Wed 7th May Intermediate Hurling Championship

Aghada 2-13 Youghal 2-10

Aghada looked the better side right through but could not put Youghal away Youghal playing with a gale force wind got a dream start when Michael Ó Laocha found the net after a mix up in the full backline from the throw in. But how our lads responded points from Vincent Morrissey (Three in all, two from dead balls) Dave Creedon and Trevor O’Keeffe before Youghal scored again. The Half forward line of Davie, Pearse and Trevor had the Youghal boys in all sorts of bother when they ran at them Pearse added a point before he found Davie at the edge of the square with a peach of a pass and Davie made no mistake .a minute later Pearse added an other minor and it looked like Aghada would run riot. Then came another mix up and again Michael Ó Laocha was on hand to find the net. This gave Youghal a lifeline and they took it adding five points before Trevor and Vincent levelled matters on the stroke of half time

Now it was Aghada’s turn the second half just opened when Vincent found the net Pearse added a point and then Brian Morrissey came into the game scoring a brace of points within as many minutes the last coming on the 43rd minute. Youghal were yet to score, but back they came hitting four points in a row before Trevor steadied the nerves with a point to finish off the game. Five of the Aghada forwards scored while Stephen O’Keeffe acquitted him well on his championship debut, as did Aidan Cotter who worked hard in the centre of the park. Rohan Dwane faired well at centre back as did Billy Hennessy and his uncle the evergreen Captain Kenneth O’Keeffe

Michael Lewis, Brendan Crowley , Pat Cashman , Colm O'Brien, Billy Hennessy, Rohan Dwane , Kenneth O'Keeffe (capt), Aidan Cotter , Ger Melvin, Trevor O'Keeffe ,(0-3), Davie Creedon (1-1), Pearse O’Neill (0-3), Stephen O'Keeffe, Brian Morrissey (0-2), Vincent Morrissey (1-4) Sub used Declan Devoy for Cotter 54th minute

Sat 17th May IHL Aghada 0-14 Courcey Rovers 3-10
Short a number players and playing into a strong wind, Aghada didn't have the best of opening half’s. Going for difficult goal chances up front for no return, and conceding lots of goal chances at the back, meant that only the sheer brilliance of goalkeeper Michael Lewis kept Aghada in this game at half time. All things considered the 1-6 to 0-3 interval scoreline didn't seem insurmountable turning to play with the wind in the 2nd period. The expected comeback never materialised and with Courcey’s eventually getting the goals they had threatened all night, they ran out easy winners on a 3-10 to 0-11 scoreline.

Sun 9th Oct Liam Breathnach cup intermediate Hurling

Aghada 4-8 Kilbrittain 0-18

Aghada’s intermediate hurlers travelled to Ballinhassig on Sunday morning last to play Kilbrittain in the quarter final of the Liam Breathnach cup. Aghada travelled light – they brought 15 players, 1 sub/selector, the manager and to the best of my knowledge only one supporter – John Motherway! Despite the heavy conditions a great hours hurling was served up by both teams. Aghada had the lead at half time; thanks mainly to two great goals from corner forward David O’ Keeffe. The first goal came after full forward Pierce O’Neill burned the Kilbrittain full back before hand passing to O’Keeffe who doubled first time on the ball in flight and billowed the net. A super score! The second was set up courtesy of the other corner man Kieran O’Connor who raced through on goal before squaring the ball for O’Keeffe to slide in bravely and crash the ball home to the back of the net. Kilbrittain were staying in touch however with some excellent points as well as a number of frees needlessly given away by the Aghada defence. The interval scoreline read Aghada 2-5 V Kilbrittain 0-8. On the restart a brilliant last-ditch hook by wingback Ken O’Keeffe denied Kilbrittain a certain goal. At the other end Aghada were to score two more goals in this half. First O’Keeffe scrambled home his hat trick and then Brian Morrissey pounced for a real opportunist goal. Despite these goals Aghada were always under pressure from Kilbrittain who were still picking off some good points. Aghada had a new ‘keeper in the shape of Trevor O’ Keeffe who had a great game between the posts, and his “varied” puck outs certainly kept the opposition guessing (as well as his own team mates!). Cathal O’Gorman, Anthony Connolly, and Stevie Keeffe were defending very well at this stage. With time running out Aghada had a 2 point lead. Kilbrittain staged one more attack and seemed certain to score the winning goal, when corner back Billy Hennessey appeared from nowhere to superbly flick the ball away from the Kilbrittain forward. Aghada held on for what I think is our first ever victory over this West Cork side. Aghada now meet Ballinhassig in the semi-final, and this game will most likely be played the weekend after next.
Team: T. O’Keeffe, A. Connolly, C. O’Gorman, B. Hennessy, S. O’Keeffe, G. Melvin, K. O’Keeffe (capt), J. Murphy, A. Cotter, B. Morrissey, V. Morrissey, J. Connolly, K. O’Connor, P. O’Neill, D. O’Keeffe.

Sun 16th Nov Liam Breathnach cup Intermediate Hurling

Aghada 2-10 Ballinhassig 1-18

Aghada’s intermediate hurlers returned to Ballinhassig for the second week in a row, this time to take on the home side in the semi-final of the Liam Breathnach cup. This time we brought extra’s of everything – selectors, players and supporters and all were needed as this game took 20 mins of extra time to separate two very committed teams. Ballinhassig started the brighter of the 2 but and early Brian Morrissey goal helped settle a young Aghada side. Johno, Billy Boots, and Ger Melvin were particularly impressive for Aghada in defence while up front Pierce O’Neill and John Connolly looked the most dangerous. Aghada led by the narrowest of margins at half time and despite being reduced to 14 men mid-way through the second period, still had a one-point lead with time up on the clock. With the last puck of the game, Ballinhassig equalised to send the match into extra time. A fine individual goal from Kieran O’Connor followed by a point by Pierce O’Neill gave Aghada a great start. Soon after however Aghada paid a very dear price for over carrying in the forwards when the resulting free was sent the length of the pitch and all the way to the back of the Aghada net. It was the lift the home side needed and in the 2nd 10 mins of extra time they 4 unanswered points to clinch victory and a place in the final. It was not to be for an Aghada side which gave their all on the day.
Team & Scores: T. O’Keeffe, T. O’Neill, J. O’Connor, B .Hennessy, S. O’Keeffe, G. Melvin(0-3), K. O’Keeffe(capt.), J. Murphy(0-2), B .Crowley, J. Connolly(0-2), P .O’Neill(0-2), T. Wall, K. O’Connor(1-0), B. Morrissey(1-1), D. O’Keeffe. Sub Used –Micheál Lewis
