Sun 6th Nov U16 Hurling league semi final

Aghada 4-6 Cloyne 2-13

after extra time

U16 hurlers lose out in League semi final in the last minute of extra time.
Aghada started off this game at a blistering pace when Cian Fleming pointed after a minute when it could be easily have been a major. Finbarr Day followed up with a free and when Fleming goaled we were on our way. Fleming added another minor while Day scored two to leave Aghada ahead at half time 1-5 to Cloyne’s 0-0. Now Aghada had to turn to face the wind. And how the backs were tested Conor Rice and Aidan O’Connell were now to the fore as Cloyne turned the screw. Two points in as many minutes had Aghada worried but a free for Day settled the nerves. Despite great play from Chris Cashman and Gearóid Murphy Cloyne got two more minors. Then as we entered the last Quarter Day again found the Cloyne net after some great work from Shane Wall to put day light between the sides. Now Cloyne piled on the pressure three unanswered points, before they got a goal from a 65. After a mighty save from Pa. Crowley which went wide, but in the refs wisdom he gave the 65. Now with only a point in it the pressure mounted then Cloyne levelled with two minutes left. Aghada fought back but two frees from Day were to far out against the wind to matter. Now for extra time Again Aghada won the toss and played with the wind. Goals from Day and Fleming and Aghada were motoring. Again Aghada held Cloyne scoreless against the wind. Cloyne have a point within a minute of the restart.then came the desitive moment when Fleming got injured.Slowly but surely they reeled in Aghada. Then in the last minute with Aghada two points ahead Cloyne goaled to take this game at the death. Sun 21st Aug u16 hurling championship final

Aghada 3-4 Watergrasshill 2-8

More heart brake
Having started off with two goals Aghada looked odds on to win this one. This was a great game of hurling played on a bad night. Captain Finbarr Day had two goals got within seven minutes of the start. Cian Fleming added a point to put us six points clear entering the second quarter. Then came the Hill fight back scoring 2-2 to Flemings two points in a six minute spell to lead for the 1st time as the short whistle went. On resumption Fleming levelled matters. The Hill scored two more points to lead entering the last quarter. Now with Aghada pressing Day won a free and seeing his chance planked it in the corner of the net for the lead again. The Hill came again and with two points ran out winners by the narrowest of margins.

Tue 16th Aug u16 hurling championship Aghada 2-6 Bride Rv. 1-7

They say fortune favours the brave well it did in this closely fought U16 C Hurling Championship tie.
After a big league defeat by the Rovers Aghada had to be at their best indeed they were to give of their best.
Bride Rovers opened the scoring with a minor after 3 minutes of play. Finbarr Day replied for Aghada with a placed ball just on the 1st quarter mark Cian Fleming gave Aghada the lead for the 1st time. This lead was short lived as the Rovers hit two inside a minute. With both defences playing out of their skin scores were scarce. Willie O’Shea, Conor Rice and especially Gearóid Murphy cleared a lot of ball. Outside them Pádraig Mulry done his bit for the cause while Centre back Aidan O’Connell was in the thick of it. Cian Fleming now started to get on top and when he sent a high long ball in the square it found the back of the net to lead again. Back came the Rovers two more points on the trot to level the game at the short whistle. Fleming pointed just after the throw in then the Rovers started to better of the exchanges getting a great goal on the 35th minute too again put it up to Aghada. The Rovers added another point. Fleming replied but Rovers pointed on the 40th minute to go a goal clear. Now Aghada put their shoulders to the wheel, Michael Russell and Andrew O’Donoghue piled on the pressure from the centre field. Owen Healy started to win ball on the wing as did Cathal Mulry. Now with more ball going into the front three John O’Brien, Finbarr Day and Shane Wall Aghada started to make waves. But the game was still stale mate. Then as we entered the final quarter O’Brien won a great ball on the edge of the small square and was heading for goal when he was brought down. Day made no mistake from the resulting penalty. To level matters once again. Now Aghada had wind in their sails Ronan Sheehan now excelled at half back then following a mighty clearance for Rice Cian Fleming gave Aghada the lead again. Healy was now having a big impact on the game and he went on one of his runs but he shipped a mighty hard shoulder into the face to put him out of the game with six minutes on the clock. Could we hold out and to add insult to injury the ref gave a clash ball. Now the Rovers came in waves but our lads repelled all invaders Pa. Crowley in particular and when team Captain Finbarr Day pointed 4 minutes in injure time we were on our way. A complete team performance if there was ever one.

Aghada’s backline of especially Ronan Sheehan on the forty and Conor Rice at full back were the architects of this win while up front Cathal Mulry showed well scoring 1-1. Eoin Healy caused a lot of trouble at centre forward while Finbarr Day at full forward came into his own in the second half. Scoring 3-4. the hard work is starting to pay off. Rory Walsh , and Aidan O’Connell also caught the eye.

Mon 18th April U16 hurling Aghada 4-10 Watergrasshill 3-9

Our first hurling game of the year turned out to be a cracker even with the heavy field. While Aghada had the best of the play in the 1st half they had to put up with a mighty ‘Hill’ comeback. With Finbarr Day on fire up front (he scored 3-6) Aghada had the best player on view. In the opening twenty minutes our lads opened up a big lead with Rory Walsh, Ronan Sheehan and Aidan O’Connell playing a big part. But the ‘hill’ came to play a match and how they responded two goals and they were back in the frame. Aghada now had to dig deep Conor Rice, William O’Shea and Andrew O’Donoghue tried hard to stem the tide. The Watergrasshill boys slowly but surely closed the gap and then with 5 minutes left on the clock they got the goal to level the game for the 1st time. From the puck out Ronan won the ball made a solo run then hit a long ball in for Day to get on the end of it and rattle the net for the lead again. From the puck out Shane Wall got the insurance point. Kenneth Higgins also showed some fine touches as did Cathal Mulry and Eoin Healy.
