Report 2005 WILLIE RYAN

An early start the Willy Ryan to be played for, had to get ready.
First time playing a round in Cloyne how would it go down? An U21 game in Rostellan at 4-00pm how would we finish in time. Four teams in Cloyne three teams on time one late the one that mattered, late start same in Rostellan six teams on time the seventh again late. Again the one that mattered. On to the games hosts Aghada take on Midleton seconds. Slow to start (it was only 10-15am) Midleton went ahead. then a goal from Michael McCarthy got Aghada back on track. Goals followed from William Leahy , Brian O’Byrne and Dave Rice while Ger O’Brien added points to leave Aghada winners on the score line of 4-5 to 2-2 subs Shane Hanlon, Conor O’Driscoll, Ben Jones and Peter Cronin wade a difference. Over in Cloyne the home team accounted for Castlelyons, while in the old field Fr. O’Neill’s accounted for Carrignavar. Back to Cloyne Kiltha Óg got the better of reigning Champions Killeagh in a very tight game. Mean while back at the ranch reigning group 2 East Cork Champions St. Catherine’s and hot favorites were to strong for Youghal. In the new field The group four East Cork champions Midleton beat the group 3 East Cork Champions Watergrasshill. Back in Cloyne the locals had a set back when Kiltha Óg beat them. While in group 2 O’Neill’s saw off near rivals Youghal. Now came the show down could Aghada reverse the Championship Final result against group 3 East Cork Champions Watergrasshill and how they did. Goals from Ryan O’Keeffe and Kane Looney had Aghada on the attack Rice and O’Keeffe added points to leave Aghada winners and topping the group with Midleton second. St. Catherine, s had victories against O’Neill’s (0-4 to 0-2) and Carrignavar to see them top the group and into the semi final. Followed by O’Neill’s who came second. Back to Cloyne and the real drama with Castlelyons and Cloyne accounting for Killeagh it was down to the last match between Castlelyons and Kiltha to see who would get the nod. Castlelyons had to win by a big margin and they duly obliged. Frantic phone calls to sort out goal difference saw Cloyne who topped the group and Castlelyons head for Rostellan for the remainder of the competition.
At 2-00pm the quarter finals started O’Neill’s who saw off a gallant Midleton to reach the semi final against Cloyne. Over in the other field the real drama was about to unfold. Castlelyons started at a blistering pace and despite the Aghada’s goalie’s James O’Leary’s best efforts lead at half time by eight points Time to go home. Wait our lads are stirring two goals from O’Byrne, a mighty Point from centre back and Aghada’s man of the tournament Jeffery Creedon had us back in the game. Ryan O’Keeffe put Aghada ahead but Castlelyons equalised as the ref blew the whistle. Five minutes extra time Dave Rice and William Leahy worked hard at centre field when O’Byrne landed two points we were on our way. Castlelyons threw everything at us but Cormac Sheehan, Tim Hartnett, Michael Burchill, Jack Hayes and Scott Garde were equal to the task. Up front Rory Hurley, Ger O’Brien, Kane Looney and the mighty Michael McCarthy made waves as we made our way to the semi against St. Catherine’s. Roisin Culligan also played her part. On to the semi finals With Cloyne taking on Fr. O’Neill’s again this was a very good game but the Ladysbridge outfit were to get the better of a gallant Cloyne team. In the second Semi final the favorites St. Catherine’s took on the hosts Aghada. The rigors of the day proved too much for Aghada as St. Catherine’s opened a big lead by half time. Yet our lads never gave up and owned the ball in the second half but could find no way past a strong Saints backline. Aghada brought on Jake O’Donoghue, Evan McGee and Dave Daly to no avail
Now the scene was set six and a half hours after the start down to two teams and only two points between them in the group match and the sun shining what more would a man want. Like the wine the best was kept for last, a titanic game ensued with both teams playing like it was their first game of the day. O’Neill’s lead at the brake by a single score. On resumption St. Catherine’s started to get on top and as time ticked away looked like bring Willy Ryan to Ballynoe for only the second time in 24 years. Seconds left O’Neill’s rally a long clearance the corner forward is on it pulls goal Willy is now off to the Bridge for the first time puck out and the Willy Ryan is over for another year. Well done to all. The Aghada club would like to thank Cloyne for hosting one of the group stages, it was a big help to us. Also to our refs who stuck it out all day. Bill Cody in Cloyne, and Brian Walsh and Barry Day in Rostellan also to the 11 teams that took part.
