The Willy Ryan comes of age
The story starts back in 1981 when that great Gael and Aghada mentor William Ryan died. His sister Mrs Hennessy put up a trophy in his honour. The Aghada Club then ran an u12-hurling tournament that still runs to this day 21 years later.
Erin's Own became the 1st holder. The following year the host club won it for the 1st of five times when Willie's Grand nephew Mark Crowley lifted the trophy a proud day in the Hennessy household. Marks brothers Timmy and Willie also lifted the trophy in their time while his youngest brother Pa played in this years final 20 years on Billy Hennessy Marks cousin also Captained a winning Aghada team . Many of the present day Cork players have Willy Ryan medals Killeagh's Brendan Walsh, Joe Deane, Mark Landers and Bernard Rochford as have Donal Óg and Diarmuid O' Sullivan with Cloyne. While Nial McCarthy and Séanie Farrell won one with Carrigtwohill in 1992. Pat Ryan got a medal with Sars in 86 when he played in goal as did Brian Corcoran when again he played in goal in 81. Killeagh won the 1st of their four titles in 84,. Cloyne come next on the list with 3 titles the 1st one in 85 and they deprived Killeagh of four in a row by winning the 90 final after Killeagh won in 88, 89 and again in 91. Erin's Own deprived Aghada of five in a row when they won the 94 final while Aghada won 93, 95, 96, and 97 title. Youghal, Bride Rovers and Carrignavar have one each as have Cobh who won this years competition when we another big day in Rostellan with three East Cork Champions Erin's Own who were also County Champions, Castlemartyr and Youghal taking part a great days hurling was assured .
A great Cobh team after beating the county champions Erin's Own they were all ways going to be hard to beat. Aghada bt Killeagh by a single point and Castlemartyr well also a good Midleton team in the semi final on the scoreline of 4-4 to 1 -2. In-group 1 Aghada finished with 4 points Killeagh with 2 and Castlemartyr 0. This meant Aghada Were in the Semi Final and Killeagh were in the Quarter Final .In group 2 we had a tie with Cobh, Erin's Own and Carrignavar all level on 2 points each so we had to go to goal difference
This meant Cobh Were in the Semi Final and the defending champions Carrignavar were in the Quarter Final.
In the final group Midleton came 1st with Youghal runners up. In the quarter finals Midleton bt Carrignavar and Killeagh bt Youghal.
Aghada bt Midleton and Cobh bt Killeagh in the semi's . In the final Cobh turned on the style and bt a tried Aghada team .
This tournament could never be run without the goodwill of the clubs who have made this one of the most coveted titles around if you win the Willy Ryan you can claim to be the best team in East Cork . A lot of work goes into running this from the food and there was plenty of that , thanks to the ladies , to getting the fields ready, the hall in Aghada as well as the school field and hall thanks to Thomás O'Gormain for the use of same . To Brosnan's Cloyne for looking after the loud speakers . To Denis O'Brien cutting the grass and lots more. thanks also to the refs. Bill Cody, Cyrill Reaney, Dave O'Keeffe, Peter Murphy, Brian Walsh and Pat O'Connell.
All of this effort shows who high the name of Laim Ui Riain is held in twenty one years after his death.
