Sat 6th Oct

Premier Intermediate Hurling Regulation play off

Aghada 1-17 Mallow 1-11

Aghada go into the draw for next years Premier Intermediate hurling draw again by the via the drop zone game for the second year running.
Fielding a much changed team from the championship lost to Blarney seemed to do the trick for the seasiders. Mallow had the better in all exchanges for the 1st nine minutes when the attacketed at will and were leading 0-2 to a mighty Trevor Point . Trevor added an other one this time from a free. Stephen O’Keeffe then started a great move form the centre of the field which finished to the net by John Connelly. Now Aghada took the game by the scruff of the neck and drove home their advantage. Pearse O’Neill thundered into the game with three points on the run in as many minutes to see Aghada well ahead as we entered the second Quarter. With O’Keeffe and Melvin on top at centre field Aghada had plenty of ball to work with. Points followed from Vincent Morrissey, Stephen O’Keeffe, Trevor (free after again Pearse went through and brought of a great save from the goalie) while Brendan Crowley had the last say with a mighty minor. To out score Mallow 0-4 to 0-3 in the second Quarter. It was not all Aghada’s way, Mallow forced a great save from Day and how the rebound stayed out is any ones guess. Half time score 1-9 to 0-5

Again Mallow started the Better three minors in a row and they were back in the game big time. Trevor settled the nerves with two points. Mallow pointed again to which O’Keeffe again replied. Now it was tit for tat Mallow answered two points from Trevor before entering the last ten minutes Aghada started to pull away Points from Vincent and Trevor (2) forced Mallow for goals. Martin Day was equal to a 21 yard one but at the death Mallow goaled from one thirty yards. All in all a good game of hurling played in July Weather

Wed 23rd May Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship

losers group Aghada 1-8 Blarney 1-13

Aghada had no luck at the backdoor either in this years hurling championship and now face another relegation playoff to preserve Premier Intermediate hurling status for next year. Played in splendid conditions in Riverstown on Wednesday last, Aghada got off to a great start and led 3 points to no score after 10 minutes. The Aghada points had come via a free from Trevor O’Keeffe and 2 over the shoulder strikes from Vincent Morrissey, one off each side. Blarney opened their account with a free, but a minute latter, a strong bat from the excellent Billy Hennessy at full back, saw Brian Morrissey finish a fine move with another Aghada point. That ended Aghada’s period of dominance however as Blarney slowly started to get on top. 3 unanswered points brought them level on 20 minutes. In this time they also hit a few wides, plus dropped a number of difficult balls on top of ‘keeper Martin Day, who dealt superbly with them. On 22 minutes Blarney had the lead with the 1st of 3 converted ‘65s. Trevor O’Keeffe levelled when a long distance sideline from Mike Galvin rebounded off the upright, and the corner forward doubled on the rebound and flashed the sliothar just over the bar. 2 more 65’s from the Muskerry men gave them a 7 points to 5 interval lead. Aghada had missed a couple of easy frees in that half, a costly problem, that would remain with them for the entire game. In fact the second half became a story of frees. All Aghada scores in this period were placed balls, but other placed balls went astray. On the other side Blarney were unerring from dead balls and 5 of their 7 scores came from frees, at least 4 of which were unnecessarily conceded by Aghada. The decisive moment came with 7 minutes to play. Blarney got a goal from what looked like to everyone in the ground bar the referee, to be a square goal. Already 3 points clear at this stage, the goal made it 6 and gave them the impetus to hit 2 more frees for a commanding 8 point lead. Aghada did try and fight back, with Brendan Crowley, Kieran O’Connor and Brian Morrissey working tirelessly for the cause. Mike Galvin buried a 30 meter free to the net to reduce the deficit, but that was to be the last score of the match and Blarney were through to the 3rd round. Aghada Team & Scorers –

Thur 17th May Premier Intermediate Hurling League
Aghada 1-11Ballincollig, 1-8

Aghada took home the points from this league game played in Rostellan on Thursday night last. Mike Galvin in a new position at midfield opened the scoring with a long range point. Ballincollig replied with interest and hit 1-1 without reply, before Vincent Morrissey hit a nice point with only 5 minutes gone on the clock. This high scoring opening wasn’t a sign of things to come however and scores dried up for both sides, with a lot of wides being hit at either end of the pitch. Aghada pointed 3 times in the closing 10. A Trevor O’Keeffe free, another Galvin special and Vinny with his second with 2 from Ballincollig in response gave the Muskerry men a slender 1 point lead at the interval. They were 2 points to the good soon after the break. On 6 minutes Vincent Morrissey riffled home a great goal from a narrow angle to give Aghada the lead for the 1st time since the opening minute. This score seemed to kick-start Aghada into life, and with Ronan Dewane flying at centre back, they dominated proceedings for the rest of the game. Still there was a lot of chances went a begging, but Aghada hit 6 points from here to the end, with only 4 coming in reply from Ballincollig. The pick of Aghada scores again coming from Mike Galvin with 2 more long distance strikes. In the end Aghada were deserving winners with 3 points to spare. Aghada Team and Scorers –

Sat 12th May Premier Intermediate Hurling League
Aghada 1-10 Youghal, 1-17

short a few regulars, Aghada travelled to Copper alley last Saturday to play Youghal in the intermediate league. Aghada started with the breeze and there was nothing between the sides at the start, with Youghal leading 4 points to 3 after 10 minutes. Youghal started to get on top, especially in their half backline and when they goaled after 25 minutes they had built up a 1-9 V 0-5 lead. 2 placed balls from Aghada versus 1 by Youghal, left the halftime score 1-10 Youghal, 0-7 Aghada. Turning to face the breeze, Aghada got off to a good start for the second half. When Trevor O’Keeffe buried a 21m free earned by Stephen O’Keeffe there was only 2 points between the sides and 12 minutes gone in the second. That was as good as it got however, as Youghal upped the tempo and hit 6 points in the next 15 minutes with only two coming in response from Aghada. After that, the game petered out to its inevitable conclusion and Youghal took home the points. John Connolly at wing back was possibly the pick of the Aghada players on the night. Sun 6th May Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship

Aghada 1-9 Carrigtwohill 3-13

1978 in the semi final of the East Cork Junior championship was the last time Carrig beat Aghada in a championship hurling game and it was only just. How different it was tonight. Niall McCarthy and Trevor exchanged points from placed balls in the 1st minute Mac stretched Carrigs lead a minute later again from a placed ball. 2 minutes later cork minor Robert White goaled when he caught the ball on the edge of the square. With the game only 5 minutes old Carrig lead by 1-3 to Trevor’s point. Now came Aghada’s best spell 5 unanswered points in as many minutes followed from Pearse O’Neill , Vincent Morrissey, Trevor (65), Stephen O’Keeffe and another trigger free. This brought us level for the second time and Aghada looked good. Little did we think that it would be 27 minutes before we scored again. In between Carrig scored 8 minors with out reply. Sub Brian Morrissey pointing on the 42 minute braking Aghada’s duck when he replaced the influence J P O’ Connor (injured early in the game but hung on till at half time).
A Billy Hennessy point followed by another Morrissey point was Aghada’s lot until Kieran O’Connor goaled as time was up. Carrig was able to rack up 2-1 in between. The only ray of hope was young Conor Rice in his 1st championship start. Despite Niall McCarthy racking up 0-8 three from play, the Kilkenny man Mike Galvin acquitted himself well. We now face Blarney in the back door round. what can a team do with only two weeks to perpare (11 of this team played senior football against the Barrs) we will be back.

Cork Premier IHC

Magical McCarthy inspires Carrigtwohill

NO fireworks to write about at Castlemartyr last night as last season’s defeated finalists Carrigtwohill opened their Evening Echo Premier Cork Co IHC campaign on a triumphant note against Aghada. Splendid performances from NiaII McCarthy, Jason Barrett and young Robert White spurred Carrigtwohill to exciting heights and left Aghada floundering. Cork’s senior player McCarthy scored eight points, three from play Barrett was a rock of dependability at Centre back, while White scored two Cracking goals as Carrig won pulling up Although Aghada took an early lead With a Trevor O’Keeffe pointed a free, it soon became apparent that Carrigtwohill had no intention of playing second fiddle on this Occasion. two successful free convet4lons by McCarthy and a rocket of a goal from White, after four minutes of play, powered them into the lead and In fairness Aghada did manage to claw their way back into contention for a time and five points without reply brought them level after the opening quarter. But then the well dramatically dried up for Aghada who did not score again a period of 26 minutes. Carrig. with McCarthy in swashbuckling form on the 40, took the game by the scruff of the neck and led at half time 1-8 to 0-6 After the resumption, with the wind to their backs, Carrigtwohill continued to pile on the pressure with McCarthy scoring two points in a devastating three minute spell. A rampant Carrigtwohill side was 1—11 to 0-6 in front before Brian Morrissey finally succeeded in ending Aghada’s barren scoring spell when he pointed in the 42nd minute. Aghada, with farther points from wing—back Billy Hennessy and Morrissey again, reduced the deficit to six points entering the closing stages. Then Carrigtwohill stunned their opponents with two superb goals from Michael Barry and White. It was all over following those strikes from Barry and White and the only crumb of consolation Aghada received was a late goal from corner-forward Kieran O’Connor.

Scores for Carrig ; R. White 2-1, M Barry 1-0, N McCarthy 0-8 (5frees) B Lordan 0-2, M O’Riordan, D Collins 0-1 each
Aghada; K O’Connor 1-0, T O’Keeffe 0-3 (all frees), B Morrissey 0-2, S O’Keeffe, P O’Neill, V Morrissey 0-1 each

Sat 28th April I H L Aghada 2-18 Watergrasshill 2-8

Aghada had a good warm up game for their championship clash with Carrig, when they took the spoils in a good game of hurling on Saturday last. It was free flowing and fast moving as Aghada led at the break on a 10 points versus 1-3 scoreline. The pick of Aghada’s points came for Mike Galvin with a huge free from deep in his own half. Aghada always looked like the winners when John O Connor goaled soon after the restart after being put through by Brian Morrissey. 8 more points followed, the pick of this bunch being a Trevor O’Keeffe score from out on the left sideline. Watergrasshill hit 1- 5 in reply as well as bringing a fine save out of Aghada ‘keeper Martin Day. In the end Aghada were deserving winners.Aghada team and Scorers –
