aghada on the day were Kieran O’Connor, Nigel Berry , who kicked all of Aghada scores from frees. The final score was St. Vincents 2-7 V Aghada 0-7. Aghada used nearly 30 players over the 2 days, which thankfully is a far cry from this time last year, when getting out 15 was a major achievement. The team for the final lined out as follows – Evan Kennedy, John Wall, Billy Hennessy, Alan Morrissey, Tom O’Neill, Kieran O’Connor, John Connolly, Nigel Berry, Aiden Kelleher, Vincent Morrissey, Cormac O’Suilleabhain, , Stephen O’Keeffe, Brian Morrissey, James O’Connell. Subs Used – Pearse O’Neill, Conor Hickey, John O’Connor, Cian Fleming, Richie Good, Charlie Mc Carthy, Other panel used over weekend - Declan Morrissey, Alan Creedon, Ronan Dewane, Eoin O’Neill, Paudie O’Neill, Brendan Crowley, and Colm Power.
