JUNIOR HURLING 2007

Sun 22nd July Junior B Hurling Championship replay

Aghada 1-4 Carrignavar 1-7

Disappointment for the B grade hurlers when Carrignavar dumped them out of this year’s championship after a poor showing in Lisgoold on Sunday the 22nd. Corner forward Shane wall opened the scoring for Aghada in the 4th minute. Carrignavar, with the wind at their backs would dominate for much of the half and after 6 minutes ‘keeper Mickey Lewis saved well in a one on one situation. Minutes later and the sides were level after a Carrignavar point. In a poor game, scorers were hard to come by and against the run of play Aghada got the next 2. First Anthony Connolly pointed after a solo run. Then Finbarr Day worked hard to get the ball into the danger area where Wall was on hand to finish to the net with an excellent ground pull. 1-2 V 0-1 against the wind and almost half time things were looking good, but Carrignavar had other ideas. Instantly they scored a fine goal of their own and then pointed twice to hit the front at half time and led by a single point. Turning to play with the wind, Aghada had every chance, but not for want of effort, they never got going at all in the second period. 2 points was all they could manage for the half. One came from Paul Kilbane after 6 minutes and the other 3 minutes from time from a Finbarr Day free after Connolly was fouled. Carrignavar for their part hit 4 points in this second half and emerged as deserving winners by 3 points. Aghada team and Scorers –

Sat 14th July Junior B Hurling Aghada 0-12 Carrignavar 1-9

After dominating for most of the second half, Aghada will feel a little disappointed not to have advanced to round 2 of this year’s championship. Played in Riverstown on Saturday night last, the first half was a different affair, with Carrignavar looking the livelier outfit, they jumped into a 2 point lead. Mark Lewis and Aiden Cotter pointed in quick succession for Aghada and it was 2 apiece after 5 minutes. A minute later ‘keeper Mickey Lewis made a fine save diving low to his right to tip a certain goal around the post. Carrig did point the resulting ’65, but 2 points from a Finbarr Day free and Anthony Connolly from play gave Aghada the lead with 10 played. Paul Kilbane was back in the green jersey for the first time in hurling since coming back from Oz. He might have hit 10 times more players than sliothars, but the Bana spirit was there in spades and spread through to the rest of his colleagues, who hooked, hassled, and worked tirelessly for the evening. A fine point from Connolly mid way through the first half was typical of a number of Aghada scores where hard graft when not in possession, eventually led to a dispossession and then a score. Beside Kilbane at midfield, Alan Walsh hurled very well for the hour, but Carrignavar were causing problems for the defence and for the remainder of the half outscored Aghada 5 points to 2 to lead 8 V 6 at the short whistle.
The second half was a different affair, especially after the impressive Connolly put the shackles on the Carrignavar centre back, who had cleaned up a lot of ball in the first half. Two Finbarr Day frees had the sides level 8 minutes into the half. 2 minutes later Carrignavar then scored what would be their only score up to the last minute, when they pointed from play. Mark Lewis and Day had a couple of goal chances but both went a begging as did quite a few opportunities for points. Points did come from Alan Creedon, 2 Finbarr free’s and impressive substitute John Wall to give Aghada a 3 point lead with time running out. Carrignavar came again and when they were awarded a close in free, they had no choice but to go for goal, which they did with success to tie up the game. One more minute was played, but neither side fashioned a chance before the referee brought proceedings to an end with both teams living to fight another day. Aghada Team and scorers –
