Tue 13th Sept Minor Football Championship

Aghada 1-4 Carrigtwohill 1-17

Aghada’s minor footballers bowed of this year’s championship at the semi-final stage, when they went under to a superior Carrigtwohill outfit. Played in Shanagarry, Aghada had to field without 3 key players. Regular centre back Alan Morrissey, midfielder Sean O’Donoghue and wing-forward Brendan Kearney were all unavailable. Carrigtwohill had the wind in the first half, but despite this, Aghada had plenty of possession and scoring opportunities, but failed to make anything out of them. Carrig on the other hand were clinical up front. They opened the scoring with a point after 5 minutes and from the kick out doubled this tally. 2 minutes later they pounced for a sloppy goal, and again from the kick out, had the ball over the bar to give them a 1-3 to no score lead. Aghada’s first score came after Cian Fleming was fouled and Kenneth O’Brien pointed the resulting free. This was after 15 minutes, but Carrig, as well as being on top on the score board, now got on top in most sectors of the pitch. They rattled off 6 more points before the break, with only wing forward Paul Crowley, responding for Aghada with a good point.
Aghada had a mountain to climb in the second half, but with the wind at their backs, they still had a chance. Carrigtwohill weren’t about to slip up however, and they really went into an even higher gear in the opening quarter of the second half. 1-7 to Carrig in this period, with no score in reply from Aghada, and the contest was effectively over. Aghada did rally and scored a couple of points from Stephen Gilroy and Paudie Wall, and Kenneth goaled from the penalty spot late on, but it was never going to be enough to deny Carrigtwohill their deserved victory. Fri 19th Aug Minor football championship

Donal Walsh’s minor’s had, what turned out in the end to be, an emphatic win over St. Bridget’s in the quarterfinal of this years championship. The final score, doesn’t do justice to the gallant performance of the Castlelyons/St. Catherines amalgamation. Indeed, Aghada only took the lead in this game, 11 minutes into the second half, but once they did they never looked back. St. Bridgets started the game in whirlwind fashion, scoring 2 points and a great goal all from play, all inside the opening 5 minutes. Aghada had only a fine individual point from midfielder Paudie Wall in reply. Paudie got a second point after 7 minutes. This followed another good catch from Sean O’Donoghue at midfield, and a good run from wingback Daryl Kidney. Aghada had the next 3 points also, 2 frees from Kenneth O’Brien and another for Paudie. It was all square at this stage, but then back came Bridgets, with another 5 minute scoring spree. This time they hit 4 points between the 20th and 25th minutes, and opened a 4 point lead. Another Kenneth free, and a super score from Sean O’Donoghue, reduced the gap to 2 as the 1st half went into injury time. Right at the death Bridgets had another point to leave a goal between the sides at the break.
10 minutes into the second half, the sides were level. St Bridgets had one point in this period, but Aghada kicked 4, from Kob(2 placed balls), Shane Scanlon and another beauty from Sean O’Donoghue. Dave Leahy had a goal chance well saved but a minute later came the score that ignited the Aghada players. A great flick on from Finbar Day, left Alan Creedon to set up Shane Scanlon for a good goal. Bridgets did have a point in reply, but a great move involving centre back Alan Morrissey and Shane Scanlon, set up Kob who clung a great goal. It was all Aghada at this stage , with Stephen Gilroy and Davy Hartnett well on top at the back. Kob scored another free, and then another clever flick from Finbar, set up Cian Fleming for an excellent score. Shane Scanlon punched in a rebound for Aghada’s third goal, and Paudie finished the scoring blitz, with a point on 55 minutes. Evan Kennedy did have to make a good safe with time almost up, but Aghada were really coasting at this stage. The game finished with a 3-14 to 1-9 scoreline, and Aghada marched on to yet another semi- final, where they will meet Carrigtwohill. Aghada Team and Scorers – E.Kennedy,

Aghada 2-11 Midleton 1 -9

Aghada left it late against Midleton, with only goals right at the death from Finbarr Day and Shane Scanlon, finally clinching victory for Aghada. Midleton led throughout and lead at half time 1-6 v 1-4. Stephen Gilroy was playing very well at full back for Aghada, but with time running out and still trailing, he was moved to midfield to try and influence the game from here. This seemed to have the desired effect, and the 2 late goals powered Aghada to victory. This was Aghada's first victory in this years league after defeats to Erins Own and Carrigtwohill.
