Sat 16th Mar Intermediate League St. Vincent’s 3-9 Aghada 2-10

Sat 24th Intermediate Hurling League Bride Rovers 2-13 Aghada 1-12

Bride Rovers avenged last season's championship loss with a four point win over our lads in Rostellan last Sat. Two cracking first half goals from the Rovers gave them a cushion which they held to the end. Aghada lost the services of the center back Pat Cashman early on and had to reshuffle the pack with John Murphy coming on at right half forward and John Paul O'Connor going back to fill Cashman's place. Once the team settled they began to match the Rovers in a tough uncompromising encounter but we were still behind by 2-6 to 0-6 at half time. On the restart our lads improved , a superb goal from Richie Lewis and points from the Morrissey brothers Vincent and Brian a couple from Richie and a excellent save from net minder Mickey Lewis , gave Aghada hope with Colm O'Brien and John Paul hurling confidently Aghada tried hard but to no avail and the Rovers ran out deserving winners team;

5/5/02 Mallow 3-11 Aghada 0-13

Examiner report 6-5-02
After suffering the pangs of a county final defeat, it takes a special team to bounce back the following year and undo the disappointment. Mallow beating by Killeagh after a replay last year started their Champaign at Watergrasshill in commendable fashion, proving that they fully intend exorcising the ghosts of last years defeat. Sprightly and hungry in all areas, Mallows display of power hurling coupled with a ruthless streak in attack when needed, could not be countered by an Aghada side who never could recover from a blistering five minute spell early in the first half , and the concession of a fortuitous goal early in the second moiety. Between the 7th and 12th minutes Mallow conjured up a magical 2-4 that deleted Aghada's intentions to cause a major upset in the first round. And after getting to with in two points early in the second half their good work became unstuck, when Rohan Sheehan's long ball deceived Lewis in the goal as the ball sailed over his head into the net. That was Aghada's second major setback of the night and could never fully recover from that blow. There wasn't a feverish intensity to proceedings, but Mallow showed all the hallmarks of future champions. First Patrick Dineen opened his night's work with a free, before the ever dangerous McCormack- after a Hugh catch twenty meters from goal -hand passed to Brian Carey and the full forward's sweet strike found the top right hand corner of the net. Further points from Austin Aherne and a very effective Ronan Galvin pushed Mallow 1-3 to 0-2 ahead, before Aghada suffered another blow when the talismanic Dineen blasted home a goal from a 20 meter free that ended Mallow's purple patch with a graceful point. A shaken Aghada responded with two points from Richie Lewis and Declan Devoy, but then some profligate on their part entering the last ten minute's of the first half could have narrowed the gap . Instead the half ended with Mallow ahead 2-5 to 0-6. Aghada weren't going to throw in the towel that easily, and in a three minute spell after the brake, Lewis (2) and Morrissey brought the margin down to two points. But misfortune struck again for the 2000 finalists when Sheehan's shot went all the way to the net. It was a huge setback for the Imokilly side. With Mark Buckley continuing to be very prominent in midfield and McCormack dropping back to assist his defence in the last quarter, Mallow finished with aplomb with points from Brian Carey, Rohan Galvin, and Michael Maher.
team Michael Lewis, Brendan Crowley, Darren Lee, Colm O'Brien, JP O'Connor, Pat Cashman, Billy Hennessy, Dave Creedon , Ger Melvin (0-3), Pearse O'Neill, Rohan Dwane ,John Murphy, Brian Morrissey (0-4), Declan Devoy (0-1), Richie Lewis (0-5 frees) subs used Trevor O'Keeffe, Vincent Morrissey ,and Mark Lewis

Fri 24th May Intermediate Hurling Championship

Aghada 0-16 Nemo Rangers 1-8

Aghada advanced to the next round with a fine performance on a bitter cold night in Carrigtwohill. The story of this match is the Morrissey brothers Vincent scoring 5 points and Brian scoring 4 all from play. Indeed the other two minors Brendan Crowley and Billy Hennessy were outstanding in defence and while up front evergreen John Murphy played his best game for years. Playing against the wind in the first half scores was hard to come bye until the younger Morrissey scored 2 points with in a minute. Aghada found it hard going with Martin Cronin (the best player on view) pushing Nemo forward every time and with James Masters popping over the points Aghada were hard pressed. then on the 25th minute William Morgan goaled to leave Nemo ahead at the brake on the scoreline of 1-5 to 0-4.
On the resumption Ger Melvin turned on the style at centre field and the older Morrissey done like wise up front and if Brian could score 2 in a minute so could Vincent. it took Aghada all the third quarter to brake down Nemo but when we did we hit six points to no reply and we won pulling up. for long parts of this match we struggled but we played some outstanding hurling especially Murphy and Melvin.
Team Michael Lewis, Brendan Crowley, Darren Lee, Billy Hennessy, JP O'Connor, Pat Cashman, Colm O'Brien, Dave Creedon, and Ger Melvin (0-2), Declan Devoy, Rohan Dwane, John Murphy, Brian Morrissey (0-4), Vincent Morrissey (0-5), Richie Lewis (0-4) subs used Trevor O'Keeffe, for Richie Lewis, Mark Lewis (0-1) for Dave Creedon

Mon 24th June I.H.L. Aghada 2-10 Cobh 1-8 to win their second league game

Aghada's Intermediate Hurlers recorded a hard earned five point league win over Cobh in a fiercely competitive encounter in Cobh last Monday evening. Corner forward Brian Morrissey was the Aghada hero scoring 2-2 with a goal in each half both of his goals superbly executed, the second a real poachers effort, showing great bravery and maturity. This was a super battling performance by the team as they collectively dug deep to come away with the points. The Aghada half back line of Billy Hennessy, John Paul O Connor, and Kenneth O Keeffe were in tremendous form with O Connor giving a master class display. Dave Creedon and Ronan Dwane hurled confidently, Colm O Brien and Brendan rock solid as Brian Morrissey was the scorer in chief in a top class courageous team performance.
Team Michael Lewis, Brendan Crowley, Paul O’Donoghue, Colm O'Brien, Kenneth O’Keeffe, JP O’Connor, Billy Hennessy, Dave Creedon, Ger Melvin, Declan Devoy, Rohan Dawne, John Murphy, Brian Morrissey 2-3 Vincent Morrissey (0-3), Richie Lewis (0-3) Sub P O'Neill (0-1)

Mon 1st July Intermediate Hurling Challenge Aghada 1-12 Inniscarra 2-16

7/7/02 Aghada 1-15 Ballymartle 3-2

A good warm up game for Aghada hurlers in preparation for their upcoming championship clash with Bishopstown. Ronan Dwane at full forward got the goal and tacked on a few points also to cap an excellent individual performance. Others to shine for Aghada were Brendan Crowley, Pat Cashman, Kenneth O'Keeffe (who was playing his second game of the day), and Trevor O'Keeffe who was in scintillating form at half forward.
Aghada Team: Michael Lewis, B Crowley , J-P O'Connor , C O'Brien, B. Hennessy , P. Cashman , K. O'Keeffe, Mark Lewis , G. Melvin, D. Devoy , D. Creedon , T. O'Keeffe, B. Morrissey , R. Dwane , R. Lewis. Subs Used: P. O'Neill, V. Morrissey.

13th July I.H.C. Aghada 3-19 Bishopstown 0-8

Melvin masterful at midfield
It took Bishopstown 15 minutes to score and in that time Aghada had scored 1-5 including a mighty point from halfback Billy Hennessy. It would be another twenty five minutes before the Town would score again by now Aghada were on the way home on the score line 3-12 to 0-2. After this they made a bit of a rally scoring six points in the last quarter to Aghada's seven but this still left Aghada comfortable winners. Aghada seem to find a man with ease when the need arose. With the two Morrissey brothers leading the attack things looked easy. When John Murphy went for goal form the forty and got it the game was up. JP O'Connor looked the part at full back even when the Town put their best player Brian Cuthbert on him Still Melvin stopped a sure goal from Cuthbert at the death . Kenneth O'Keeffe playing his first Intermediate Championship match this year impressed as did young Bill Hennessy. Richie Lewis as always had the last say when he scored the last point after coming on as a sub.
Aghada now meet the winners of Kilbrittain v Courcey Rovers in Quarter finals

Sun 18th Aug Intermediate Hurling match Aghada 2-17 Newcestown 3-9

Fri 23 Aug Intermediate Hurling Championship Aghada 3-4 Courcey Rovers 3-16

Yes the score tells it all Out hurled, Our ran, Out played.
With only Mickey Lewis and Vincent Morrissey coming out with any credit. Courceys got off to a great start and should have had a number of goals getting two points when goals were there for the taking. Still they had not long to wait for after eight minutes Courceys were 1-2 up and Aghada were not at the races , .up steps Vincent Morrissey with one of the finest goals I have seen followed by again another fine score this time a point. Now we felt we would up the anti but alas could add only two more points in this half one from a Morrissey free and the other coming from Dave Creedon from play. Mean while Courceys added 1-5 to leave them comfortable leaders at half time by the score of 2-7 to 1-3... Courceys were 1st away again in the second half when they the scored the 1st point, Morrissey followed with a pointed free but again Courceys tapped one over before a long ball from a Morrissey free found Creedon who connecting in the air Goal. now we will put it up to them. No way this was the nearest we got to Courceys as they hit over five points with out reply. Courceys were now rampant all over the field Alan Morrissey unable to shake off his marker all night found the net only for the Ref Willy Horgan (who had a bad game) to award a semi penalty which sub Richie Lewis slotted home, Again Courceys responded with a goal at the other end it was now all over bar the shouting I think we could have had seen the new County Champions in action
Team Michael Lewis, Darren Lee, JP O'Connor , Colm O'Brien, Billy Hennessy , Pat Cashman ,Kenneth O'Keeffe, Mark Lewis , Ger Melvin, Declan Devoy , Dave Creedon(1-1), John Murphy, Brian Morrissey , Rohan Dawne , Vincent Morrissey (1-3) 0-2 frees Subs used Trevor O'Keeffe for Declan Devoy (15m), Pearse O'Neill For John Murphy(half time), Declan Devoy for Mark Lewis (45m) and Richie Lewis(1-0) for Pearse O'Neill (50m)
