Sun 19th Jan Munster Senior Football League Final Aghada1-10
Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-6
Aghada win first title as a senior club
Tuesday, January 21, 2003 report from THE KINGDOM GAA: O’Rahilly’s
outsmarted
Aghada 1-10, Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-7
WITH Eoin Liston now looking to pastures new, the seasons for the
side he created ended on a negative note when the Kerry champions
Kerins O’Rahilly’s were out-smarted by Aghada of Cork
in the Munster Club Football League Division One final in Ballyvourney
on Sunday. The East Cork side caused a great surprise when they
overcame
A rather lacklustre challenge from the Kerry kingpins and, to be
honest, Aghada looked fitter, more determined and they had all the
ideas when most needed. And even when Rahall’s threatened
to stage a late comeback, the Cork side held firm and stayed in
control to win the John Dowling cup. Aghada goalkeeper Shane O'Connell
was the hero of the day as he pulled off two great late saves to
deny Declan Quill.
But if O'Connell was taking the plaudits, the real star for Aghada
was midfielder Pierce O'Neill who dominated all afternoon against
Michael Quirke and O'Sullivan. Aghada were in almost complete control,
possession wise, in the opening half an could have had at least
four goals in that period were it not for some finishing that was,
to put it mildly, less than clinical.
Declan Sweeney who made a fine save to deny Ken O'Keeffe after 23
minutes and that kept Rahall’s in the game for a period longer
at least.
Brendan Flaherty, Dave Creedon and Trevor O'Keeffe also had great
goal chances as Aghada constantly opened up the Tralee rear-guard
but they finishing touch deserted them. Corner forward O'Connell
scored four points for Aghada's n the first half and the ever-reliable
Ger Molloy was the only player to reply for Strand Road. Aghada,
the club of former Cork great Conor Counihan, came at Rahilly's
in waves as the completely dominated the game and Ger Melvin soon
stretched their lead.
But, despite controlling affairs, Aghada struggled to make any great
impact on the scoreboard but Flaherty and two frees from O'Connell
gave them a four-point cushion, 0-6 to 0-2, at the half-time break.
Rahall’s upped the tempo quite significantly after the restart
with Declan Quill, who was getting to grips with his opponent and
getting a better supply from his teammates, setting up John O'Connor
for point.
But Aghada hit back almost immediately with points from O'Neill
and James O Connor stretching their lead.
Blow
The real killer blow for Rahilly’s came after 40 minutes when
Aghada struck for the all-important goal.
Declan Sweeney pulled off a fine save to deny O'Connell but Aghada
centre-forward Flaherty was at hand to dispossess the keeper and
the ball finished up in the net to give Aghada a 1-8 to 0-4 lead
entering the final quarter. The omens looked bleak for Strand Road
at that stage but, to their credit, they staged a spirited revival
with Declan Quill pointing the way with his second converted free
of the afternoon. Barry O Shea moved to midfield and big Michael
Quirke moved in to the full forward berth and that caused all sorts
of consternation in the Aghada rear-guard.
With Quirke using his physical prowess to good effect, it paved
the way for Rahilly's to find the net after 47 minutes and, almost
immediately after, Quill was on target with a free to cut the gap
to three. Quill could have levelled it as time ticked away but a
great save from the Aghada keeper denied him a certain goal.
Pressure
O Keeffe and Melvin notched points for the East Cork men but these
were very quickly cancelled out by Quill who kicked over two points
as Rahilly’s turned on the pressure. Quill, who was on fire
in that second half, had another last-gasp goal chance but he was
again denied by custodian O'Connell and Aghada s hands were on the
cup that Rahilly’s would dearly loved to have won. Kerins
O’Rahilly’s scorers:
D. Quill, 0-5, (0-3 frees), M. Quirke 1-0, G. Molloy, J. O'Connor
0-1 each. Aghada scorers: J. O'Connell, 0-5 (0-3 frees), B. Flaherty,
1-1, G. Melvin, 0-2, P. O'Neill, T. O'Keeffe, 0-1 each.
Aghada win first title as a senior club and what a way to do it
beating the Kerry county champions to win the Munster club football
league division 1 league final in a sunny Ballyvourney today
Aghada started the more motivated when James O'Connell the best
forward on view, pointed Aghada's first free. John O'Connor replied
with a free for O’Rahilly’s. With Pierce O'Neill and
Brendan Flaherty dominating a t centre field Aghada had the lion’s
share of the ball, but could be faulted for their use of it. With
Rohan Dwane catching ball at will he posed a major threat at full
forward. O'Connell scored a great point form play to give Aghada
the lead again a lead they never lost. Aghada were now at their
brilliant best with Willy O'Donoghue controlling play from centre
back. The Aghada full forward line ran the Tralee boys ragged, but
the scores would not come. O'Rahilly’s goalie Declan Sweeney
made some great saves three in fact before Ger Melvin pointed. A
point followed from Flaherty when he got a gift of a pass for Paul
Heaslep who misses hit an O’Rahilly’s line ball. O’Rahilly’s
tried both Michael Quirke and Barry O'Shea at full back but to no
avail. With the short whistle approaching Aghada won a free on the
fifty, O Rahilly’s descent not once but twice and this left
O'Connell with the easiest of frees. In a rare attack Kerry senior
Declan Quill pointed for the Kerry Champions. O'Connell replied
with a free again made easy by O’Rahilly’s mouthing,
to leave the score at half time 0-6 to 0-2 a scoreline that flattered
the Kerry men.
After the brake the Tralee men attacked with Quill pointing a free.
Aghada's response was swift and fierce. A point from O'Connell followed
by a long-range point from O'Neill. O'Connell's shot on goal was
saved but Brendan Flaherty followed up and tapped the ball from
Sweeney’s hands for a goal. The Kerry men now moved Michael
Quirke to the middle of the park and Barry O'Shea back to Centre
back and they slowly came into the game. Quill pointed a free, John
O'Connor now posed a big threat to Aghada started to get inside
Darren Lee, and only a great save form Shane O'Connell denied him
a goal. But the goal was to come when Quirke got the major for the
Tralee men. Aghada brought on Michael Lewis for Lee with Colm O'Brien
going on O'Connor. Now it was one way traffic for the Kerry men
they came in waves with Quirke causing all sorts of problems for
Paul Kilbane now at full back, Richie Holohan came on for O’Rahilly’s
and gave the Aghada backline a torrid time. Quill added another
minor after a double save by O’Connell. Fair play to Aghada
back they came with Dwane added new life to centre field. Two points
from Trevor O'Keeffe and Ger Melvin put Aghada back in the driving
seat. But back came the men from the Kingdom two points from Quill
and O'Connor left just a goal between the sides. And as many minutes
left. Then Sub Richie Holohan broke away on the right wing and again
man of the match Shane O'Connell was there to save the day. The
field was a credit to the Ballyvourney Club

Aghada 4-10 John Mitchells 0-5
Munster Senior League Aghada got their defence of their Munster
league title underway last Saturday with a comprehensive victory
over Kerry outfit John Mitchell’s. Aghada dominated this game
from start to finish. Trevor O'Keeffe was the scorer in chief and
in the first half he notched up a personal tally of 2-2. Points
from Dave Creedon & Pierce O'Neill, as well as a fisted goal
from full forward Ronan Dwane gave Aghada a very comfortable advantage
at half time of 3 - 4 to 0 - 1. John Mitchell’s improved in
the second half & scored 4 points. This was more than matched
however by Aghada who scored 1 - 6 in the second period. The goal
came from a sublime lob from midfielder Tom O'Neill. In the end
it was all too easy for Aghada who ran out winners on a 4 - 10 to
0 - 5 pts scoreline.

rallied to score some excellent points from James O'Connell, Pearse
O'Neill and the flying Ken O'Keeffe from wing back. Once Trevor
O' Keeffe goaled mid way through the first half, Aghada were in
a lead they were never to relinquish. Excellent defending from John
Wall, Ken O’Keeffe, and Eoin O'Neill kept the Ballincollig
forwards at bay. Pierce O'Neill and Ronan Dwane were on top at midfield,

13th April Senior Football Championship Aghada 1-7 Mallow 1-2
Deserved win for Aghada in a wet and windy Rathcormac Aghada lead
from the word go when James O’Connell pointed a great free.
A minute later Melvin scored the first of his three points. Aghada
had more of the play in this quarter and when Melvin pointed a free
on the 15th minute it was no more then Aghada deserved. Yet with
in two minutes Mallow were level when they scored a major after
a goal mouth melee following a Mallow 45. This was the closest Mallow
came With Aidan Kelleher playing his first championship game for
Aghada our midfield was rock solid .Following a great passing movement
that started from the half backline Davie Creedon was on hand to
blast it to the net restoring Aghada’s lead just before the
short whistle.
Within 3 seconds of the restart Mallow pointed but back came the
seasiders with points from O’Connell (free) and Melvin. Mallow
replied with a point on the 39th Minute, but this was to be their
last score. Brendan Crowley, Rohan Dwane (playing at full back),
and Kieran O’Connor were by now in complete control and out
side them Paul Kilbane came into his own. With Pierce O’Neill
now outstanding at mid field the writing was on the wall for Mallow.
When Half Back Kenneth O’Keeffe pointed on the 16th Minute
Aghada looked safe but the never put Mallow away until the bold
Davie Creedon had the last say with a point in the 61st minute .
Maybe this is the win Aghada need to get things up and running for

Nerve wrecking finish as super Sub O’Brien scores winning
point
On the Field for only five Minutes Colm O’Brien calmly finished
a great move when he gave Aghada the lead a minute into injury time.
But it should never have come to this. Pierce O’Neill and
Aidan Kelleher owned the centre of the park during the opening quarter.
Indeed O’Neill won the ball from the throw in, sent it into
the Saints goalmouth and when Brendan O’Flaherty won a great
ball he put Aghada ahead after 20 seconds. Straight after Flaherty
scoring he was brought back behind the halfback line as a sweeper.
Indeed it worked but it left the saints with an over lap for the
kick outs. One-minute later cornerback Brendan Crowley pointed Aghada
were well on top. With the afore mentioned midfielders lording it
Aghada had a mighty supply of ball up front. Trevor O’Keeffe
was winning ball at will as was all the Aghada forwards yet we could
not pull away. On the ninth minute O’Croinín pointed
a placed ball for Naomh Abáns opening score James O’Connell
replied for Aghada. Eoin O’Neill then added another on the
18th minute. The game then began to turn with O’Croinín
pointing two frees within as many minutes. Then came disaster a
penalty for the Saints again O’Croinín converted to
leave Aghada trailing at half time by 1-3 to 0-4 Aghada rejiged
the team during the interval Brian Morrissey replaced Trevor O’Keeffe,
Kieran O’Connor moved to centre back with Capt Willie O’Donoghue
going to corner back.
Aghada started the second half as they did the 1st. Kelleher pointing
in the 31st minute but back came Naomh Abán with their 1st
point from play. O’Connell and Kelleher pointed to level the
game. Back came O’Croinín with two placed balls to
lead again. Scores were now hard to come by as both sets of backs
were on top. Aghada were coming forward especially O’Connor
but again Aghada were holding up the ball and going up blind alleys.
Then Eoin O’Neill pointed an impossible point from the sideline
one sensed that Aghada had what it took to win the game O’Connell
pointed on the 54th minute to level matters again. Two minutes later
O’Neill was again on the ball and gave Aghada the lead. O’Croinín
pointed for the Saints with time running out. Back came Aghada for
O’Brien’s point to win a famous victory. Thomas O’Neill
came on as a blood sub and gave a good account of himself for his
first senior start as did Brian Morrissey Stephen O’Keeffe
also made his senior start but was not on the field long enough

Rossa 1-7
This match was nearly lost and if Skibb had taken their chance it
was over.
Yet we live to fight another day and we deserved one. Yes we were
the better team through out. Indeed after the first three minutes
Aghada had three wides, one an open goal that spun off the boot
of Flaherty in a sequel of last week when he got the opening score
against Naomh Abán. Yet Rossa’s were the first to score
after these misses. Aghada’s first score fell to Trevor O’Keeffe
who showed he could win some great ball. Skibb replied after 9 minutes,
Melvin added a free on the 13th minute to give Aghada the lead for
the 1st time. Davie Creedon added another 5 minutes later only for
Rossa’s to cancel it out with in a minute. .Eoin O’Neill
pointed for Aghada before Skibb got the last score of the half .
To leave both sides level. Flaherty was again to revert to a sweeper
behind the half backline. Again it worked ok but the Skibb Full
Back got the goal that mattered in the end.
The second half was a carbon copy of the first but this time Skibb
missing the early scores, than again on the third minute of the
second half O’Neill found the net. But how Skibb responded
two points within as many minutes brought them back into the game.
This was the only time that they scored back to back scores. O’Connell
added a free on the 37th minute before Skibb replied 46th minute.
Aghada had by now all the aces with Pierce O’Neill and Aidan
Kelleher well on top in the middle of the park. Sub Brian Morrissey
added a point before O’Neill pointed to put Aghada a goal
ahead with time running out. Then when Aghada should have dealt
with a handy ball came the Skibb goal. And how lucky we were to
hold on. Yet we had the last chance to win the game again the ball
fell into the hands of the goalie from O’Connell’s shot
when Young Stephen O’Keeffe set him up. Let’s hope Aghada
will not regret all the wides the next day.
Maybe now we will be taken seriously

Sat 2nd Aug Senior football replay Aghada 2-8 O’Donovan Rossa
2-9
In a game that started slow enough it burst into life 30 seconds
into the second half when Trevor O’Keeffe goaled after Flaherty
went up into the clouds to win a ball, within the minute Pierce
O’Neill pointed. Two minutes later Davie Creedon added a point
to leave Aghada six points clear, out of sight as we thought. Aghada
scored more in this three-minute spell than they did for the whole
of the first half where scores were hard to come bye.
Rossa’s opened the scoring with a point in the 1st minute
Trevor replied with a great point straight away. Skibb pointed again
on the 6th minute before Ger Melvin pulled the sides levels again
from a placed ball. Then came two mighty points from Trevor as we
entered the second quarter. This lead was short lived as Skibb piled
on the pressure. They were running through the Aghada defence then
within a minute conjured up two points to level the game again.
In truth Skibb missed some mighty chances, Bad shooting and great
defending from the Aghada defence especially Shane O’Connell
in goal and Rohan Dwane denied them. As time ran out Kieran O’Connor
made a run up the field and pointed to leave Aghada leading at the
brake 0-5 to 0-4
After the brake and the afore mentioned Aghada scoring spell Skibb
started to again to gain control and slowly reduced the lead. Points
on the 36th and 38th minute mark started the revival. By now Aghada
were feeling the pressure and were hit by the first of two goals
on the 43rd minute. Aghada replied immediately when Owen O’Neill
pointed. This proved to be only a temporary reprieve as Skibb scored
1-3 with out reply to lead by four points with the game dying. Then
came more drama a free in for Aghada taken short a melee in the
square. The ref consult his umpires, walk's out spreads his hands,
penalty. Now Skibb play the old soldier delay time, up steps Flaherty
goal back to a one point game with time gone from the kick out Kelleher
goes high and grabs the ball sets up O’Connor for a run but
is adjudged to have fouled the ball. And as they say that was that
.I suppose the most telling statistic of any match is the wides
