Sun 14th Mar Intermediate hurling Liam Breathnach cup Aghada 0-10 Carrigtwohill 2-10

Liam Breathnach Cup Aghada’s intermediate hurlers travelled to Carrigtwohill on Sunday last to play Carrigtwohill in the first round of this years Liam Breathnach cup. With the changes made to the intermediate hurling competition by the county board, this competition is being run in lieu of the hurling league, which will take place later in the year.
Aghada found them playing into a strong wind in the first half, and with 10 minutes gone the scores were tied at 3 pts apiece. Aghada scores had all come from frees – 1 from John Connolly and 2 from Stephen O’Keeffe. Then Carrigtwohill went on a scoring spree scoring 2 goals and 2 points in five minutes. Ger Melvin operating from full forward had Aghada’s only points from play in the first half on 18 and 24 minutes. A free from Carrig split these two scores. 2 further points from play by Carrig left the score at half time 2-8 v 0-5 in favour of the home side. It could have been worse for Aghada, only for a fine save by ‘keeper Martin Day with 2 minutes to go to the break. The second half started in lively fashion. Stephen O’Keeffe pointed a free on 3 minutes. 2 minutes later impressive corner forward Alan Morrissey, making his intermediate debut, flashed a brilliant overhead shot narrowly wide. From the puck out Martin made another excellent point blank save and then Stephen O’Keeffe tagged on two more points for Aghada one from play and one from a free. 2 goals now between sides and 20 minutes to go. It was to be the closest Aghada got to the Carrig men however. 2 more points from Stephen plus a good strike from play by Derek Bowler wasn’t enough as Carrig hit 5 more points themselves, all but one from play. The final score read Carrigtwohill 2-13 versus Aghada 0-11. Apart from Martin in goals , who was easily Aghada’s best player on the day, Cathal O’Gorman did well at wing back, Ronan “Coach” Dwane hurled very well for the full 60 minutes at midfield, while young Alan Morrissey was the pick of the forwards. Sun 21st Mar Liam Breathnach cup Aghada 2-6 Youghal 1-7

Aghada win Walsh cup-tie at the death
In a team short the u21 footballers from the day before Aghada had a bit to do.
Playing with the wind Aghada went into an early lead when the all Morrissey full forward line nearly ran riot. Young Alan showed well and is a man for the future; Alan set Brother Vince up for a goal with a peach of a pass but the shot left a lot to be desired. Still Vincent accounted for three points one from the ground that Aghada scored in the 1st half. With Youghal clocking up 1-4 they looked a safe bet turning with the wind.
Aghada made the changes at half time. Rohan going to wingback with Melvin moving to mid field to partner the incoming Mark Lewis who took over from Paul Kilbane. While up front Tony Wall replaced the out of sorts Brian Morrissey and Dave Creedon replaced John Connelly. Youghal turned the screw scoring four points on the trot before Wall replied. Aghada to their credit never gave up but when Vincent scored a point from a semi penalty it did not look good. Then out of the blue Peirce O’Neill got the goal, Tony Wall followed with a point and when sub Derek Bowler goaled at the death there was no way back for Youghal. Ever greens Kenneth O’Keeffe and Darren Lee were to the fore front

Sun 18th April intermediate hurling Aghada 5-9 Ballyhea 2-13

They say winning is a habit, it seems that way when the hurlers took to the field a good show was all we expected, yet 16 hours after playing a major championship match Aghada turned on the style to win this game in a impressive manner
After a slow start Aghada waited for the second half to start their come back after losing the 1st on the scoreline of 0-6 to 2-8 A hat trick from minor Tony Wall goals from footballers Trevor O’Keeffe and Dave Creedon set Aghada up for this win. Even when Rohan Dwane, Brian Morrissey, Stephen O’Keeffe, and Pearse O’Neill were replaced it made no difference. Darren Lee rolled back the years to turn in a man of the match display at corner back. Ger Melvin showed that his injury is behind him when he turned in a mighty display when he came on at half time.
Team Michael Lewis, Darren Lee, Pat Cashman, Anthony Connelly, Cathal O’Gorman , J P O’Connor , Eoghan Cotter, John Connelly (0-1), Stephen O’Keeffe, Trevor O’Keeffe (1-0), Brian Morrissey (0-3), Pearse O’Neill, Vincent Morrissey (0-4), Rohan Dwane, Tony Wall (3-1)

Sat 24th April intermediate hurling league Aghada 4-16 Aghabullogue 0-12

Aghada made it 2 league wins out of 2 with a comprehensive defeat of last year’s semi-finalists Aghabullogue. Similar to last week, Aghada had a lack lustre first half, and trailed at the break on a 0-9 V 0-4 scoreline. Aghada however really turned on the style in the second period and scored 4-12 to Aghabullogue's 3 points. Some of Aghada’s points were right out of the top drawer The Aghada goalscores were Tony Wall, Vincent Morrissey who grabbed 2 and Brian Morrissey scored the last goal right at the death. Cork Intermediate Premier Hurling Championship Aghada 2-7 Tracton 2-14

Poor show from Aghada yet this was a game that could have been won. With five minutes left we were a point down and attaching, ball broke across the square. , Should have been a goal but ball cleared and despite Aghada having two extra men behind the ball (Tracton had a man sent off for two yellows and Aghada playing with a two man full forward line, Stephen O’ Keeffe as sweeper behind the Aghada centre field), goal for Tracton from here on in it was how much would Tracton win by. And did they look impressive as they added three points to leave them winners by 7 points. The Aghada men gladly heard the long whistle.
It was not all like this as Pearse O’Neill opened with a great point after one minute. Tracton replied with three points on the trot despite Aghada owning the ball. Aghada were to put seven balls wide before Vincent Morrissey pointed in the 14th minute. A minute later he again pointed before Ger Melvin gave Aghada the lead on the 18th minute. Tracton came with two points before Morrissey pointed a free on the short whistle to leave the sides level 0-5 to 0-5 O’Neill now in the centre put Aghada ahead after 20 seconds of the restart. In an 8-minute spell Tracton tacked on five points to leave Aghada struggling. Then on the 41st minute Morrissey sprung a great point and when Stephen O’Keeffe finished a ball to the net we were on our way. Within 3 minutes Tracton had it all back when they pointed and converted a semi penalty. Then on the 51st minute Aghada were handed a lifeline when sub Davie Creedon found the net after he followed in a Morrissey cross it looked good for Aghada but Tracton had other ideas.
Young Tony Wall had an impressive first game for Aghada.

Thur 6th May intermediate hurling league Aghada 2-12 Youghal 2-12 Sat 1st May

Mon 10th May intermediate hurling league Aghada 1-15 St. Catherine’s 0-11
Aghada keep their unbeaten record in league
At half time it was a different story, with the saints leading by 0-9 to 0-4. St. Catherine’s looked a class side scoring at will from the centre of the field. Fielding only 7 of the team that beat Carrig they ran circles around Aghada. Yet Catherine’s were to score only two points in the second half as Aghada started to find their feet.
Ger Melvin was in command at centre back, while Paul Kilbane grew in stature as the game went on and he pointed half way trough the half his day was made. Just after halftime Pearse O’Neill got his trade mark goal when he grabbed the ball on the forty and ran at the defence. A mighty point followed from Trevor O’Keeffe and with Brian Morrissey now playing the way he can Aghada took the game by the scruff of the neck. Brian got two points from the centre field to give Aghada the lead with nine minutes left his brother Vincent pointed two beauties. Younger brother Alan was not outdone when he also got in on the act. Stephen O’Keeffe, Dave Creedon, Melvin, Brian, and Banna impressed big time as did Billy Hennessy.

Sun 16th May Cork Intermediate Premier Hurling Championship losers group
Aghada 1-17 Aghabullogue 3-6
Aghada make amends
Aghada opened in Wirral wind fashion with points from Melvin, Vincent, Pearse and two from Stephen O’Keeffe before Aghabullogue scored in the 12th minute. From the puck out Melvin pointed a long-range effort followed a minute later by Rohan. Melvin playing a mighty game pointed again. Then Aghabullogue rallied with a point followed by a goal in as many minutes. Pearse O’Neill and Brian Morrissey scored two mighty efforts. Then on the 25th minute Aghabullogue scored a carbon copy of the 1st goal when they ran at the Aghada defence but this time he kicked to the net. O’Keeffe had the last say with a point on the short whistle. Aghada went in just three points up (0-11 to2-2) when they should have been more daylight between the teams. Within a minute of the restart Vincent was on the scoreboard then Stephen pointed a dead ball. Now Aghabullogue started to press and would rue they missed chances Aghabullogue pulled two back on the 41st and 46th minute. Then came the turning point, when Rohan rattled the net a minute later. A Brian Morrissey point gave Aghada a seven-point lead entering the last ten minutes. Aghabullogue and O’Keeffe exchanged points then with three minutes left Aghabullogue goaled (again like the first two) to follow a point a minute sooner. Now our backs were to the wall. A mighty save from Mickie a clearance from Darren Lee and Ger Melvin’s invention saved the day Young Alan Morrissey just on the field pointed after a pin point pass from brother Vincent and again O’Keeffe had the last say with a pointed free to see Aghada safely into the next round

Mon 14th June Intermediate Premier Hurling league Aghada BT Mallow

Sun 18th July Cork Intermediate Premier Hurling Championship quarter final Aghada 1-9 Blarney 1-9

Lucky to draw unfortunate not to win. That was the story of this game with 7 minutes left on the clock three points behind and Blarney after scoring 4 points within as many minutes looking like winners. Trevor pointed on the 53 minute could we come back. Blarney brake up the field chance, Goal or Point ball comes off the post is this turning point. Ball up and down the field minutes ticking away. Then in a moment of inspiration a great point from Brian Morrissey. Have we time, ball up again, long clearance from the master (Melvin), O’Keeffe grabs, foul free on the 30. Up steps Vincent draw game. Puck out, Rohan Dwane rises high comes down with the ball free in , chance to win the game out comes Vincent long free, wide, what matter we live to fight another day.
It should never have come to this. Vincent Morrissey opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a mighty point following a line ball from his brother Brian. Four minutes latter following another line ball the other Morrissey goaled when Alan connected. Aghada were coasting but were guilty of some bad wides. It took Blarney 15 minutes before they scored. This coming from a free. Within a minute they were level when a long range shot found its way to the net via a flick. Pearse O'Neill now turned on the style scoring two points on the troth before Blarney scored two to leave the game on a knifes edge on the short whistle.
On resumption Blarney started the better scoring two points in as many minutes Trevor O’Keeffe and Alan Morrissey replied before Pearse put Aghada ahead again on the 10th minute. Now Blarney turned on the style to score four points with out reply. Then came our lads. (Had we scored our frees we were home and dry)
The artistry of Melvin, the Steel of Kilbane and the youthful exuberance of Alan Morrissey was what keep Aghada in the game while 1-9 each was a small score both teams have everything to play for the next day.

Sat 21st Aug I P H Championship quarter final replay Aghada 0-12 Blarney 1-12

Wilful waste makes woeful want that’s an old saying that came back to haunt Aghada. Having missed all them scores in the drawn game, Aghada where to pay dear.
Blarney started the better, but Aghada kept pace with points by Pierce O’Neill and Vincent Morrissey. Aghada now came under fierce pressure but with the backline playing well Blarney found scores hard to come by. Yet they still lead by three points halfway through the opening half. Now Aghada started to hurl and when Alan Morrissey pointed two frees within a minute Aghada were on fire. On the 19th minute Ger Melvin pointed a mighty free from eighty yards Vincent, Pierce and Melvin pointed to put Aghada two points clear as the half drew to a close then on the stroke of half time Blarney pointed to leave the half time score 0-8 to 0-7.
On resuming Blarney goaled within two minutes of the restart which left Aghada playing catch up Melvin replied with a point as did Davie Creedon to level the match again. Blarney added two more points before Sub Stephen O’Keeffe just on the field levelled matters with two points inside a minute as we entered the last quarter. Little did we know that these were to be Aghada’s last scores? Now Blarney upped the pace and went ahead on the 49th minute. Blarneys defence went mean, clearing ball after ball. Despite Aghada bringing on Mark Lewis and Declan Devoy Aghada could make no head way. Blarney scored again on the 53rd minute and when they added another with a minute left that was that. Team

Friday the 13th Aug The intermediate hurling league Aghada 1-19 Inniscarra 0-18

Sat 6th Nov I H L semi final Aghada 3-10 Ballinhassig 1-12

Intermediate hurling league semi-final Aghada qualified for this year’s league final when they beat Ballinhassig in perfect conditions in Rostellan on Saturday last. Manager Donie Morrissey and his selectors Martin Hennessy and Alan Devoy stood up and were counted before the throw with a strong decision on team selection. The 15 selected then stood up and were counted after the throw in. Due to a shortage of numbers regular net minder Mickey Lewis found himself back in the position that made him famous – corner forward. What an impact he was to have on the game. He doubled on the ball 4 times in the opening 6 minutes – broke his hurley and fell over the first time, narrowly wide the second, and banged 2 beauties of goals with his third and fourth strikes. Full forward Vinnie Morrissey hit 2 points to speed Aghada into a 2-2 to no score lead. Ballinhassig then got into their stride however and hit 4 points from play with only a Ger Melvin free in response. Excellent wing forward Stephen O’Keeffe then hit 3 in 3 minutes for Aghada, before Ballinhassig again narrowed the gap when they poked home a scrappy goal. In the 7 minutes left to the short whistle the visitors hit 3 more points, again with only Melvin replying for Aghada, this time with a monster shot from play from inside his own half. The Half time score was Aghada 2-7, Ballinhassig 1-7.
Aghada’s other midfielder, Mark Lewis opened the scoring in the second half with a long-range point of his own, but it was all Ballinhassig from here on. Pat Cashman and Paul Kilbane were defending well at full and centre back, while Ken O’Keeffe was clearing a lot of ball on the wing. With 10 minutes to go it was all square – Aghada 2-9, Ballinhassig 1-12. Aghada moved the impressive John Connolly to midfield, and along with young Paudie Wall who was operating as a third midfielder, this was to help get Aghada a grip back on this game. Connolly made a fantastic solo run before off loading to Morrissey for a vital lead point. Then a minute later came the vital score. A long clearance from Darren Lee was superbly caught by Ronan Dwane, who then passed to Mickey in front of the square. Mickey still hadn’t touched the ball with his hand in this game and he wasn’t about to start now. A first time pull saw the ball fly into the roof of the net for “The Poachers” hat trick. 4 Points clear Aghada drove on to victory with 2 more points, one each from Morrissey and Connolly. An excellent game of hurling, an excellent performance and result and hopefully it can be done once more now for the final. Team and Scorers –

Intermediate Hurling League final Aghada 1-4 Courcey Rovers 1-7

Aghada fielding a new look team started the better but were unable to score, then disaster a long ball found its way to Aghada’s net after a mix up in the square. Courceys were to add two more points before Aghada found their shooting boots. Then Trevor and Pearse pointed within a minute mid way into the opening half. Aghada tried hard to add to their score to no avail; it was Courceys who pointed two more to leave the half time score 1-4 to 0-2 for Aghada.
The new management team of Colm O’Brien, Darren Lee, and Anthony Cashman made some changes at the brake, changing Stephen O’Keeffe from corner back to top of the left, Brian Morrissey going to full forward and Trevor O’Keeffe moving to top of the right, still Aghada found scores hard to come bye. Courceys stretched their lead to 1-6 before Aghada got a lucky goal on the 41st minute when a high ball in was fielded by the goalie but pressure from Trevor forced him over the line and a green flag for Aghada. A minute later Courceys replied with a point. Now Aghada upped their game and started to put some moves together. Trevor pointed, and then Rohan Dwane followed to leave just a goal between the sides. Try as they might Aghada were not able to make headway against a strong Courceys defence. A high ball in beat the Courceys goal minder but luck was with him as the ball hit the butt of the post. As time ran out Pearse plucked a ball from the sky and had a great chance. Again the goalie got lucky. Aghada mounted one more attempt a short free from Connelly found Dwane but the ball went wide and that was that. This was a new look side and given time maybe Aghada can do some thing.
