Sat 3rd Nov Minor C county league semi final Aghada 5-9 Aghinagh 5-10

What a game at one minute we were swept a side then we done the sweeping a game that had every thing.

The west cork boys opened with rapid fire scoring 4 points in the opening 5 minute spell.
Eoin Healy settled the nerves with a pointed free when Russell was dragged down after 6 minutes. James Daly and the afore motioned Russell added two more points before the west cork boys scored again. But back they came with a point followed by a goal. Fair play to Aghada they had it back within a minute a goal from the boot of Pádraig Mulry after a peach of a pass for Russell. For the first time in the game Aghada were in control points followed for Willie O’Shea, Healy and Russell to go a point up with. Yet we left scores after us. Then Aghinagh pointed four points in as many minutes to finish the half the way they started. 1-9 to Aghada’s 1-6

On resumption the bold Willie O’ Shea again from a pass from Russell rattled the net to level the game.
But from the kick out Aghinagh goaled and 2 minutes later goaled again. A point from Healy was our reply then on the 42 minute Aghinagh goaled again to go 8 points clear. But how Aghada responded making three changes Giorgio Corigliano, Tommy Dobbyn and Gearóid Murphy started to make a difference. Russell again was the catalyst pointing him before setting Conor Rice up for a tap in goal then scoring one himself before the minute was out. Only a point behind as we entered the last Quarter. With Finbarr Day now operating on the forty Aghada had more options up front a long high ball form Day which the goalie could not handle and Gearóid Murphy was on hand to goal as Aghada went ahead with 10 minutes remaining. Russell Added a point to go three clear as time ran out. Back came Aghinagh with a goal to level it on the 55th minute followed by the winning point 2 minutes later. But how Aghada fought back but were unable to get the vital score to bring the game to extra time.

Sun 23rd Sept Minor C football championship final

Aghada 0-8 Russell Rv 3-5

The final of this year minor football, which was run on a league championship basis, was played in Dungourney on Sunday morning last the 23rd of September. Having finished top of the league on 12pts each Aghada and Russell Rovers went head to head for ultimate honours. Aghada with the advantage of a strong breeze started the better and on 5 minutes full forward Michael Russell opened the scoring with a free after Shane Wall was fouled. 2 minutes later Allister Murphy kicked a nice point after being set up by wing back Eoin Savage, who had a great game at wing back. Another pointed free, this time from Eoin Healy after Russell had been brought down, left Aghada 3pts to no score to the good after quarter of an hour. At the back, Finbarr Day and Aiden O’Connell were defending well, all be it that Rovers were a bit wasteful with their kicks at goal. They did open their account with a point from play on 17 minutes and then had a period of dominance but could not add to their rally. With 5 minutes to go to the break James Daly was fouled when clean through on goal, but the resulting penalty from Murphy flew over the bar for a point. Willie O’Shea battled hard to win possession a couple of minutes later and another Murphy point was the net result. Rovers scored their second point on the stroke of half time to only trail by 3pts on a 5 V 2 scoreline at the short whistle.

In truth the lead didn’t look enough turning to face the wind. A minute into the second half and it looked worse, when Rovers pounced for their first goal almost from the throw in. Soon after Aghada were grateful to ‘keeper Andrew O’Donoghue who tipped a powerful drive over the bar. As so often happens with Aghada teams however, this team started to play better against the wind. A nice move between Conor Rice and Padraig Mulry, saw Rice point and from the kick out the same player set up O’Shea for a well taken point. More disaster for Aghada on quarter of an hour when the Rovers full forward’s point attempt found itself it the top corner of the net. With ten minutes to go and trailing by 2 points Aghada carved out a great goal chance but O’Shea was fouled when through one on one with the opposition ‘keeper. Aghada had their second penalty, but again it was squandered as Russell saw his shot saved. Aghada were in the ascendancy by now, but were finding it hard to breach a tough Rovers defense. Rovers weathered the rally and finished the stronger scoring three points to Aghada’s one over the closing five minutes. Goals win games as they say, and even taking 2 missed penalty chances into consideration, Russell Rovers still deserved their win, but it was a great effort out of a gallant Aghada outfit. From some strange reason, Aghada were presented with the league cup after finishing second in this league/championship structure while Russell Rovers went home with the championship trophy?? Both teams will advance to County competitions, Aghada in the league, so they will have another chance for some silverware before season end. Aghada Team & scorers –

Tue 4th Sept Minor C football League/championship

Aghada 2-9 Russell rv. 0-13

Having lost narrowly to Glenville the previous Friday, Aghada’s encounter with Russell Rovers became a must win encounter. Played in Rostellan on Tuesday the 4th of September, Rovers started the brighter and would go on to dominate 1st half proceedings. Aghada were fortunate however that on at least 3 occasions the Rovers forwards blazed over the bar when the goal chance was also on. At the other end Cian Fleming missed a few frees for Aghada, before eventually slotting over 2, while Eoin Healy, and a super point from Shane Wall left Aghada trailing at the break on a 7 pts to 4 scoreline. To make matters worse Aghada were reduced to 11 men late in that period when Cian was red carded. It looked like a monumental task for Aghada to dig out the win, but right from the restart you could see an added determination in the Aghada players. For half an hour they ran themselves to a standstill and contested every ball with an intensity that was lacking in the first half. Points from Conor Rice helped get Aghada a foothold, and while Willie O’Shea was unlucky not to goal, the same player set up Allister Murphy moments later and Murphy rattled the Rovers net to put Aghada into the lead for the 1st time. Rovers responded and Aghada were grateful to ‘keeper Andrew O’Donoghue who gave a brilliant display between the posts. He tipped a certain goal over the bar, he also saved a penalty at a crucial time in the match, plus he carried the ball out of defense on a number of occasions to help lift the siege on his goal. Padraig Mulry kicked a fine free for Aghada and then Murphy struck for his second goal, with as cool a finish as you’re likely to see at any level in the country. Still Russell Rovers kept coming at Aghada. Tom Dobbyn, Eoin Savage and Finbarr Day defended heroically and when James Daly kicked a mighty point at the death, it left the Rovers looking for a goal. Try as they might it failed to materialize and Aghada held on for a superb victory. Aghada team & scorers – Andrew O’Donoghue, Aiden O’Connell, Finbarr Day, Eoin Savage, Tom Dobbyn, Conor Rice(0-3,2f), Shane Wall(0-1), Eoin Healy(0-1), Willie O’Shea, Allister Murphy(2-0), Cian Fleming(0-2f), Padraig Mulry(0-1f). Sub Used James Daly (0-1).
