MINOR HURLING 2006

Thur 13th July Minor B hurling championship

Aghada 2-9 Fr. O'Neills 1-14

Aghada minors were desperately unlucky not to get a least a draw from this championship first round, but they can take great heart from their performance over the hour. Played in Cloyne on Thursday last, this was a great game of hurling, with some top notch scores from both sides. Aghada full forward Finbarr Day opened the scoring from a free. This came after excellent midfielder Dave Leahy was fouled. O’Neills replied a minute later. Leahy was involved in Aghada’s next 2 scores also. First he pointed himself after Cian Fleming set him up. Then he started a move that also involved Eoin Healy, Finbarr and eventually Cian for his first point. O’Neills were more than matching Aghada however and led by 5 points to 3 after 25 minutes. This was despite Trojan efforts from Andrew O’Donoghue, James Daly and Conor Rice. The Aghada forwards were working equally as hard including young corner forwards Shane wall and Geroid Murphy. Cian Fleming scored a super individual point and then lion hearted Eoin Healy was fouled for Finbarr to point his second free. O’Neills had 3 from play in the closing stages to leave the half time score Aghada 5pts V O’Neills 7pts.
Ronan Sheehan scored a fine point after just a minute to open Aghada’s second half account, but O’Neill's had a free and one from play in reply. On 7 minutes, Rory Walsh, who impressed at wing back was fouled. Captain and centre back, Davy Condon drove in a mighty free which Cian Fleming caught. Aghada’s man of the match, then turned a rifled an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. The sides were level. But not for long. 2 minutes later a great clearance from Alan Creedon found its way to the ever dangerous Finbarr, who in turn released Cian for his second goal of the night. When Finbarr converted another Healy earned free, Aghada were motoring well. Back came O’Neills again with four points, 2 from play and two huge long distance frees and the sides were level again with less than 10 minutes to play. Then disaster struck for Aghada, when the defence tried to leave a ball run wide, but instead the O’Neills forwards rescued it and pounced for a goal. ‘Keeper John O’Brien, who was coolness personified between the posts for Aghada could do nothing to prevent the goal. Now it was Aghada who needed a comeback. Evan Kennedy was playing his heart out at midfield, while inside him on the wing Aiden O’Connell was constantly involved in the game. Another good move involving Healy and Wall, set up Cian for a point, but O’Neills responded instantly with a super point of their own. With time running out Ronan Sheehan was fouled and Finbarr pointed again. 2 minutes left, 2 points down, Aghada came in search of a goal, but although they came very close on a couple of occasions, they were unable to raise the green flag they needed. In the end O’Neills held on for the victory, but manager Fergal Condon can be proud of the mighty effort his young side put in. Aghada Team and scorers –
