Sat 23th June J F 1 Aghada 2-5 Carrignavar 4-10
Tue 12th June JFL2 Aghada 2-7 Youghal 1-12
|
Aghada’s third team travelled to Youghal on Tuesday last to face the home side’s second outfit in Division 2 of the East Cork football league. Manager Michael Lewis found himself with the bare 15, but the players put up a great performance before finally losing out by only 2 points. The superb Charlie Mc Carthy from corner back and Conor Rice from wing back, were (strangely) the goalscorers on the night. Aghada Team – Patrick Sisk, Charlie Mc Carthy, Liam Morrissey, Dominic Cashman, Conor Rice, Jihn Wall, Aiden O’Connell, Paudie O’Neill, Sean O’Donoghue, Martin Day, Mark Lewis, Allister Murphy, Leonard O’Keeffe, Michael Lewis, Mark O’Brien. |
Mon 28th May JFL1 Aghada 1-8 Midleton 2-16
Aghada’s JB’s bowed out of this years championship when they were beaten by Rathcormack in Lisgoold on last Tuesday night week. Aghada started brightly. Kenneth O’Keeffe playing a bit of big ball for the first time in a few years opened the scoring with a good point. Paudie O’Neill, who impressed at wing forward, doubled the lead on 8 minutes. At the back and despite the best efforts of Shane Wall and Shane Morrissey, Aghada looked a bit porous and were conceding goal chances. Darren Lee, between the posts for Aghada was to have a busy night ahead of himself. It was 2pts to 1 after 10 minutes, but Mark O’Brien kicked a long range effort soon after to restore the 2 point lead. Next, Lee stopped a certain goal when his cat like reflexes tipped a powerful Rover's shot over the bar. 2 minutes later the sides were level on 3 a piece. Not for long with O’Neill getting his second. On 23 minutes the goal the Rathcormack men were threatening all night finally arrived. An unstoppable shot to the top corner finally beat Lee’s despairing full length panther like dive. O’Keeffe set up corner forward Martin Day for the last score of the half to leave the scoreboard at the break 0-5 V 1-3 in favour of Rovers. On the resumption Aghada opened the scoring when Mike Galvin hit a super ball to set up Davy Leahy who tied the scores a minute after the break. Then, more disaster for Aghada. Lee had hardly made it from the half time huddle to between sticks, when he was again picking the ball out of the net. Again it was a well taking goal, which gave the very experienced Aghada stopper no chance. O’Keeffe scored his second point to steady the ship, but Rovers weren’t finished scoring the majors. On 7 minutes a speculative long range shot from Rovers was watched all the way by veteran Lee in the Aghada goal. Unfortunately, for once in the game, his Spiderman like reflexes deserted him and it was only his eyes reacted as the ball sailed in over his head for Rovers 3rd goal. Mike Galvin pointed for Aghada on 11 minutes, but Rovers had 2 from play in reply and the game was slipping from Aghada’s grasp. Manager Michael Lewis overruled his fellow selectors and elected to bring himself on at this stage. To no avail however, as Aghada only managed 2 more points before the end; Anthony Connolly and an excellent point from Eoin O’Donovan. Rovers matched Aghada with 2 points of their own and indeed the Rathcormack men could have had a 4th goal but for the majestic Lee using his disproportionately large thighs to block another close range effort. In the end Rovers were flattered by the 5 point winning margin, but deservedly go through to the next round none the less. Aghada Team and scorers – Darren “Panther” Lee, Shane Morrissey, John Wall, Shane Wall, Alan Walsh, Brendan Hughes, Anthony Connolly(0-1), Mark O’Brien(0-1), David Condon, Paudie O’Neill (0-2), Kenneth O’Keeffe (0-2), David Leahy(0-1), Brian Walsh, Mike Galvin(0-2), Martin Day(0-1). Subs Used – Aiden Cotter, Michael Lewis, Eoin O’Donovan(0-1), Mark Galvin, Christopher Kelly. |

Sun 29th April JFL 2 Aghada LOST TO Carrigtwohill
| Aghada’s U21 footballers produced a great performance on Friday
night last in Cloyne to surprise the highly fancied team from Ballymacoda.
Playing into the breeze in the first half, we started the better and
a Cian Fleming free got us off the mark. Scores were hard to come by,
but a great goal in the 18th minute by Cian gave us back the lead. O’Neills
responded and kicked 4 points to get back in front, before a very good
Aghada move resulted in Kenneth O’ Brien finishing the ball to
the net for a great goal. Half time all square. Cian kicked 2 great
points from play at the start of the half to keep us in touch and a
Davy Condon goal on 40 minutes got us back level. Then Liam Day produced
a wonder goal on 43 minutes when he hit a screamer from 25 yards to
the top corner. O'Neills responded well and 3 un-answered points left
us a point down as we headed for the last few minutes. A Cian free drew
us level and going into injury time, a great spot by Alan Morrissey
saw the keeper off his line and he lobbed him from 45 yards to give
Aghada the wining score. 4 more minutes were played but 2 great catches
by Evan Kennedy in goal and stout defending from Declan Morrissey meant
Aghada held on for a deserved victory and now meet Russell Rovers in
the semi-final.

The juniors are out of this year's championship after losing to Glenbower on Monday night last in Shanagarry. Aghada were down a few players through injury and work commitments, but they really took the game to their more fancied opponents. Nigel Berry and Sean O'Donoghue were flying at midfield, while up front Shane Scanlon and Eoin O'Neill were firing on all cylinders and were ably assisted with good support play from Finbarr Day, Charlie Mc Carthy and Liam Day. Aghada raced into a 2-1 to no score lead while playing into the wind, O'Neill and Scanlon the goal scorers. The second goal really sparked the Killeagh men into life and they quickly hit 4 points in as many minutes to get back in the game. It was even stephen from here to the break although Aghada 'keeper Brian Wall was called on to make a string of fine saves. At Halftime it was Aghada 2-6, Glenbower 0-7. In the first round proper 2 goals from Youghal at the start of the second half cost Aghada dearly. If Aghada could avoid that scenario this time around they would surely progress. Alas, it happened again, and Glenbower struck for two goals inside the open 6 minutes of the half and now led by a point. In what was an entertaining game of football, both sides matched each other score for score from here to the end. When O'Neill pointed the last of his 1-7 personal tally, a draw looked on the cards, but Glenbower attacked again and scored the winning point a minute later to put Aghada out of the championship. Aghada Team and scorers - Brian Wall, Liam Morrissey, Michael Morrissey, Alan Creedon, Richie Condon, Paudie Wall, Declan Morrissey, Sean O'Donoghue, Nigel Berry (captain), Stephen Gilroy, Finbarr Day(0-1), Shane Scanlon(1-2), Eoin O'Neill(1-7, 5f), Liam Day, Charlie Mc Carthy. Aghada went under in the first round of this years Junior A championship, when they lost to Youghal in Ballymacoda on Saturday last. A strong breeze blew straight down the pitch and Aghada playing with the elements led at the interval by 7 points to 3. The pick of Aghada’s scores coming from Cian Fleming with 2 fine efforts from the left wing. Two incidents either side of the break would prove to have a big bearing on the final result. Just before halftime, Aghada midfielder Richard Good was sent off and then within 3 minutes of the restart, a misjudged bounce of the ball, gifted Youghal the perfect start to the second half. Youghal’s next score was also a goal and suddenly 10 minutes into the second period, Youghal had a one point lead. Aghada tried hard to rally. Trevor O’Keeffe, Ger Melvin and Vincent Morrissey impressed for Aghada throughout, and each of these players got on the scoreboard, but to no avail as Youghal tacked on 6 points to deservedly win on a 4 point margin. Aghada team and scorers – Brian Wall, Richard Condon, Michael Morrissey, Liam Morrissey, Alan Creedon, Trevor O’Keeffe(0-1), Declan Morrissey, Richard Good, Cormac O’Suilleabhain, Colm Power, Eoin O’Neill(0-2), Cian Fleming (0-2), Vincent Morrissey (0-3), Nigel Berry, Gerard Melvin (0-3, 2f). Subs used Stephen Gilroy, Shane Scanlon, David O’Hanlon. |
Mon 12th Mar Junior Football league 1 Aghada 0-9 Glenville 0-4
Sun 25th Feb Junior Football league 1 Aghada 0-12 Cobh 2-8
|
Goals are proving the Achilles heel of this junior side so far this season and last Sunday morning in Cobh was no different as two first half goals gave Aghada a huge uphill struggle they never fully recovered from. Aghada, with the aid of a strong wind, started well, and Alan Creedon and Trevor O’Keeffe impressed in the wing forward berths. Leading 4 points to one after 20 minutes, 2 goals in the space of 5 minutes changed the complexion of the game. At the short whistle it was 2-2 V 0-5 in favour of Cobh. Richard Good came to midfield for Aghada and made a notable difference there, although a broken collar bone forced Aiden Kelleher out of the game not long after the restart. Aghada actually played better against the wind and kicked 5 points in 20 minutes. Cobh had only 2 points in reply and with 10 minutes to play the sides were level. Aghada then went infront, when Good surged through for point with 5 minutes to play. Cobh rallied again and two points in as many minutes gave them back a 1 point lead. Then Aghada had a great chance of a goal when substitute Gerard Melvin shot narrowly wide from close range. A Trevor O’Keeffe free restored parity, but that was as good as it got, as the Cobh men kicked the final 2 points of the game to take the league points. Aghada team and scorers – Patrick Sisk, Richard Good (0-1), Stephen Gilroy, Michael Morrissey, Paudie Wall, John Wall(0-1), Declan Morrissey, Nigel Berry, Aiden Kelleher, Trevor O’Keeffe(0-3, 2f), Cormac O’Suilleabhain, Alan Creedon (0-1), Shane Scanlon, Eoin O’Neill(0-3), Cian Fleming(3,2f) . Subs Used Liam Morrissey, Gerard Melvin, Charlie Mc Carthy.

Sat 17th Feb Senior football game Aghada beat Dingle
Fri 16th Feb Junior Football league 1 Aghada 0-9 Carrigtwohill 2-7
The Junior A’s are still waiting for their first league points of the season after a strong second half showing, by Carrig earned the spoils at Rostellan on Friday night last. Colm Power opened the scoring inside a minute, when he pointed after being put through by Cormac O’Suilleabháin. Carrig struck back with a long distance goal and followed it up with a point, to lead after the opening 10 minutes. Trevor O’Keeffe pointed a free, but Carrig quickly cancelled this with one of their own. On 20 minutes, Shane Scanlon went for goal, but saw his shot rebound off the crossbar. The same player did collect the rebound and slotted a point. Hard working wing back Michael Morrissey, then played in Charlie McCarthy and after he was pulled down, O’Keeffe had another to leave just a point between the sides at the break. Aghada 0-4 V Carrigtwohill 1-2. Aghada missed a lot of chances in the closing stages of the half and would regret this as Carrigtwohill came out a different side after the break. Dominating the midfield exchanges, Carrig kicked 1 -5 in the opening quarter without reply from Aghada, to open up a commanding lead. Whether they pulled up at this stage or Aghada rallied with O’Sulleabháin now working hard at midfield, its hard to say. But Aghada kicked 5 unanswered points in the closing 12 minutes and tested the Carrig keeper a couple of times in this period, but in the end it was in vain as Carrigtwohill held on for a deserved 4 point win. Others to play well for Aghada were David O’Hanlon, Liam Morrissey and Aiden Kelleher. Aghada team and scorers – Darren Lee, Richard Condon, John Wall, Liam Morrissey, Michael Morrissey, Aiden Kelleher, David O’Hanlon, Nigel Berry, Trevor O’Keeffe(0-4,2f), Kenneth O’Brien, Eoin O’Neill(0-1), Charlie Mc Carthy, Shane Scanlon(0-1), Cormac O’Sulleabháin, Colm Power(0-2). Subs Used – Paudie Wall, Davy Leahy, Alan Creedon (0-1).

Another late goal left Aghada still looking for their 1st win in this years league, when they lost narrowly to Fr.O’Neills at Ballymacoda on Saturday last. In what was a close contest between 2 evenly matched teams, a goal was always going to be the decisive score and coming 4 minutes from the end, made it all the more so. After a lively opening quarter Aghada led 4 points to 2 and had 4 different scorers on the board – Trevor O’Keeffe, Vincent Morrissey, Mark Lewis and Cian Fleming. The gap was reduced down to one before a clever reverse pass from the excellent Nigel Berry set up Eoin O’Neill to restore Aghada’s 2 point advantage. O’Neills responded with 2 scores of their own and it was all square at the interval. Aghada started the second period the better with Morrissey tacking on two more nice points to his and Aghada’s tally. A fitter O’Neill’s outfit then started to dominate and a brace of points tied up the match again. Fleming restored Aghada’s 1 point advantage with a fine point on 20 minutes and Aghada, with Michael and Declan Morrissey to the fore in defence, kept that lead until the goal 4 minutes from the end. Aghada gave up possession too easily at one end and O’Neills came the length of the pitch to give ‘keeper Darren Lee no chance to prevent the winning goal. Aghada Team and scorers – Darren Lee, David O’Hanlon, Stephen Gilroy, Michael Morrissey, John Wall, Aiden Kelleher, Declan Morrissey, Trevor O’Keeffe (0-1), Nigel Berry, Vincent Morrissey (0-3), E.O’Neill (0-1), Charlie Mc Carthy, Colm Power, Mark Lewis (0-1), Cian Fleming (0-2). Subs Used – Kenneth O’Brien, Richard Condon. |
Fri 2nd Feb Junior Football league 2 Aghada 1-1 Dungourney 1-7
Our JB’s faced a stiff opener to this season’s league campaign when they hosted Dungourney's first team on Friday night the 2nd of February in Rostellan. Aghada failed to score in the 1st half and trailed by a goal and 4 points at the break. This was despite an over worked defence where Michael Morrissey and the returning Davy Hanlon stood out in the corner back positions. O’Hanlon was playing his first game in a year and it only took 50 seconds to see him in his customary position of sliding in on his knees to make a tackle! Aghada improved in the second half. Ken O’Brien and Tony Wall combined to set up Martin Day for a well taken goal and Tony also had a point with the Dungourney men kicking 4 points in the second half to take a deserved victory. Aghada Team and Scorers – P.Sisk, M.Morrissey, S.Gilroy, D.O’Hanlon, D.Hartnett, D.Morrissey, A.Walsh, S. O’Donoghue, C.Mc Carthy, A.Connolly, K.O’Brien, B.Walsh, F.Day, T.Wall(0-1), M.Day(1-0). Subs Used – M.Lewis, C.Falvey, L.Morrissey, D.Kidney, L.Curtin, L.Day, E.O’Donovan, A.O’Connell. |
Wed 31st Jan Junior Football league 1 Aghada 2-7 Bride Rv 1-11
| Rostellan looked its best tonight with the new lights when we entertained
Bride Rv in this Junior 1 fixture. A large crowd enjoyed this entertaining
game. The Rovers opened the scoring with a point and looked good, slowly Aghada got into the game with Nigel Berry and Adian Kelleher controlling the middle of the park. A fine point from young Cian Fleming opened our account. Colm Power followed with another and when Fleming found the net in his 1st junior game we looked good. While we lived on our wits the as the Rovers came close to goals we still went in at half time 1-6 to 0-3 1-4 of that from the boot of Fleming. On resumption Fleming was again on song with a minor to stretch our lead. Bride Rv upped a gear and the heavy training told on Aghada as the rovers pointed 6 in a row. Then with minutes remaining Fleming popped up laying on a great ball to full forward Shane Scannell for a great goal to put Aghada ahead again. Minutes later Scannell won a free which Cian converted to go 2 points up as time ran out. Then with the last kick of the ball Bride Rovers got a soft goal to win at the death. John Wall, Vincent Morrissey, impressed as did Richie Goode. Team Brian Wall (Inch) Michael Morrissey, Steven Gilroy, Liam Morrissey, Charlie McCarthy, John Wall, Declan Morrissey Nigel Berry, Adian Kelleher Vincent Morrissey, Richie Good, Colm Power (0-2) Paudie O’Neill, Shane Scannell (1-0) Cian Fleming (1-5) subs used Davie Creedon, Richard Condon. |
