Aghada 1-4 St. Catherines 2-11

Aghada’s JB footballers bowed out of this year’s championship at the first hurdle last Tuesday week. Played at the splendid Lisgoold venue, Aghada’s third string were always under pressure against St. Catherines 1st team. Playing with the aid of the breeze in the 1st half, Aghada struggled to create scoring chances and 2 Michael Lewis points were all they could muster in the first half. St. Catherines had 5 points on the board at the interval, despite the best efforts of the Walsh brothers – Brian and Alan in the full back line, and the impressive Shane Morrissey at wing back. The saints continued to dominate after the break and two goals put them in an unassailable lead. Points from Paudie O’Neill, Alan Creedon, as well as a well taken goal from Alan Aherne, after being set up by Aiden Cotter, helped to stem the tide, but in the end, Catherines were comfortable winners. Patrick O’Connor, Dominic Cashman (when introduced) and Colm Power did impress for Aghada on an otherwise disappointing night in Shanagarry. Aghada Team –

Sat 18th Mar JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

AGHADA 1-8 GLANMIRE 0-1

Unusually it was the Junior A footballers that led the club into championship action for 2006 and they put the best leg forward with a comprehensive victory over Glanmire. In truth the scoreboard does not reflect the game at all as the over riding factor in this contest of the second string outfits was the gale force wind which blew straight down the Pilmore field. Indeed a Mark Lewis free 10 minutes into the second half, with Aghada against the wind, gave Aghada a 7 point to no score lead and for probably the first time in the game, they looked favourites to win. When the same player goaled 2 minutes later, it put the game out of reach of Glanmire. The first half had been a different story. Glanmire, elected to play into the gale, but still looked the better side in the opening half. They kept possession well, and caused problems for the Aghada defence, but found it impossible to kick a score into the wind. At the other end Aghada were making little or no headway. Captain Richard Good did lead the way with a point on 7 minutes, but it was over 10 minutes later before wing back Alan Morrissey kicked Aghada’s second. Worringly for Aghada they only managed 2 more points for the half, A Stephen O’Keeffe free, & Lewis from play. 4 points to no score at the break simply didn’t look good enough.
The most important score of the game came 1 minute into the second half however. Outstanding midfielder Tom O’Neill surged through to kick a point for Aghada. It seemed to convince all around him that they could take on Glanmire , the wind and anything else they had to in this second half. Brian Morrissey, who would have a storming second half at wing forward, kicked another point a minute later. Then came Lewis’s scores and Aghada were flying. The 2 Wall twins at full and centre back were well on top of things, while Conor Hickey, Nigel Berry and O’Neill helped secure the vast majority of possession at midfield. Glanmire’s only score came on 20 minutes, when they ratteled the crossbar, before the ball went over for a point. They did have another goal chance, but other than that, the Aghada defence limited them to difficult long range shots at goal. Fittingly, it was Stephen O’Keeffe, who excelled throughout, that kicked the last point and Aghada were through to the 3rd round. Aghada team & scorers –

Aghada 4-11 Glanmire 1-14

Pride of place for last weekend must go to the Junior B Footballers who staged a remarkable recovery to beat Glanmire in the Division 2 Junior league. Short of numbers and trailing 1-11 to 5pts at the break, this Sunday morning fixture looked done and dusted. In fairness to the Aghada lads though, they stuck at it. 2 goals from Anthony Connolly put them right back in it, and when Liam Curtin stitched a beauty to the roof of the net for the third goal with just minutes remaining, Aghada had the lead for the first time. Selector/Player Mark Crowley made sure of the points in injury time, when after the most unbelievable miss of all time, he recovered to back heel to the net with the last action of the game. Others to impress were Tony Wall, Alan Walsh. Paudie O’Neill and the wiley Michael Lewis at corner forward. Final score Aghada 4-11 V Glanmire 1-14.

Aghada 0-10 Cobh 0-10

On Friday night last the Junior A’s played out a draw with Cobh under lights in Rostellan in Division 1 of the football league. A good lively game of football, saw both sides kick some fine scores. Cobh led by the minimum at half time, but a bright opening to the second half saw Aghada take a two point lead with 10 minutes to go. Cobh were well on top at the finish and but for some poor shooting could have sneaked the win, but fully deserved the 2 points they kicked and a share of the spoils. Final score Aghada 0-10 V Cobh 0-10.Aghada were well served by Darren Lee in goals, Stephen Gilroy, Declan Morrissey, and Conor Hickey who scored 4 points from centre forward. Team and scorers –

Aghada 1-8 Midleton 3-11

A disappointing performance saw Midleton run out comfortable winners. Only a late goal from Davy Leahy and late points from Stephen O’Donoghue and Alan Creedon helped put a bit more respectability on the score board. Pa O’Connor, Alan Morrissey, Stephen Gilroy and Stephen O’Donoghue were best for Aghada in a game that finished Aghada 1-8 V Midleton 3– 11. Aghada team and scorers – Brian.Wall,

Wed 1st Mar Junior football 2 league

Aghada 1-8 Ballinacurra 1-8

The Junior B’s played out an exciting draw with neighbours Ballinacurra in Division 2 last Wednesday week. Aghada got the dream start when Kenneth O’Brien pounced for a goal after a scintillating run from wing forward Davy Leahy. Corner forward Eoin O’Donovan then set up Mickey Lewis for a point. Ballinacurra got back into the game with a couple of points of their own, but were a bit wayward in their shooting. At half time the goal was the difference between the sides – Aghada 1-3 V Ballinacurra 0- 3. It was all “the village” as the second half got underway. They not only pulled back the three point deficit, but opened up a three point lead of their own. But when Shane Morrissey pointed midway through the half, Aghada started a comeback of their own. The outstanding Leahy ( who had 2 earlier points in the half) was fouled, and Poacher pointed the free to leave just a point in it. With time almost up, Lewis himself earned a free out on the sideline. He might have been slightly further in from the line when he took the free, and it sailed between the posts to leave both sides with a share of the points. Anthony Connolly, Nigel Berry and Stephen O’Donoghue were others to impress for Aghada. Aghada Team and Scorers –

Aghada 2-4 Glenville 0-6

Played under lights in bitterly cold conditions in Rostellan, it was an extremely low scoring first half. Points from Nigel Berry and David Leahy were enough to leave Aghada all square at the break. The second half was equally as close, but 2 goals from Kenneth O’Brien (one from play and one penalty) ultimately proved the difference between the 2 sides. Aghada were best served by Brian Wall in goals, Michael Morrissey, Conor Hickey, Richie Good and Ken O’Brien.Final score Aghada 2-4 V Glenville 0-6. Aghada 2-6 Carrigtwohill 2-4

The J’B’s got their first win of the season with a narrow 2 point victory over Carrigtwohill's second team on Sunday afternoon last. Playing with the elements in the first half, Aghada, playing some excellent football, took the game to their opponents. With Mickey Lewis and Kenneth O’Brien pulling the strings up front and the forwards receiving a good quality supply of ball from especially, Alan Creedon and Declan Morrissey, Aghada were 2-6 to 1-2 in front at the short whistle. Poacher pounced for Aghada first goal, after Kob’s initial shot was parried. Lewis returned the favour when setting up Kob for Aghada’s second just before the break. It could have been more, Dave Leahy, who impressed at wing forward, saw an effort crash off the crossbar and out to safety. Still Aghada had a good lead. It was against the wind and uphill in more ways then one in the second half. Aghada didn’t score in the second half and now it was the turn of the backs to come to the fore. The 2 Walshs were tigerish in the cornerback berths, while Shane Morrissey was defending well on the ’40. With time almost up and the lead down to just 2 points Chopper pulled off a point blank save to deny Carrig a goal and ensure the first points of the season. Aghada Team & Scorers –

Sat 22nd Feb Junior football league 1 Aghada 1-8 Dungourney 1-7

Aghada started well and had the better of the 1st half exchanges. Darren Lee in goals, Alan Morrissey, who was outstanding at wing back, and up front Stephen Gilroy, Mark and Mickey Lewis helped Aghada to a 6 points to 3 interval lead. The second half was a different story however with the home side dominating possession for virtually the entire 30 minutes. A combination of poor shooting and good defending kept Aghada in the driving seat – 2 points to the good entering the final stages. Dungourney pounced for a goal however and led for the first time in the game. Aghada dug deep. Corner back Michael Morrissey made a burst up the field before off loading to Brian Morrissey. Brian danced past a couple of defenders before being hauled down inside the big square for a penalty. Mark Lewis duly dispatched the ball to the net and Aghada were 2 points to the good again. Dungourney had one last chance which flashed just over the crossbar and Aghada held on for a win on a 1- 8 to 1- 7 scoreline. Aghada Team and scorers –

Fri 21st Feb Junior football league 2 Youghal 3-12 Aghada 0-4

he JB’s had a Friday night lights game against Youghal’s second team in Rostellan. Considering our 2nd string needed a replay to beat them in championship last year , it was always going to be a difficult fixture for our third string and so it proved. Despite a record attendance – 27 players togged out – Youghal were simply too strong and ran out convincing winners. Alan Creedon got Aghada off to a flyer when he pounced on a rebound to goal after 5 minutes. Carrignavar with the aid of the wind responded well, and a mix up in the Aghada defence let them in for a goal of their own. Still at half time Aghada were in a good position only a point down on a 1-3 v 1- 4 scorleine. The goals started to fly in at both ends at the start of the second half. Conor Hickey had one for Aghada, and this was followed up with another major when Kenneth O’Brien finished a great move involving the Morrissey brothers and Mark Lewis.Carrignavar had a goal of their own and were by now on top at midfield and taking the game to the home side.
