– Semi Final Munster Senior League

Aghada V Nemo Rangers

The senior footballers season finally came to an end at Rostellan on Saturday last, when Nemo knocked us out at the semi-final stage of the competition. Nemo, who fielded 11 of their championship side that is still in training for Munster and All-Ireland honours , looked a lot sharper than Aghada and ran out convincing winners. Aghada did have good performances from Brian Wall and Brendan Flaherty and scored 2 good goals from Kieran O’Connor and Conor Hicky, but it was all to no avail. Aghada Team & Scorers –

Sat 15th Oct Senior Football Championship semi Final

Aghada 0-9 Nemo Rangers 0-13

It was a case of what might have been for the Aghada footballers after they came so close to toppling favourites Nemo in Pairc Ui Rinn last Saturday night.
Aghada really took the fight to their opponents from the off, and playing some excellent football, lead by 3 points to nil, and were also 5 points to 1 up during the first half. James O’Connell and Brendan Flaherty had Nemo’s intercounty defenders in all sorts of trouble up front, Pierce O’Neill and Aiden Kelleher were winning the midfield battle and at the back Aghada were defending very well, especially the 2 O’Connors Kieran and John. Eoin O’Neill was unerring from frees and play and notched up four points. John Connolly ran the length of the field up from corner back to score a magnificent point. James and Pierce both scored from play while centre forward Ger Melvin had a free, and all these scores left Aghada with an 8 point total at half time. Nemo for their part had recovered from their slow star, and were only down by 2 at the break having scored 4 from play and 2 placed balls. Still going in at the interval the signs were looking good for Aghada.
From the resumption, Pierce won the ball and after a surging run set up Davy Creedon who shot wide. Unfortunately this set the tone for Aghada in the second half and where they couldn’t miss in the first half, they couldn’t seem to find the target at all in the second period. Nemo gradually grew in confidence and pegged back the Aghada lead, before hitting the front after a quarter of an hour. Aghada’s one and only point of the half came from an Eoin O’Neill free after James O’Connell had been fouled. Nemo were well in the ascendancy by now, and only a fantastic save by young Evan Kennedy in the Aghada goal, prevented them from wrapping the contest up earlier. Aghada showed great heart and continued to battle right to the end, but were unable to convert some good chances into scores and this in the end was crucial, and left Nemo as deserving winners.

Sat 13th Aug Senior Football championship

Aghada 1-8 Beara 0-9

Our first semi final was way back in 1897 when a Cork Examiner report stated that for a hurling team Aghada played a mighty game of football against a strong Dunmanway side. We had to wait 95 years before we reached another senior semi final when the mighty O’Donovan Rossa team who went on to win the all Ireland club title beat us after the hardest game they got that year. Drive on so much heart brake in between games we could have won, Fermoy, Innishannon, Midleton, and Páirc Uí Rinn last year. Chance gone you would have said. BUT AGHADA ARE AGHADA. Last December Aghada drew Nemo. O No all over. Then the icing on the cake both teams into the next round. Move on to Cobh ,Nemo came out of the traps to leave us for dead. Yet most Aghada people left Cobh happy, why we saw enough to see we were there or about . Next came the mighty Naomh Aban in one of the tightest games yet we turned on the power to win by the narrowest of margins.
Then to the Beara game the Echo tipped Aghada while the Examiner held the traditional line Beara for the next round.
It looked the Latter’s way Brendan Ger turned on the power two points within 6 minutes before Stephen O’Keeffe replied. Two more points from Brendan Ger and Aghada were in trouble. Then with their first master switch Bothers John Paul O’Connor to centre back and Cork Senior Kieran to Full back to mark the afore mentioned Brendan Ger things settled down. The evergreen Ronan Dwane went to wing back now Aghada were on top.
Then we started to waste wide after wide but while we done that Beara had two goal chances. (Indeed so had James O’Connell one anyway ) Cousins Tom and Eoin O’Neill pointed to leave the half time score Beara 0-6 Aghada 0-4
Beara were first to score in the second half with a point. The Aghada crowd were roaring for Benio to come on and when he did on the 36th minute the game changed ( the second stroke). First ball in a clean catch turn and shoot .POINT on our way . Now with Pierce O’Neill showing why he was an underdog Aghada were on top. Young John Connelly at corner back and Brendan Crowley out side him were at their best. Now Aghada were every where two frees form Stephen O’Keeffe and one form a ever present Melvin put Aghada level with 11 minutes left on the clock. Two minutes later the mighty Flaherty struck again this time a GOAL to put Aghada ahead for the first time. Now Beara turned the screw and only for a mighty block down form the captain Pierce things could have been different.

Fri 29th July Senior football Kelleher Shield

Aghada 0-11 Clonakilty 1-6

Aghada seniors had a good weekend last week in preparation for their upcoming quarter final meeting with Beara. On Friday last, they travelled to Clonakilty for the second last Kelleher Shield game. Despite being without a few regulars, Aghada put in a great performance to emerge with the points on a 0-11 V 1-6 scoreline. Then on Sunday morning in Rostellan, they had a comprehensive victory over last years defeated Munster finalists, Stradbally of Waterford. This game finished on a 0-16 V 1-6 scoreline. With the Beara game looming next weekend, manager Conor Counihan will no doubt be pleased that his side are still displaying the good form they had in the run in to the Naomh Aban victory in the last round.

Sat June 25th SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Aghada 0-11 Noamh Aban 0-10

A great night for Aghada in Pairc Ui Rinn, last Saturday night, when the senior footballers overcame the challenge of Naomh Aban after a thrilling hours football. All square with 2 minutes to go, a well worked move involving Trevor O’Keeffe & Pierce O’Neill ended with excellent corner forward Stephen O’Keeffe, pointing with his left leg, to give Aghada the lead and ultimately the win they richly deserved.
It was O’Keeffe that opened the scoring after 2 minutes. He took on and beat his man, before being fouled and he converted the free himself. The men from Ballyvourney had the next 2 scores, through frees from their intercounty star Micheal O Cronin. After quarter of an hour it was all square at 4 points a piece. Ger Melvin had 2 (1 from play and 1 free) and James O’Connell had one from play. The Aghada full line of O’Keeffe, Brendan Flaherty and O’Connell, were all dominating their men at this stage. O Connell could have goaled on 17 minutes, but the referee called back play for a free to Aghada, which Melvin converted. Midfielder Aiden Kelleher kicked a great point, but Cronin kicked 2 in the second quarter also to leave the sides level at 6 apiece at the interval.
The second half was just as close. Aghada’s defence was excellent, with John O’Connor and Paul Kilbane particularly impressive. Ger Melvin opened the scoring with a free after a minute and also started to get on top of the Naomh Aban’s centre back , Anthony Lynch . A point from the other midfielder Pierce O’Neill, seemed to jump start him into the game, and he went on to dominate around the middle in the final quarter. Hardworking wing forward Eoin O’Neill kicked a huge free and with a quarter to play Aghada were a point clear. Another free from Melvin on 22 minutes restored Aghada’s 2 point advantage, but again Cronin levelled matters, with 2 more points for his tally. Aghada really dug deep, and their commitment to winning this game was epitomised by Stevie O’Keeffe, who came from a couple of furlongs behind to dispossess a Naomh Aban player, and win a great ball back for Aghada. Then came his point and it was backs to the wall defending for Aghada till the full time whistle. O Cronin did have one last chance, but under pressure from Kieran O’Connor, he could only drop his effort short into the hands of ‘keeper Shane O’Connell. A great win for the club and next up for the footballers is divisional outfit Beara in the quarter final. Aghada Team & Scorers –

Munster Senior League

Aghada 0-11 Laune Rangers 2-9

Aghada made the long trip to Killorglin on Saturday last to take on local team.Laune Rangers in the Munster Senior football league. Aghada had a bright enough opening , but were to pay dearly for some wayward shooting in front of goals. At the other end the Kerry men were proving far more clinical up front, and Aghada were grateful to net minder Shane O'Connell, who made a number of fine saves. At half time Aghada found themselves 2 goals down on a 1-7 to 0-4 scoreline. It was a much improved Aghada outfit in the second half, although Rangers continued to carve out goal chances. Kieran O'Connor was in excellent form at wing back
as was Eoin O'Neill at wing forward, and while Aghada outscored the men from the Kingdom 7 pts to 1-2 in this second half, it was not enough to gain the spoils. Aghada Team -

Fri 10th June Kelleher Shield - Aghada 2-13 St. Finbarrs 2-9

Aghada had their third Kelleher Shield victory in a row, when they defeated
St. Finbarrs in Togher last Friday week. While the Barrs, did have a couple
of goal chances early on it was Aghada who started the better, and led after
the first quarter by 1-6 to 2 points. The goal came from excellent corner forward
Stephen O'Keeffe, who also registered 2 points in this period. Suddenly the
Barrs took over and as Aghada struggled to gain any possession, they kicked
3 points in the 2nd quarter to leave the half time score - Aghada 1-6 V St.
Finbarrs 0-5.
Aghada were quick out of the blocks again for the second half, and when full
forward Brendan Flaherty billowed the Barr's net for Aghada's second goal, the
game seemed secure. Back came the Barrs with 2 goals of their own, but some
resolute defending for Aghada and some super points on the break helped them
to a deserved 4 point win. Aghada Team and scorers - E.Kennedy,

Monday the 30th of May Kelleher Shield -

Aghada 2-9 Douglas 0-12

Aghada put back to back Kelleher Shield victories together, when they had a hard fought 3 point win away to Douglas on last Monday week. An even opening
to the game saw Douglas leading by 4pts to 3 after the first quarter. Then Aghada went on a scoring blitz, with full forward Breandan Flaherty twice rattling the city men's net. Ger Melvin hit 2 points, and Tom O'Neill scored one from
midfield, which moved Aghada's tally to 2-6 at half time. Scores were a lot harder to come by in the second period. Wing back Kieran O'Connor, after one of his trademark surging runs, had Aghada's first point after the restart. At
that stage Douglas had 4 points of their own, and there was only two points between the sides with one quarter left to play. Douglas would only manage one more score however, while Aghada had 2 points one from Ger Melvin and one from Pierce O'Neill. Despite putting Aghada under a lot of pressure in the closing stages, the defence held firm , to ensure the points for Aghada. Team and Scorers

Sat 21st May Senior football league Aghada 1-12 Bantry 1-6

It was back to the big ball for Aghada's first team on Saturday last, when they took on Bantry in the Kelleher Shield. Despite the long journey, Bantry started the better and got an early goal after a well worked moved. Aghada replied with a point from James O'Connell. Slowly Aghada started to take control, with Tom O'Neill and Aiden Kelleher dominating at midfield. On 20 minutes Breandan Flaherty was unlucky not to goal, he did point soon after as did Ger Melvin and James who got his second. Bantry also scored 3 more points before the break tpo leave Aghada trailing at the interval on a 1-3 to 0-4 scoreline. Aghada flew out of the bloks in the second half with 5 points in the opening 10 minutes. Evan Kennedy made a fine save in the Aghada goal on 9 minutes, while at the other end James was unlucky not to score after being set up by Eoin O'Neill. O'Connell was flying at this stage and Bantry stuggled to cope with him on his first senior game since returning from Oz. Brian Wall, Paudie Wall and Paul Kilbane were prominent at the back for Aghada, and the defence limited Bantry to only 3 points in the second half. Aghada taked on another 3 points in the final quarter, the pick of which was a super Stephen O'Keeffe effort. With 2 minutes to go, James bundled
in a goal to end any hopes of a Bantry fightback. Aghada team and scorers

Sat 9th April Senior Football Championship

Aghada 1-7 Nemo Rangers 3-12

With both teams going into the 3rd round this match had a surreal feel about it. Aghada went into the match with a long injury list. While three more were disciplined and James O’Connell in Australia and three players making there debut expectations were low. Nemo opened the scoring with two points before Thomas O’Neill pointed for the seasides. Nemo were to score four more before Stephen O’Keefe got our next. Eoin O’Neill followed within a minute. While Nemo were out scoring our lads we had a lot of the ball but slow passing and an number of mistakes made it easy for the city boys who went on to score three more with out reply to leave the half time score 0-9 to 0-3 at the brake.
On resumption Nemo pointed while twin John Wall replied on the 35th minute. Aghada were not to score again until the 53rd minute when captain Pearce O’Neill pointed this sparked an Aghada revival. An Eoin O’Neill free and then a Brendan Flaherty penalty followed by a mighty point again from O’Neill, suddenly only five points between the teams and as many minutes left.
Aghada now threw everything forward but were caught with not one but two sucker punches. Nemo converted a penalty on the stroke of time and then like the team they are struck again two minutes later. While Nemo were worthy winners our lads were far from disgraced. Best for Aghada Shane O’Connell, John Paul O’Connor, brothers Pearce and Thomas O’Neill. Our three debuts’ twins John and Brian Wall and John Connelly accounted well for themself's

Sun 3rd April Kelleher Shield –Senior football

Aghada 0-11 Newcestown 5-5

Goals win games they say and Aghada gave up 5 of them to Newcestown on Sunday last, and left themselves with no chance of earning the points from this league fixture. Played in Rostellan, the visitors had the perfect start with 2 goals in the first quarter. At the interval 6 points separated the sides. Aghada started the better in the second half, and kicked three unanswered points, but with their first attack of the second half, Newcestown rattled the Aghada net for the 3rd time. 2 more majors were to follow and despite the best efforts of Stephen O’Keeffe, Davy Creedon and Pierce O’Neill, there was no way back for Aghada. Mon 28th Mar Munster Senior Football League -

Aghada 2-12 Ardmore 0-10

Aghada deservedly came out on top of this excellent game of football playedin Ardmore on last Easter Monday. 5 points a piece at the interval, Aghada produced a blistering quarter of football right from the restart and registered 2-2 in this period. Two well worked moves were brilliantly finished to the net by first Brendan Flaherty and then Trevor O'Keeffe, to give Aghada a commanding lead which they held to the final whistle. The Aghada full back line of Brendan Crowley, John and Kieran O'Connor were well in command throughout this game, and this along with a strong midfield pairing of the O'Neill brothers Tom and Pierce, as well as good performances up front from Eoin O'Neill and Trevor O'Keeffe
were key factors in Aghada's victory. Davy Creedon also had a super second half at wing back, capping it off with a fine individual point. The game also saw young Evan Kennedy make his competitive debut for the Aghada seniors between the posts
