Mon 25th July Minor Hurling Championship

Aghada 1-10 St. Colemans 5-10

The final score in this game doesn’t do justice to the gallant performance of the Aghada lads, who put in a huge effort in this first round championship game.
But as they say goals win games, and Colmans got them at vital times in the game to deservedly earn their place in the next round. Aghada started the better, and led by 4 points to no score after quarter of an hour – 3 from Alan Morrissey and one from Alan Creedon. The Aghada backs were defending well, with Stephen Gilroy, Kenneth O’Brien, Aiden O’Connell and Paul Crowley most impressive. At midfield Paudie Wall and Rory Walsh were coming out on top, while up front as well as the 2 Alans, Sean O’Donoghue was a colossal figure at centre forward.
On 16 minutes, Colemans opened their account with a point, but this was quickly cancelled out by a fine individual effort from Alan Morr. With 10 minutes to go to the break, Colemans pounced for their first goal. A soft free was awarded, 30 yards out, but the strike which followed was anything but soft as it rattled the Aghada net. Points were exchanged between the sides soon after, and as half time approached Aghada still led by a single point. Injury time in the first half, changed all that, as Colemans struck two more goals to change the complexion of the game completely. Alan Creedon did score an excellent point at the death, but at half time the scoreboard read – Aghada 0-7- St. Colemans 3-2.
It was the Cloyne/Russell Rovers combination, now playing with the wind, that started the second half the brighter. 3 points in 6 minutes, with just one in reply from Aghada’s hard working wing forward Ronan Sheehan. On 11 minutes the same player was fouled and Alan Morr hit over the free. Disaster struck again, however when Colemans goaled for the 4th time on 13 minutes. St. Colemans took over at this stage and despite the best efforts of Finbarr Day in goals as well as Daryl Kidney and David Condon, Colemans tacked on three more points and their 5th goal with 5 minutes left to play. The game was now beyond Aghada’s reach, but this team was never going to head home and stop playing before the 60 minutes were up. Another Ronan Sheehan point, plus a fine goal for Sean O’Donoghue, (which his outstanding performance deserved) in reply to 2 points from St. Colemans, left the amalgamation with a thoroughly deserved victory on a 5-10 v 1-10 scoreline.
Well done to manager Donal Morrissey and his charges however. They can be proud that they gave it their very best on the night. Tue 19th July Minor hurling league Aghada lost to Carrignavar

Aghada’s minor hurlers played Carrignavar in Rostellan on Tuesday last, in preparation for their upcoming championship first round against the only amalgamated side allowed play B grade - St. Colemans (Cloyne& Russell Rovers). Carrignavar proved too strong for an Aghada side, who were missing a few players on the night. Aghada did have good performances from Finbarr Day in goals, Paul Crowley, David Condon, Paudie Wall and Alan Morrissey. The latter 2 linked up well for Paudie to crash home Aghada’s only goal on the night. Aghada’s league form has been mixed, with good wins over Bride Rovers and Watergrasshill, mixed with losses to St. Coleman’s and Carrignavar. Aghada’s team and scores for the Carrignavar game – F.Day,P.Crowley,K.O’Brien,C.Rice,D.Kidney,S.Gilroy, D.Condon, P.Wall (1-5), D.Hartnett,M.O’Neill,S.O’Donoghue,A.Morrissey(0-3),R.Sheehan, C.Ryan, A.Creedon.Subs Used: A.O’Connell.
