| A bad week for Aghada hurling following our u12 final loss our u14 hurlers lost against a Sars side that fired on all cylinders. While the score shows a big win for Sars Aghada have their moments two soft goals combined with our lads missing at least 1-5 the writing was on the wall. Aghada played with all the heart and skill they had but on this occasion we had to give way. The returned Italian (Giorgio) had a mighty game and showed us what we missed in the Feile. | Rostellan has seen many epic encounters over the years but Sat 18th
June must rank with the best of them. One can go to Oakwood to ride
the biggest roller coaster in Europe, but today Rostellan was that
roller coaster and what a ride it was. Aghada opened the section when
they took on Balltgalget of Down. Here we started slow with the Down
men goaling after 2 minutes. We fought back with a points from the
Michaels (Russell and Desmond) to begin the fight back try as we might
we still struggled to contain a very skill full Down team. The half
time score was 1-0 to 0-2 for our lads. Within three minutes of the
resumption the northern boys had two majors and the game was beyond
our crowd or so we thought. (Bottom of the Coaster) Now Aghada decided
to hurl, Russell and Healy lead the charge with a goal (Healy) and
a point. Now it was the Down boys time to weather a bit of pressure
but try as we may we could not break them down. Gearóid Murphy,
Eoin Savage and Seamus O Gormaín closed shop and the down boys
scored no more. As we trooped off the field our visitors Killmessan
from Meath said “despair not we will beat Carrig” and
again in a game fit to grace Croke Park the Meath boys were the victors.
Now the whole tournament was wide open again with all teams level
on 2 points after two games each. Now we had to beat old rivals Carrigtwohill
to have any chance. Again we leaked goals Carrig rattled the net after
just one minute the pressure was on two more minors from Carrig to
Russell’s free left the half time score 1-2 to 0-1. And 15 minutes
from bowing out of the feile. Turning with the wind Aghada started
to pick of the scores. Slowly but surely we started to reel them in.
scores were hard earned it was like pulling teeth John O’Brien,
Kenneth Higgins and Andrew O’Donoghue were to the fore. Three
frees from Russell only a point in it the atmosphere was electric
as the big crowd got behind both teams. Carrig pointed to stretch
their lead. Dessie replied from the puck out Brian Condon now started
to his mark. Russell pointed again to level matters and then in stepped
Dessie with a mighty point from a narrow angle to lead for the 1st
time as the clock ticked slowly down. Now Carrig respond and won a
21yard free as time was up goal O no two points down stop the clock.
Grown men were near to tears. But have no fear Dessie is here from
villain to legend in seconds. Dessie won a free out on the wing. The
Aghada sideline were ecstatic, but Dessie retaliates hop ball. Game
over .no we win the ball. Dessie gathers two steps he is in “GOAL”
Sean O’Keeffe senior and Gerry Crowley leads the charge on to
the field. Despair for the brave Carrig boys the spoils of victory
for the amazing Aghada warriors. As the dust settled we looked up
the book to discovered we needed Killmessan to win for our lads to
top the group. All eyes were on the men from Meath. Could they do it the northern boys were good very good. Ballygalget score a goal and a point chance gone. No wait they fight back again the same story every score was hard earned point followed point the Aghada crowd moved closer to the wire still afraid to shout two points behind then one. The kitchen was abandoned as the ladies downed tools. Kilmessan take the lead now we were in full voice (what we had left) two more points for Killmessan and we were on our way to Bishopstown to play Sarsfields in the Quarterfinal. This was a big come down. We started against the wind and Sars had three points on the board before we knew were we were. Then the mighty Russell was downed with a blow to the hand. As our talisman left the field our chance was gone. After the two days hurling losing Paul Flynn after the 1st match and Padraig shipping an injury we were down to rock bottom. Dave Rice, Michael Daly and Josh O’Shea gave all but our race was run. Pa Crowley, Gerard O’Brien, Ritchie Dowling, Michael Burchill and Andrew O’Donoghue tried in vain to step the tide but alas we were out. Sars went on to win it out . For the record Aghada 1-7 Killmessan 1-4 Pa. Aghada lost to Carrigtwohill
Rostellan was at its best, the sun shone the field was immaculate
and so was the hurling. Aghada started the better Josh pointed after
3 minutes. Aghada should have scored more in this spell. Then on
the 6th minute a mistake in defence left a long ball in the back
of pa’ net. A minute later the city boys landed a mighty point
from a free on half way and we were under pressure. Russell, Healy
and O’Brien were showing well up front but scores were hard
to come bye. Jose pointed again before the town added three more
to leave the half time score 0-2 to 1-4. Aghada had no luck in between
Healy easily the best forward on view hit the upright and the ball
was cleared. Jose and Dessie also were denied . Team subs used Seamus Ó Gormaín for Flynn (30m)Brian Condon for Desmond (55m), other subs, Richard Dowling, Tim Hartnett, William Leahy,Gerard O'Brien and Michael Burchill

Tue 3rd May u14 hurling League Aghada 1-10 Sars 1-9
Two out of two for u14 hurlers. Aghada turned on the power just after half time to peg back Sars who had opened a four-point lead at the brake. This match had some fine hurling despite the heavy conditions. Michael Desmond opened the scoring when he latched on to a great ball from Michael Russell. Sars hit back with two minors before Russell pointed a free and Eoin Healy followed from the puck out. As the half closed Aghada gave away a few silly frees and suddenly Sars were four points ahead in as many minutes. Aghada made a few changes at half time and they worked Russell and Dessie had two points within a minute and now Aghada was on top. Kenneth Higgins kept plenty ball into the forwards while at full back Georgio was magnificent as was Gearóid Murphy and Padraig Mulry in the corners. Russell exchanged two points with Sars. Then in 52nd minute came the brake through a goal by Josh O’Shea from a great ball by Richard Dowling. From the puck out Eoin Healy sent a high ball in, John O’Brien plucked the Ball from the air ,turned and a great point to put Aghada two clear with eight minutes on the clock. Dessie got two more to put Aghada four up as time ran out. Been the club they are Sars came again , forced a 20 free Pa Saved but from the resulting brake Sars goaled. As Pa pucked out the ball the whistle sounded on a famous victory. Team Pa Crowley Gearóid Murphy (capt), Georgio Corigliano, Padraig Mulry Eoin Savage, Andrew O’Donoghue, Chris Cashman Kenneth Higgins, Michael Russell (0-4) Brian Condon, Eoin Healy (0-1), Paul Flynn Michael Desmond(0-4) John O’Brien (0-1), Josh O’Shea (1-0) Subs Richard Dowling for Condon, David Rice for Paul Flynn all half time. Thur 21st April U14 hurling County Championship
Aghada 0-2 Na Piarsaigh 3-17
| While the score line would suggest that we were not at the races,
that was not the full story. Indeed the city boys were good but three
soft goals two from long range clouded the issue. Aghada played with
heart and valour and some fine skill at times. Scores were hard to
come bye but still we played our part in this County championship
qualifier (winner going into Premier and loser into the A county). Some of our players also played a game during the day and this was no help. Still we have a good team on our hands and we eagerly await Tue night’s draw.
