Sun 2nd July u21 football championship

Aghada 3-7Carrigtwohill 3 -8

Although this was the semi-final of this competition, it was also Aghada’s 1st game and unfortunately, Aghada were very unlucky to find themselves on the wrong end of a 1 point difference in the scoreline. In what was a great game of football, played in ideal conditions in Rostellan, Aghada took the game to their opponents from the start. Wayward shooting at this early stage however, was going to prove very costly in the long run. Carrigtwohill were far more economical with their attacks and from no more than 3 attempts had registered a goal and a point in the first 10 minutes. The goal coming from the penalty spot. Aghada continued to dominate but saw more point chances go a begging, as well as two goal attempts from Colm Power and energetic midfielder Charlie Mc Carthy. In fact there was 20 minutes gone before Aghada had their first score. Wing back Declan Morrissey, won possession around the middle of the field and kicked a long ball to corner forward Shane Scanlon. He fisted the ball across the square, where the other corner forward, Martin Day, ran in to palm to the net. On 26 minutes the sides were level, when Tony Wall pointed after a good run from Colm Power. Back came Carrigtwohill with 2 points of their own, but then on the stroke of half time, a good run from Cian Fleming, allied to a fortunate bobble, saw the young wing forward crash home a great goal. Half Time Score Aghada 2-2 V Carrigtwohill 1-3.
The second half turned out to be a much different affair, with Carrigtwohill, now becoming the dominant side, and the Aghada forwards now living off scraps. Carrig pointed, but from the kick out, centre forward Colm Power scored a fine individual goal. 5 minutes later though, Carrigtwohill had a major of their own, when Aghada ‘keeper Evan Kennedy misjudged a Carrig free. He made up from it soon after, with a great save, but Carrig, still in the ascendancy, hit the front again when they tacked on 2 more points from frees. Then came Aghada’s rally. Martin Day set up Tony Wall for a point. 2 minutes later the same player was fouled and duly converted. A minute later Shane Scanlon fielded a great ball and turned to point with his left leg. ‘Keeper Kennedy than saved a point and from the resulting clearance, Tony pointed another free. Suddenly from being a point down, Aghada were 3 points clear and looking like winners again with only 5 minutes to go. Carrig came again however and a point from play was quickly followed by a great goal. Now it was Aghada who needed a goal. Martin Day saw a great effort just tipped over the bar with a minute to play. Aghada now mounted one last attack to try and find the equaliser, but it came to nothing, and Carrigtwohill held on for the victory. Aghada Team and Scorers –
